So basically respectable guitarists should learn songs that most people learn ?

Besides, I'm into none of these bands. I love GnR and like the Aerosmith classics but RHCP, Metallica and Black Sabbath don't do anything for me.

I think Hendrix has some very tasty material but I'd rather have his feel and flair than just know how to play some of his songs.

No, every respectable guitarist doesn't learn these songs, but from my point of view these are what I feel, made me the guitar player I am.

It's a point of view question, essentially...

By learning Jimi's albums front to back, you will definitely get a comprehensive understanding of his style and flair, even when you go to create your own music. Doesn't mean you have to make every band a Jimi coverband.

By all means, learn anything that makes you want to keep learning. That is the main thing.

Meh, play what you want

Yeah, there are more than enough classic rock enthusiasts out there covering that stuff. I guess it's pretty entry level but I would fault anybody for not knowing any of those not for note. :shrugs:

Well, there factually* are more than enough of them. YouTube is full of 14 year olds rocking GN'R tunes on their Epiphones and Marshall MGs :rofl-lol:

It's not about what you can play when this question comes up. It's more about a significant song that you learned. A song that made you think differently about guitar or music in some way. The songs I listed all did that. I know 1000s of songs and forgot even more...

Go back over your list and name 5 songs that really did something for you on guitar.

And yes...learning covers (in my opinion) gets you about 20% of the way to 'amazing' in a musician's ears... after that it's what comes out of your head that makes you a killer guitar player.

Regular folk think if you can string together 3 chords and make it sound reasonably like the CD, you must be a pro.

5 songs that really signified milestones for me on the guitar:

Smells Like Teen Spirit - first song I learned all the way through, also the song I became proficient with power chords.

Sweet Child O Mine - the riff was one of the first things I learned on guitar, daunting thing to start out with but definitely got me off to a good start (took me a long while to get the solo though, still not perfect).

Come Together - one of thse first few songs I learned, this one just really sticks out in my mind. I remember how cool I thought it was when I learned it but now its just another song in the catalog.

Iron Man - first song I played that really made me feel like I was getting somewhere, especially the solo.

Comfortably Numb - this one really made myself proud, I dont know many other songs with remotely challenging solos because the amount of time required to learn them makes me lose interest fairly quickly.

My how this year flew by, it seems like it was just the other day I was sitting in my parent's basement showing my little brother how cool it was that I learned the riff to Back in Black. Think it wouldve been fun if I took a video or two of myself playing back then just so I can see how far Ive come.

Mine:

1. Hero of The Day (Metallica): The first song I learned

2. Dirt (Alice In Chains): I learned that a good riff requires more than 3 power chords being repeated over and over. It requires melody.

3. Master Of Puppets (Metallica): This one taught me that the way you pick makes a huge difference: downpick it all the way...

4. Combustion (Meshuggah): Complex song, polyrhythms. I was introduced to the world of ER's and baritone guitars thanks to this song.

5. Rotten Apple (Alice In Chains): Thanks to this one, I noticed how effects and pedals are important in order to create the atmosphere you're looking for the song.
