I never heard the term 'alternative hip hop', i always thought hip hop was alternative by default. All those groups named were just like, just hip hop. Hip Hop just had a lot more scope in those days.

I agree with you and in general hate any sort of classification in terms of music. But, alt hip hop was indeed a thing, at least here in the US, it was.

Hells yeah. They've actually reunited. Babes are one of the heaviest bands I've ever heard.

Yeah, I read about the reunion show. I saw them a bunch of times live and they never disappointed. Kat Bjelland's voice was incredible live.

She also had a band, Crunt, that were very good as well.

Lots of great bands in the alternative hip hop scene...Arrested Development, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5, Brand Nubian, De La Soul...

Don't know how big they were outside of D.C. (where they and I were from)
