Some of you probably know, that in the very early days a danish guy, Ole Beich, was the bassist for Guns. He quit the band pretty early, before they got big, and he died in 1991.

Ok, this was printed in a danish paper a couple of days ago. I just put the whole article in Google Translate, so I apologize for all the spelling mistakes in it. Still, I think you will get the idea of it... And it´s very interresting reading for a fan!! I didn´t know much about the guy before, and i had never seen any pics of him before, but it´s all in this article. It´s probably more interesting to me, because i´m a dane myself, but what the...

Here´s the danish article with pictures: http://politiken.dk/...ticle573660.ece

Here´s the (bad) translation:

Ole sitting on a bench at Sct. Jørgens Lake in Copenhagen together with a friend and debating whether we can swim across to the other lake shore.

We can easily believe Ole, who has drunk nine Elefantøl and three Blue Melton.

He has always been the type who wants to prove that it is possible to do both this and that. He afklæder all his clothes except his blue pants and go into the water.

It is cold, about nine degrees, and more than ten o'clock in the evening. October Darkness has died down over Copenhagen.

From the width can oles comrade and a passer-conditioning running to see Ole disappear in the darkness.

Shortly after, they can not see him, only to hear him and to shout for them.

Believe in breakthrough
This is the story of Ole Beich, a young musician from Brisbane, which in the early 1980s to take the U.S. to pursue his dream of becoming a rock star in 1985 and is a founder rockbandet Guns N 'Roses.

A story about the largely unknown Danish member of one of history of the world's largest rockbands. A story about the joy of playing music and discomfort by turning his balls down in a couple of black spandexbukser.

And a story about faith and hope for a breakthrough, while losing faith in itself.

The story starts in the last half of the 1960s in a small red detached on the outskirts of Brisbane.

Here is the family Beich by making themselves ready for another ordinary day.

As usual Ole be in 12 years and Anders to 7 years in school. As usual, the two brothers sit side by side, each with its own plate.

Pollinate each day
And as usual, takes Ole package of Kellogg's Cornflakes and leaning into his plate. But this morning there will be not only Cornflakes out of the package: a small slip sliding out also with the yellow corn flakes and landing at the plate.

'Congratulations, you've won a guitar', reads the note.

Ole popped up. Rejoicing. He has played little in his father's jazz guitar and long dreamed of getting her own.

The dream is later delivered directly to your door in a cardboard box from Kellogg's.

Ole pollinator day in and day out. Sometimes, alone in his room.

Other times, together with two companions in the small washroom, where they can barely squeeze one of drums and two guitar amplifiers into the kitchen door, washing machine and some lockers. He pollinate themselves and exert themselves and exert themselves.

And often forget everything about reading homework.

When parents ask for the school, pulling his son on the shoulder and hurries into the room to find his guitar.

Ole can do much better, writes the worried teachers from the school in their opinions. You are right, but Ole do not want to do better. He actually did not bother to go to school, he later drop out of an education under the technical accounts and never get an education.

"He would just play music," said oles mother, Birgit Beich, today.

"But while he would indeed like to prove that he could be somebody. He said it never directly ... So I can not remember that he has said, "Now I sgu to the United States, and I will show that I can, but there is no doubt that this was why he wanted to go. He had much to prove that he could '.

Ole has a vision
The teenage years are Ole Beich known in Brisbane.

For his long pale hair, to score all the pretty girls and then of course for his musical talent.

In the early voksenår he moves to Copenhagen and plays, among other things, in Mercyful Fate, which later get record deal in England and will be a great inspiration for Metallica, but quit the band for the USA.

He tells his parents that he would travel to America to play music and earn enough money to buy a house for the family. He will buy two Harley-Davidson motorcycles, one for himself and one for the father, who have motorcycles and love to cruise. And he will return to Brisbane to see his Ford Lincoln be hoisted down to the harbor and then run around the city.

In October 1983 he takes off.

Siler rain down on the Calabar Port, as Ole Beich together with his friend Henry Aarøe yesterday on board the DFDS ferry from England, where they will fly to Los Angeles.

Ole has sunglasses on. In fact, it is ordinary glasses with strength, but he got opticians in Brisbane to tone them, so they is confusingly similar to sunglasses.

It is more cool, he seems.

On the quay are his parents, Henrik parents and some friends.

The mother waving as the two young men will appear on deck, but Ole waving not. It is difficult to beckon in the tykhudede motorcycle jacket with rivets and double zipper, and also waving rock stars do not. Not at all to their mothers.

Audition
Since getting out of the plane in Los Angeles and passes through the arrivals hall, Ole has only one thing in his head: He will find some musicians to play with. And it can not go fast enough.

While Henrik hire a car, is the aspiring musician in the stand and buy a stack of newspapers. Scrolls quickly on the ads, where bands are seeking new members.

There are many: bands, which seeks guitarists, bands, which seeks drummer, bands, which seeks bassister, bands, which seeks singers.

Ole, which is already in the meantime with Mercyful Fate switched off the guitar with a bass - allegedly because of the fierce competition among guitarists - look in the category for bass and heavyrock.

He calls right away, and the very next day, he has the first agreement to come to audition in Los Angeles.

It is no coincidence that Ole Henrik and select Los Angeles. It is the place to be for musicians. The city of dreams. It was here, The Doors broke through.

It was here, Neil Young played his first solo concert.

It was here that Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention recorded their most lauded albums. And it was here, Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin and The Byrds hung out.

Yes, even Elvis Presley visited regularly when he lived.

In musikmagasinet Rolling Stone has Ole read about hovedpulsåren The Sunset Strip, on gambling sites The Troubadour, Roxy and the Rainbow Bar and dreamed away from bars in Christchurch. Into the heat of rock stars and models.

"Could you imagine going to bed with Brooke Shields?", He asked his friend Henry before they went.

Meetings of the unknown Rose
Henry could well imagine going to bed with the 18-year-old supermodel and actress, as he had seen in a magazine. It would be quite fat.

Ole Henrik meetings and never Brooke Shields, but they quickly meet some other well-known:

At the Rainbow Bar encounter random into the band members from Motley Crue, which they later become friends with, through newspaper ads come to Ole audition with Bill Ward, drummer of heavy rockbandet Black Sabbath, and a day of meetings the one guy who called Axl.

By the time Axl Rose is not yet known.

He's like Ole Beich and a lot of other young and aspiring musicians traveled to Los Angeles to try their luck.

The two hang out at the same bars, trying their luck for the same Auditions, and after an audition takes Axl and a few other musicians with Ole Henrik and go to an old warehouse on Sunset Boulevard, where the two Danes live in a period. Pakhuset has previously been stocked for a shopping mall, but has turned into a recording studio and a couple of rooms.

They smoke pot, drink booze and talk about music.

It makes the way, every day, but this day remember Henrik anyway better than most.

He remembers, among other things, Axl, a small, eager guy with long straight hair and big ambitions. Axl Rose fans with arms, stands up and takes and takes and getting up and talking continuously.

Rock Stars drink Jack D.
He said that he and a half years ago from Indiana to Los Angeles to become a rock star and exactly know what it requires:

We must not only be good to play music, we must also look good. We should not just have long hair, you must also use hair spray and hair backcomb.

Axl is the day dressed in leather pants, cowboystøvler and a T-shirt without sleeves, but it is not enough, he says:

You must also use eyeliner and go with headbands, jewelry and tight pants with tiger stripes.

The two Brisbane focus laughing. They will sgu not go in tight pants, where you can see nosserne. They will go in jeans and drink Jack Daniels, because it makes rock stars.

In pakhuset live and Ole Henrik in a small room at the end of a long corridor. There is no door, just a curtain, and the only daylight coming from a small roof windows in the ceiling and some holes in the thin walls.

'Shoot Holes' was the owner explained.

There are no beds or mattresses, as Henrik rocks in an old carpet squares, put the squares on top of one another layer to layer and make way two mattresses where they can sleep.

But they do not sleep many hours a day. At night, they often go to concerts and concerts are often passed on to parties and from parties and the home to some ladies.

They are in all the bars and on all the substances, overturns in neonlight and nightlife and festivals and feasts and celebrations.

Feast stop only when Henrik two months after falling ill and woke up with unprovoked nose bleeds.

"I will die of it here if I did not go home now ', thinking he and decides soon after to take back to Denmark. Ole does not understand his comrade. Despite the gradually tangible consequences of their decadent life, he is determined to be.

"He believed in himself, and I can well understand," said Henrik Aarøe today.

'Ole was an incredibly skilled guitarist and bass player. Everyone looked up to him, and he could score all the beautiful girls. There were always people who would play with him and a gang around him, people who wanted to treat him and say that they were therefore comrades with Ole. There is no doubt that he has confidence at this time, and when I go home, he is still convinced that we can succeed. I remember him telling me that it was absolutely stupid to go home to recharge your batteries.

In early 1984 comes in contact with the Ole heavyrock band LA Guns, through an ad in the newspaper.

He comes to audition, and Tracii Guns can immediately see that Ole has just the right bass player for the band.

He is cool, seems front man, a very hard hitter 'who understand rock'n'roll and looks great on stage. In fact, he looks better than any other bass player, Tracii know.

Ole is part older than the other and talking with thick English accent, but Ole deluding themselves six years younger, and the accent is proving to be an advantage because the German band The Scorpions at the moment is very popular in the United States.

Bad friends with Slash
In a period living at Ole Traciis mother.

He lives with his new band friends, but end up sleeping on the leather seats of his old ruddy amerikanerbil, a Dodge Dart Sport, because he is allergic to cats in her house.

In other periods of sleep the three musicians often in their practice room, where they wake up on the floor between instruments, empty whiskey bottles and amplifiers.

The room is only 30 square meters and with no windows, there is no bath, toilet, on the other side of the courtyard, and the only luxury is an old soft drink vending machine, which they use as a refrigerator for the chocolate bars, the stealing of 7-eleven.

During the late summer of 1984 begins Axl Rose to get more and more in the practice room. He is in a period uvenner with Slash and their common band, Hollywood Rose, and pollinator instead of LA Guns.

Ole and Axl play together, go to concerts together and wake up now and together. Once they wake up stiff frozen in the same cold king size water bed after a party.

They will jointly down to Sunset Strip Tattoo, where Axl gets his first tattoo, and when Ole calling home his parents, will talk with Axl's father oles, Shaft.

Axl and Axel talking about motorcycles and American cars and laughs of the states almost immediately.

Ole and Axl will be better and better friends, and then LA Guns Friday 5th October 1984 playing at one of Hollywood's most famous venues, The Troubadour, it is with Axl Rose as forsanger.

"I want to thank everybody for showing up tonight. We're L.A. Guns, "says Axl Rose when he suffered over midnight yesterday on the stage with Tracii, Rob and Ole.

Axl is more or less a part of the band in late 1984.

No to lipstick and spandex
His fuck-all attitude and wild energy fits well with the band. Ole gangs themselves part and like the charismatic political forsanger.

On the other hand breaks he is not about his propensity for red lipstick, black spandexbukser with cutting the crotch and purple silk scarves.

Axl and Tracii devote much attention to the radiation at the scene.

The hires stylist and sponsored by 'Hot Locks - Rock N' Roll haircut of the 80's'. And before band members concerts are always side by side in front of makeup mirrors in the backstage area with hairdryers, beauty boxes and Jim Beam whiskey. Sometimes even before they have to practice.

'Shut up, which is the backfire ", was one of oles friends once said before a concert, while Ole sat in front of the mirror in the backstage room and made himself clear. They had eye contact in makeup mirror. Ole rolled eyes.

Rock History
At the scene resembles Ole most of all, an angry Barbie Doll.

He has black rivet belt outside of the tight blue jeans and midriff during the leather vest. His closest yndige, bright curls reaching to the shoulders, and the black Mascara on his eyelashes and a thin line black eyeliner under his blue eyes draw the outlines of his pretty, feminine face up and get him to look like a woman more and more.

To see a real rock star in the 1980s.

With bands such as Quiet Riot, Rätt and Motley Crue as pioneers sex and with the help of MTV and music videos increased emphasis on the visual side of music is growing genre Glam metal - also known as hair metal - the great and powerful, and in the 1980s is a good hairdo and a little red cheek crucial if we want to be something about rock music.

It will the boys in the band ...

26. March 1985 writes Ole and his comrades pyntede band rock history. This is Ole just does not know when he goes on stage.

'L.A. Guns - Hollywood Rose presents the band Guns N 'Roses', says with handwritten block letters on a photo-copied flyer, which will be copied and distributed before the concert.

There is also a grain group photo of Rob, Tracii, Izzy, Axl and Ole. Axl stand in front of the picture with her hair down in front of our eyes.

Behind that Ole with his sunglasses with strength and head tilted to one side. Back facing the other three.

The picture is the first of Guns N 'Roses. It is also one of the few pictures of the original setting: Axl Rose, Tracii Guns, Izzy Stradlin, Rob Gardner and Ole Beich.

Fragmentation
What happens in the weeks after the concert is not entirely clear, but since Guns N 'Roses less than a month later play another concert in Los Angeles, it is without Ole.

The guitarist Tracii Guns explains today that Ole himself chose to leave the band.

Tracii Guns can not explain why and tells you that the Danish bass player was respected and had a good relationship with the otherwise not easy omgængelige front man Axl, and the others.

Drummer Rob Gardner has another explanation.

He says that the relationship between Ole and Axl was not always hot, and that it could be one reason for the breach.

Axl was a hard head with a very heated tempers, Ole was not in any shit from anyone - not even from forsangeren - and at length, there was not room for two such big egoer in the same band.

But according to Rob Gardner also had another, perhaps more important reason for the breach, namely that Ole seemed uninvolved, depressed and would not spend enough makeup, go with spandexbukser and like the other floosie up to look well on stage.

'Ole was more metal than Glam', as drummer says.

Initially accepted Ole the glamorous stage shows.

"It has to be taken with," he said.

But as the number of stylist and hours in front of the mirror grew, it was apparently too much for Brisbane offender, who was raised in a provincial town where the men worked at the port, women were at home, and longhaired gay rob the makeup got tæsk on the city's bars.

Unable to hold more hair spray out
According to Rob Gardner pulled Tracii and Axl Danish bass player for the side, and when he subsequently not changed, they threw him out. Ole Beich have several explanations for the breach.

Some of his friends he explains that he was thrown out because he went to a concert instead of practicing with Guns N 'Roses.

The concert was canceled, but the other was sure of oles lack of commitment and threw him out, then.

For other friends and family, he explains that he was tired of the band and even chose to go out, because he could not keep going to go with hair spray and eyeliner, and because the other in Guns N 'Roses was too bad musicians.

"This is some gay fellows who can not play," he said.

But the fags doing well.

In the subsequent period in which Ole played in various unknown and now defunct bands takes GUNS N 'ROSES on their first tour, Hell Tour.

The contract with Geffen
While Ole removes makeup and turn down the stage show, Axl hire strippers to the concerts. Strip Perne play tambourine and throw your clothes on stage in order to boost audiences.

And later, while Ole unsuccessfully seeking work, sign his old band buddies a record deal with Geffen Records, which gives them 75,000 U.S. dollars in advance.

The burning of money on booze, drugs and new clothes, but the record company just throw a new check on the table for their new manager can see that they are great. It is now also up for Ole.

The tear is clearly on him, not least when he hears about the band's tours, concerts and growing success, which is impossible to avoid in Los Angeles in 1985 and the years ahead.

'Why are you not? "Asks one of oles old comrades months later when they happen to surf past MTV and watching a music video with Guns N' Roses.

Downer
He says again and again, that might equally well have been him on stage beside Axl. And he has helped create some of the numbers, as Guns N 'Roses plays.

He is more and more inside burned, more and more depressed, and he takes more and more drugs.

Although he has smoked cannabis and sniff cocaine with Axl and all the others in the meantime with LA Guns and Guns N 'Roses, so does the combination of drugs and psychological downer the whole more seriously.

"He gradually lost his illusions about rock'n'roll. He said it is not directly, but holds, he was crazy annoyed to have gone out of a band that was so large. I could feel him, already when I visited him over there in the autumn of 1985 that he was irritated and disappointed. This was what he dreamed about, and the only thing he could fall back later on, had drugs and alcohol, "said his brother, Anders Beich, today.

Anders Beich is a practicing physician and health researcher specializing in prevention and abuse.

'The entries are not necessarily dangerous in itself but the ability to face adversity and solve problems weakened when we have been accustomed to a loophole away from emotional discomfort, called the use of alcohol or drugs. It is a really bad cocktail to have an uncompromising personality, take drugs and be depressed.

Suicide
From time to call Ole home to his parents in Calcutta. Not to tell how it goes, but to ask if he could borrow money.

The mother and father are aware that it is wrong. That it is getting worse. They suggest repeatedly Ole to come home, but he finds it off.

They send money, sometimes to pay debts, other times to buy a plane ticket to Denmark.

They take loans in the house to afford to send more money - for the entire period exceeding 100,000 dollars in cash and plane tickets - but each time the user Ole money on drugs and never buy a ticket to Denmark.

Since Ole still comes home to Denmark in the summer of 1988, it is under tragic circumstances.

After an unsuccessful suicide attempt in which Ole runs in the wrist and being hospitalized at a hospital, takes Anders, who read medicine in Copenhagen, across the Atlantic to retrieve his big brother.

Ole lives with parents in Brisbane. He is at this stage depending on drugs and alcohol, unable to fend for themselves and live in the room, he had as a boy.

He can no longer play music in the same way. When suicide attempt he cut some nerves over in the left arm and lost part of the feeling and motor skills in some of the fingers. From time to Ole still talking about music, but friends avoids talking about Guns N 'Roses.

Behandlingshjem
When Ole come to visit, saves the plate 'Appetite for Destruction' - Guns N 'Roses' big-selling debut album - behind the plate.

Oles abuse is massive. He is drinking schnapps of ølglas,'s plate, shave lotions of the bottle and eat the mother's blood pressure plays. In the end she will have to eliminate even household spirits from the house. He comes home the middle of the night and sleeps sometimes for days without showing signs of wanting to wake up, so parents several times to be nervous and after calling an ambulance.

After months without progress and without it public treatment system has something to offer, sending parents Ole at a private institution.

Here he lives only for a short time before he sticks by.

He moves only with a girlfriend and later entered with his brother in Copenhagen. It ends with the brother of the late summer of 1991 - almost simultaneously with the Guns N 'Roses publisher albums' Use Your Illusion I' and 'Use Your Illusion II' - as a last desperate resort buy a bag Elefantøl, packages its Opel Cadet and running Ole for treatment institution Egeborg in Los Angeles.

Wednesday 16th October 1991 at half past ten in the evening calling a young man for permission.

At its run along the paths around the lakes he has seen a man wearing only underpants jump in the lake and start swimming toward the center.

As the man in the water was out of sight, the man ran on the path around the lake to the opposite wide, but could not see the man in the water.

That is why he ran into a telephone booth at Old Kongevej to summon help.

Police and fire brigade arrives at the spot minutes later. A witness on the banks explaining the police that the man in the water is his friend Ole, whom he knows from reading the institution Egeborg.

Fire fighters put two Boats in the water with two divers in each. With lights and cry, they seek after Ole, but it is almost impossible to see anything in the dark and grumsede water.

A half hour later suspended the search.

Booze and drugs in blood
The next days will continue frømænd search. Visibility in the water is about 20 centimeters, so frømændene feel up to scratch.

When they find something of interest, puts the face right up to a test to identify it. But the work is virtually impossible, and in an internal report for the fire service:

"Stop the search - we find him not!".

Only in the morning 7th November finds a passer-by a man floating in vandskorpen five feet from the bank in the northwestern corner of Sct. Jørgens Lake.

Autopsy shows that the man is 36-year-old Ole Beich. Ole drowned, but heroin and a BAC of 1.48 has been effective in death.

Ole Beich lie buried in Christchurch next to his father Shaft, who died in 1995.

Axl Rose is the only remaining member of the original Guns N 'Roses. After the commercial peak in the early 1990s the band in years against the mid-1990s to creak, and the original members except forsangeren left the band.

Today Axl Rose - who owns the name Guns N 'Roses - along with new band members at the sixth studiealbum,' Chinese Democracy '.

The story of Ole Beich and Guns N 'Roses is a journalism researcher reconstruction of real events. All descriptions and details based on sources, namely around 15 hours of interviews with Ole Beichs family, friends and fellow band from Denmark and the United States as well as an extensive photographic material, the police report on oles death, sound recordings, books and letters.

Hey!

I live near Esbjerg, Denmark, and work with someone that used to know Ole Beich. He can remember Ole being good at picking up girls, and can also remember passing by Ole’s family’s house where he used the practice guitar – apparently it was _really_ loud.

Beich is by no means well known in Denmark, you have to be GN’R fan or a local to of ever heard of his story. A couple of years ago there was this great article about him in a Danish newspaper, and I see it’s been posted here in English, but in all respect to the original poster, it looks like it’s just gone through Google Translate, and it pretty hard to read. I’ve gone through the article manually, and I hope it’s easier to read now.
Yeah. Beich is just a footnote in GN’R history, but I think it’s a great story about young guy trying to fulfill his dream. Remember, this is the early 80’s, before cheap air travel and Internet communication and everything…

The story of Ole from Guns N’ Roses
Ole is sitting on a bench at Sct. Jørgens Lake in Copenhagen together with a friend and debating whether you can swim across to the other side of the lake.

Ole thinks you easily can. He has drunk 12 high alcohol beers.

He has always been the type who wants to prove that it is possible to do both this and that. He strips down to his underwear, and walks into the water.

It is cold, about nine degrees, and past than ten o'clock in the evening. October darkness has settled over Copenhagen.

From the shore Ole’s friend and a passing jogger can see Ole disappear in the darkness.

Shortly after, they cannot see him, only to hear him shout to them from time to time.

Believe in making a breakthrough
This is the story of Ole Beich, a young musician from Esbjerg, who in the early 1980s travelled to the U.S. to pursue his dream of becoming a rock star, and in 1985 is a founder member of Guns N 'Roses.

A story about the largely unknown Danish member of one of history’s biggest rock bands. A story about the joy of playing music and the discomfort of squeezing yourself into a pair of black spandex trousers.

And a story about faith and hope for a breakthrough, while losing faith in yourself.

The story starts in the latter half of the 1960’s in a small detached house on the outskirts of Esbjerg.

The Beich family is getting ready for another ordinary day.

As usual Ole (12) and Anders (7) have to go to school. As usual, the two brothers sit side by side, each with their own bowls.

Practice everyday
And as usual, Ole pciks up the box of Kellogg's Cornflakes and tips some into his bowl. But this morning there are be not only cornflakes coming out of the box: a small note slides out along with the yellow cornflakes landing in his bowl.

'Congratulations, you've won a guitar', reads the note.

Ole jumps up, rejoicing. He has played little in his father's jazz guitar and long dreamed of getting his own.

The dream is later delivered directly to his door in a cardboard box from Kellogg's.

Ole practices day in and day out. Sometimes alone in his room.

Other times, together with two companions in the small washroom, where they can barely squeeze one drum set and two guitar amplifiers in between the kitchen door, washing machine and some cupboards. He practices and practices and practices.
And often forgets everything about doing his homework.

When his parents ask about school, their son shrugs and hurries into his room to find his guitar.

Ole can do much better, write the worried teachers from their school reports. They are right, but Ole does not want to do better. He does not want to go to school. He later drops out of a polytechnic course as a technical drawer, and never completes other formal education the obligatory high school.

"He only wanted to play music," said Ole’s mother, Birgit Beich, today.

"But at the same time, he wanted to prove that he could be somebody. He never said it directly ... So I cannot remember that he has said, "Now I’ll go to the United States, and I will show that I can”, but there is no doubt that this was why he wanted to go. He really wanted to prove that he could”'.

Ole has a vision
In his teenage years, Ole Beich is well known in Esbjerg.

For his long blonde hair, for his ability to pick up pretty girls and then of course for his musical talent.

In his early adult years he moves to Copenhagen and plays, among other bands, in Mercyful Fate, which later get a record deal in England and go on to be a source of inspiration for Metallica. But he quits the band and travels to the US.

He tells his parents that he would travel to America to play music and earn enough money to buy a house for the family. He will buy two Harley-Davidson motorcycles, one for himself and one for the father, who has a motorcycle license and loves to cruise. And he will return to Esbjerg to see his Ford Lincoln be hoisted down from a ship then drive around town in it.

In October 1983 he takes off.

The rain is pouring down in Esbjerg habour, as Ole Beich together with his friend Henry Aarøe board the DFDS ferry to England, from where they will fly to Los Angeles.

Ole has sunglasses on. In fact, they are ordinary glasses with strength, but he got opticians in Esbjerg to tone them, so they look exactly like sunglasses.

It is cooler, he thinks.

On the quay are his parents, Henrik parents and some friends.

The mother waving as the two young men appear on deck, but Ole is waving not. It is difficult to wave in the thick motorcycle jacket with rivets and double zippers, and also rock stars don’t wave. Especially not to their mothers.

Audition
On departing the plane in Los Angeles and passing through the arrivals hall, Ole has only one thing on his mind: He will find some musicians to play with. And it cannot go fast enough.

As Henrik rents a car, the aspiring musician is in the newsstand, buying a stack of newspapers. Scounting quickly through the ads, where bands are seeking new members.

There are many: bands which seek guitarists, bands which seek drummers, bands which seek bass players, bands which seek singers.

Ole, who already in the meantime with Mercyful Fate switched from the guitar to bass - allegedly because of the fierce competition among guitarists - looks in the category for bass and heavy rock.

He calls right away, and the very next day, he has the first appointment to come to audition in Los Angeles.

It is no coincidence that Ole and Henrik selected Los Angeles. It is the place to be for musicians. The city of dreams. It was here, The Doors broke through.

It was here, Neil Young played his first solo concert.

It was here that Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention recorded their most lauded albums. And it was here Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin and The Byrds hung out.

Even Elvis Presley visited regularly when he was alive.

In the music magazine Rolling Stone has Ole read about “the epicentre” Sunset Strip, the gambling sites, The Troubadour, Roxy and the Rainbow Bar and dreamed himself away from bars in Esbjerg. Into the heat of rock stars and models.

"Could you imagine going to bed with Brooke Shields?", He asked his friend Henrik before they went.

Meetings of the unknown Rose
Henrik could well imagine going to bed with the 18-year-old supermodel and actress, whom he had seen in a magazine. It would be cool.

Ole and Henrik never met Brooke Shields, but they quickly meet some other celebrities:

At the Rainbow Bar they randomly encounter the band members from Motley Crue, which they later become friends with, through newspaper ads Ole get to audition with Bill Ward, drummer of heavy rock band Black Sabbath, and one day they meet a guy called Axl.

At this point Axl Rose is not famous.

He has like Ole Beich and a lot of other young and aspiring musicians traveled to Los Angeles to try their luck.

The two hang out at the same bars, trying their luck for the same auditions, and after an audition Axl and a few other musicians go with Ole and Henrik to go to an old warehouse on Sunset Boulevard, where the two Danes live in a period. The warehouse has previously been storage for for a shopping mall, but has been turned into a small recording studio and a couple of spare rooms.

They smoke pot, drink booze and talk about music.

They do this this most every day, but Henrik remembers this day better than most.

He remembers, among other things, Axl, a small, eager guy with long straight hair and big ambitions. Axl Rose waves his arms, stands up, sits down, stands up and talks continuously.

Rock Stars drink Jack D.
He said that he travelled from Indiana to Los Angeles six months ago to become a rock star and knew exactly what was required:

You must not only be good at playing music, you must also look good. You should not just have long hair, you must also use hair spray and “backcombed” hair.

Axl is dressed in leather pants, cowboy boots and a sleeveless T-shirt, but it is not enough, he says:

You must also use eyeliner and wear headbands, jewelry and tight pants with tiger stripes.

The two guys from Esbjerg laughed. They did not want to wear tight pants which made their “packages” visible. They wanted to wear jeans and drink Jack Daniels, because that is what rock stars do.

In the warehouse Ole and Henrik live in a small room at the end of a long corridor. There is no door, just a curtain, the only daylight coming from small roof windows in the ceiling and some holes in the thin walls.

'Bullet holes' the owner explained.

There are no beds or mattresses, so Henrik cuts out an old carpet into squares, put the squares on top of one another to make two mattresses which they can sleep on.

But they do not sleep many hours a day. At night, they often go to concerts and concerts are often followed by parties and sometimes from parties back home with girls.

They are in all the bars and on all the substances, confounding themselves in neon lights and nightlife.

The party only stops when Henrik two months later falls ill, and starts waking up unprovoked nosebleeds.

"I will die of this if I did not go home now ', he thinks and decides soon after to go back to Denmark. Ole does not understand his friend. Despite the gradual tangible consequences of their decadent life, he is determined to stay.

"He believed in himself, and I can well understand," said Henrik Aarøe today.

'Ole was an incredibly skilled guitarist and bass player. Everyone looked up to him, and he could pick up all the beautiful girls. There were always people who would play with him and a gang around him, people who wanted to meet him and say that they were friends with Ole. There is no doubt that he has confidence at this time, and when I went home, he is still convinced that we could succeed. I remember him telling me that it was absolutely stupid to go home “to recharge your batteries”.

In early 1984 Ole comes into contact with heavy rock band LA Guns, through an ad in the newspaper.

He comes to audition, and Tracii Guns can immediately see that Ole is just the right bass player for the band.

He is cool, the front man thinks, a real “hard hitter” who understands rock'n'roll and looks great on stage. In fact, he looks better than any other bass player, Tracii knows.

Ole is significantly older than the others and speaks in English with a thich Danish accent, but Ole claims to be six years younger than he actually is, and the accent is proving to be an advantage because the German band The Scorpions were at that point very popular in the United States.

Not friends with Slash
For a period Ole is living at Tracii’s mother’s house.

He lives with his new band friends, but ends up sleeping on the leather seats of his old red/brown Dodge Dart Sport, because he is allergic to the cats in her house.

In other periods the three musicians often sleep in their practice room, where they wake up on the floor between instruments, empty whiskey bottles and amplifiers.

The room is only 30 square meters and with no windows, there is no shower, and the toilet is on the other side of the courtyard, and the only luxury is an old soft drink vending machine, which they use as a refrigerator for the chocolate bars, which they steal from a 7-eleven.

During the late summer of 1984 Axl Rose starts visiting the practice room more and more. At this time he has fallen out with Slash common band, Hollywood Rose, and start practicing with LA Guns instead.

Ole and Axl play together, go to concerts together, and wake up together sometimes. Once they wake up frozen stiff in the same cold king size water bed after a party.

They go to Sunset Strip Tattoo together, where Axl gets his first tattoo, and when Ole calls home to his parents, Axl want to talk to Ole’s father, named Aksel.

Axl and Aksel talk about motorcycles and American cars and laugh about having almost the same names

Ole and Axl become be better and better friends, and when LA Guns Friday 5th October 1984 play at one of Hollywood's most famous venues, The Troubadour, it is with Axl Rose as lead singer.

"I want to thank everybody for showing up tonight. We're L.A. Guns, "says Axl Rose when he goes on stage with Tracii, Rob and Ole, just past midnight.

Axl is more or less a part of the band in late 1984.

No to lipstick and spandex
His “fuck it” attitude and energy fits well with the band. Ole curses a lot himself and he likes the caramatic lead singer.

On the other hand, he does not like the red lipstick, black spandex trousers with exposed crotches and purple silk scarves.

Axl and Tracii devote much attention to their look on stage.

They hire stylists and are sponsored by 'Hot Locks - Rock N' Roll haircut of the 80's'. And before concerts band members are always side by side in front of makeup mirrors in the backstage area with hairdryers, beauty boxes and Jim Beam whiskey. Sometimes even before they practice.

“Damn, that’s fucked up", was what one of Ole’s friends once said before a concert, while Ole sat in front of the mirror in the backstage room and made himself ready. They had eye contact in makeup mirror. Ole rolled eyes his eyes.

Rock History
On stage, Ole resembles an angry Barbie doll.

He has black rivet belt outside of the tight blue jeans and is bare chested under his leather vest. His blonde curls reach to his shoulders, and the black mascara on his eyelashes and thin line of black eyeliner under his blue eyes draw the outlines of his pretty, feminine face up and get him to look like a woman more and more.

That is how real rock stars looked in the 1980’s.

With bands such as Quiet Riot, Ratt and Motley Crue as pioneers and with the help of MTV and music videos increased emphasis on the visual side of music, the genre glam metal - also known as hair metal – grows to be the great and powerful, and in the 1980s is a good hairdo and a little cheek flush is crucial if you want to be something in rock music.

That is what the boys in the band want.

26. March 1985 Ole and his glam band mates make rock history. But Ole doesn’t know it when they walk onto the stage.

'L.A. Guns - Hollywood Rose presents the band Guns N 'Roses', says with handwritten capital letters on a photo-copied flyer, which will be copied and distributed before the concert.

There is also a grainy group photo of Rob, Tracii, Izzy, Axl and Ole. Axl stands in front of the picture with his hair down in front of his eyes.

Behind him Ole stands with his sunglasses with strength and head tilted to one side. Back him are the other three members.

The picture is the first of Guns N 'Roses. It is also one of the few pictures of the original setting: Axl Rose, Tracii Guns, Izzy Stradlin, Rob Gardner and Ole Beich.

Break up
What happens in the weeks after the concert is not entirely clear, but when Guns N 'Roses less than a month later plays another concert in Los Angeles, it is without Ole.

The guitarist Tracii Guns explains today that Ole himself chose to leave the band.

Tracii Guns cannot explain why and says that the Danish bass player was respected and had a good relationship with the otherwise not easy to get along with front man Axl, and the others.

Drummer Rob Gardner has another explanation.

He says that the relationship between Ole and Axl was not always good, and that it could be one reason for his departure.

Axl was a hard head with a very heated temper, Ole was not in for taking any shit from anyone - not even from the lead singer - and in the long run there was not room for two such big egos in the same band.

But according to Rob Gardner also had another, perhaps more important reason for the breach, namely that Ole seemed uninvolved, depressed and would not wear enough makeup, wear spandex trousers and glam himself up like the others would on stage.

'Ole was more metal than Glam', as the drummer says.

Initially Ole accepted the glamorous stage shows.

"It has to be included" he said.

But as the number of stylists and hours in front of the mirror grew, it was apparently too much for the guy from Esbjerg, who was raised in a provincial town where the men worked at the harbour, women were at home, and longhaired “gays” wore makeup and got beaten up in local bars.

Couldn’t stand the hair spray
According to Rob Gardner, Tracii and Axl pulled the Danish bass player to one side, and when he subsequently did not change his attitude, they threw him out. Ole Beich have several explanations for the breach.

To some of his friends he explains that he was thrown out because he went to a concert instead of practicing with Guns N 'Roses.

The concert in question was canceled, but the others were angry about Ole’s lack of commitment and threw him out.

For other friends and family, he explains that he was tired of the band and even chose to leave, because he could not keep wearing hair spray and eyeliner, and because the other in Guns N 'Roses was too poor musicians.

"They are a group of “gays” that can’t play," he said.

But the “gays” are doing well.

In the subsequent period in which Ole played in various unknown and now defunct bands, Guns N’ Roses went on their first tour, Hell Tour.

The contract with Geffen
While Ole removed the makeup and turned down the stage show, Axl hired strippers for the concerts. The strippers played tambourine and stripped onstage in order to boost audiences.

And later, while Ole unsuccessfully was seeking work, his old band buddies signeda record deal with Geffen Records, which gives them $75,000 in advance.

They burned the money on booze, drugs and new clothes, but the record company just threw a new check on the table because their new manager could see that they were great. Ole is also beginning to realize this.

His departure from the band gets him down, not least when he hears about the band's tours, concerts and growing success, which is impossible to avoid in Los Angeles in 1985 and the years ahead.

'Why are you not in the band? "Asks one of Ole’s old friends months later when they happen to zap past MTV and watch a music video with Guns N' Roses.

Downward spiral
He says again and again, that might equally well have been him on stage beside Axl. And that he has helped write some of the tracks that Guns N’ Roses are playing.

He is becoming more and more introverted, more and more depressed, and he takes more and more drugs.

Although he has smoked cannabis and took cocaine with Axl and all the others during his time with LA Guns and Guns N 'Roses, the combination of drugs and his ongoing psychological downer makes the whole situation at this stage much worse.

"He gradually lost his illusions about rock'n'roll. He did not say it directly, but inside he was crazy and annoyed at having left a band that went on to be so big. I could feel that already when I visited him over there in the autumn of 1985 that he was irritated and disappointed. This was what he dreamed about, and the only thing he could fall back on was drugs and alcohol, "said his brother, Anders Beich, today.

Anders Beich is a practicing physician and health researcher specializing in prevention and abuse.

“The drugs are not necessarily dangerous themselves, but the ability to face adversity and solve problems is weakened when we have been accustomed to a loophole away from emotional discomfort, in the form of the use of alcohol or drugs. It is a really bad cocktail to have an uncompromising personality, take drugs and be depressed.”

Suicide attempt
From time to time Ole called home to his parents in Esbjerg. Not to tell them how it was going for him, but to ask if he could borrow money.

The mother and father are aware that something is wrong. And that it is getting worse. They suggest repeatedly that Ole should come home, but he ignores their advice.

They send money, sometimes to pay debts, other times to buy for a plane ticket to Denmark.

They take loans in the house to afford to send more money - for the entire period exceeding $20,000 in cash and plane tickets - but each time Ole uses the money on drugs and never buys a ticket to Denmark.

When Ole finally comes home to Denmark in the summer of 1988, it is under tragic circumstances.

After an unsuccessful suicide attempt in which Ole cuts his wrist and is hospitalized, his brother Anders who is steadying medicine in Copenhagen, travels across the Atlantic to retrieve his big brother.

Ole moves in with his parents in Esbjerg. At this stage he is dependent on drugs and alcohol, unable to look after himself and staying in the room he had as a boy.

He can no longer play music in the same way. During the suicide attempt he cut some nerves in his left arm and lost part of the feeling and movement skills in some of his fingers. From time to time Ole still talks about music, but friends avoid talking about Guns N 'Roses.

Rehab
When Ole come to visit friends, 'Appetite for Destruction' - Guns N 'Roses' big-selling debut album – is hidden from view.

Ole’s substance abuse is massive. He is drinking schnapps of beer glasses, any household spirit and stealing his mother’s blood pressure pills. He comes home the middle of the night and sleeps sometimes for days without showing signs of waking up, causing his parents to be nervous and call an ambulance several times.

After months without progress and without the public health system being able to offer help, Ole parents send him to a private institution.

Here he stays only for a short time before he escapes.

He moves in with a girlfriend, and the later over to his brother in Copenhagen. It ends with the brother in late summer 1991 - almost simultaneously with the Guns N 'Roses releasing the albums' Use Your Illusion I' and 'Use Your Illusion II' - as a last desperate resort to buy a bag of high alcohol beers, pack his Opel Cadet and drive Ole to a treatment institution called Egeborg on the island of Lolland.

Wednesday 16th October 1991 at half past ten in the evening, a young man calls the emergency services.
During his jogging run he has seen a man wearing only his underwear jump in the lake and start swimming toward the middle of it.

As the man in the water was out of sight, the jogger ran on the path around the lake to the opposite side, but could not see the man in the water.

So the jogger ran onto a telephone box at Old Kongevej to call for help help.

Police and fire brigade arrives at the spot minutes later. A witness on the banks explains to the police that the man in the water is his friend Ole, whom he knows from rehab the institution Egeborg.

Fire fighters put two boats in the water with two divers in each. With lights and shouts, they seek Ole, but it is almost impossible to see anything in the dark and murky water.

A half hour later they suspended the search.

Booze and drugs in blood
The next days will continue divers search. Visibility in the water is about 20 centimeters, so the divers feel their way along the bottom of the lake.

When they find something of interest, they have to put their face right up to it to identify it. But the work is virtually impossible, and in an internal report for the fire service writes:

"Stop the search - we find him not!".

Not until the morning of 7th November does a passer-by find the body of a man floating five feet from the bank in the northwestern corner of Sct. Jørgens lake.

The autopsy shows that the man is 36-year-old Ole Beich. Ole drowned, but heroin and high levels of alcohol are also found in his blood.

Ole Beich lies buried in Esbjerg next to his father Aksel, who died in 1995.

The story of Ole Beich and Guns N 'Roses is a journalistic researched reconstruction of real events. All descriptions and details are based on sources, namely around 15 hours of interviews with Ole Beich’s family, friends and fellow band members from Denmark and the United States as well as extensive photographic material, the police report on Ole’s death, sound recordings, books and letters.

I think Beich’s story is interesting for a couple of reasons.

Firstly you have to admire someone as committed as that to following a dream. Many of us harbor dreams of making it (in whatever shape or form is relevant for the individual in question), but few of us are willing to sacrifice our status quo in pursuit of an improbable(?) goal. As I mentioned before, the world was different and “bigger” back then. Beich came from a medium sized town in a Scandinavian country. Back then you couldn’t just Google information about how and what to do this and that in an instance. You had to have a real and deep interest the topic, and do your “research” the hard way.

Secondly, Beich’s departure from the band. If it really was his own decision, and based on the fact that he couldn’t handle the glam look, you can only imagine how he must feel when the band dropped that look within 6-12 months of his departure, and went on to be what they became. What a terrible and irreparable life decision he made. In a way, it can be compared to big decisions we all make in our lives, like should I quit my job a move to another part of the country? Should I breakup with my girl/boyfriend? Should I… All big decisions that have to be made, and may have consequences for rest of your life. Sometimes you make good calls, sometimes you don’t.

Exactly Ole Beich's story remainds be of Vains of Jenna, a little bit.5 guys from some small Swedish city, leaving all behind and moving to USA and having some success.

There are always big decision to make in life, all you can do is move on and don't look back and not dwindle on missed opportunities, that's how it works for me anyway.

I think it's good to believe in what you do and throw yourself into it, but some people give up and they completely give up and never recover. People in bands can be very harsh and insensitive, when they're hell bent for success and there is no backup plan. Some have jobs or go to school, but it was the type of work that didn't pay much and needed flexibility, or the school was on the parents' dime and wasn't being taken all that seriously.

Axl had pretty strong ideas about the direction he wanted to go in at the time, but you can't be in a band and have too big of an ego right from the beginning. There's a TON of bands that don't get out of the garage and basement because of it. They have to work together, not against each other.

One thing that seems to be the case in GNR history is Axl not being the most confident songwriter, and I think when Slash and Axl got into that pissing contest over the songs, Slash may have taken a dig at his songs and he took it personally. He has song ideas and does a good job with lyrics, but I think collaborating is where he feels more comfortable than trying to come up with an entire album on his own.
