The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

I dunno why people hate Quantom so much. I think Craig is an excellent Bond

I think a big part of it is because it is really dark, they took a lot from the Bourne series and Bond was too hung up with Vesper when they are used to him moving on. It kind of discredited him as a super Agent.

Quantum in general just felt like a rushed job, plus Casino Royale set the bar pretty high. Part of the problem with Quantum was that the script wasn't finished prior to filming because of the writer's strike. Apparently Marc Forster and Daniel Craig actually did rewrites on the set to try to make sense of it otherwise it might have been even worse. There's lots of good (the opera scene, the taxi drive, the rooftops chase, and so on) but lots of bad too. Forster didn't do a bad job but I don't think some of his directorial choices were right for Bond. The opening car chase, for example, was a mess with all that shaky cam.

That said, Craig's performance made the film for me. I really like the relationship that's developing between Dench's M and Craig's Bond.

He really is. But then again, it's that after the pile of shit that were the Pierce Brosnan movies, having Cassino Royale, which is one of the best bond movies ever was a huge surprise to bond fans. Daniel Craig is a hell of a Bond but he got a boost from the awesome movies he got to do instead of the shit Pierce had to be in.

I thought the first three Brosnan films were good, Die Another Day was horrible though. Awesome pretitle sequence though, had potential but they fucked it up.

Didn't know that about the Writer's Strike, that makes more sense. The opera scene was my favorite part. Beautifully shot. Craig was awesome like usual. My biggest beef he didn't bang that Bolivian chick.

I can't take the Brosnan movies. Too bad for him... he looked really cool as JB. Goldeneye was the best but it was still kinda weak, IMO.

Goldeneye was the "Best of James Bond", Russians, betrayals, sexy but sadistic female henchmen, cars being chased by a fucking TANK. Tina Turner doing the credits who sounds like Shirley from Goldfinger.

It was still a step back from what they did with Licence to Kill. They could have build something with that. They shook things up with Dalton, but since the film didn't do well at the Box Office they decided to play it safe with Brosnan. I feel with Daniel Craig they went back to Dalton level awesomeness.

Die Another Day had a lot of potential. The first half of the film is pretty good and dare I say innovative (Bond being captured, the torture being part of the title sequence, and so on). Once Halle Berry arrives it's all downhill though. I never liked the gene therapy thing and once Bond arrives in Iceland the action takes over and whatever story there might have been gets lost. Then the god-awful CGI during the surfing stunt. I've seen Pixar movies that look more realistic. The fencing scene is great though.

And yes, he should have banged Olga Kurylenko. He did bang Agent Fields though, and she's like 20 years younger. Good for him!

It looks like he'll have his way with the ladies of Skyfall judging from the trailer.

Finally, he needs to up his body count. Agent Fields was hot though, could do without the Diana Rigg inspired hairdo. There can only be one Diana Rigg.

Haley Berry and the penis jokes. Oh and the guy wearing a suit that controls a satellite.

You know who would have made a great James Bond? Liam Neeson. Actually was offered the role back in the early 90's when they were looking for a replacement for Dalton. Didn't want to be a typecast now he's in Taken

Someone else who appreciates Licence to Kill, it felt like a Fleming novel put on screen again, possibly for the first time since On Her Majesty's Secret Service, same with Casino Royale. Licence was my favourite JB film by far though, Robert Davi was absolutely superb as Sanchez, a lot of it was fucking brutal, you really felt for Bond, the characters had multiple dimensions to them, there was badassery a-plenty... Looking forward to Skyfall, although I probably need to see Quantum first, I tried to watch it once and got bored about 15 minutes in. Maybe I need to make more of an effort.

I think they intended to use Dalton for another movie, but legal ramblings held up production on Goldeneye (they were actually writing a different script before that), and by that time I think Dalton and them came to a mutual agreement.

If only Daniel Craig looked like Pierce Brosnan...I think that combination would be the perfect Bond for the 21st century. Craig is easily the best Bond actor since Connery. I think this movie will prove it.

The only thing I have a gripe with so far (and it's a very small one...) is that the "Bond, James Bond" sounded a bit weak. But if that's the biggest gripe I'm gonna have with this film, I think I'll love it.

Okay.. this thread needs a best-to-worst Bond list post and here's mine:

  1. Roger Moore (LOVE this guy)

  2. Sean Connery

  3. Daniel Craig/Timothy Dalton (Can't decide)

  4. Pierce Brosnan

  5. George Lazenby

We should also get a top 5 or 10 movies (unless people want to rank them all)

Anyway, my answer is:

  1. 1. Sean Connery

    2. Daniel Craig

    3. Roger Moore (A View To A Kill was hard to watch)

    4. Pierce Brosnan

    5. Timothy Dalton (TLD was great, didn't like LTK as much)

    6. George Lazenby

Also I agree with whoever said the intro to DAD was great. I wish they would've played with that "Bond being tortured" plot-line a bit.

For me:

1. Timothy Dalton

2. Sean Connery

3. Daniel Craig

4. George Lazenby

5. Pierce Brosnan

6. Roger Moore

Favourite Movies: Licence To Kill, Casino Royale, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice and For Your Eyes Only (strangely enough, given my list)

Daniel Craig

Sean Connery

Timothy Dalton

Pierce Brosnan

George Lazenby/Roger Moore

I loved all of them. I feel Lazenby doesn't get the respect he deserves. He can't act (a few scenes did surprise me though) but the man was really good looking and charming so he was convincing on that level and George Lazenby himself was a killing machine having been in the SAS and trained in the martial arts. He was actually going to work with Bruce Lee before he died. He could have been one of the best Bonds if United Artists were comfortable with building up on a more serious Bond.

Whenever they make a Bond film that got realistic and daring they puss out and make something profitable. OHMSS could have been the start of a series of awesome Bond films close to the books but since it did not make enough money they tossed George a side and abandoned the story. For Your Eyes Only was the second attempt, easily one of the best Bond films, then they did Octopussy, a fun film but a step back. Licence to Kill as mentioned but now since Casino Royale and how audiences crave something more like the Bourne films, they are free to be daring with Bond. The Edgy brutality of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace mixed with Goldfinger. Now that would make a great film.

Bond films are either really good or really bad. Here's the bad ones

You Only Live Twice (Only Connery saved it)

The Man with the Golden Gun

Moonraker

Die Another Day

I'd mention Live and Let Die or A View to a Kill for obvious reasons. Live was controversial, the fact most of the villains were black made people think it was racist so they decided to make fun of rednecks too to make up for it. Turned out to be one of the most hilarious sequences in a Bond film ever. Jane Seymour was stunning so that made a bad film good. A View to a Kill may have had Roger Moore pushing sixty banging girls in their twenties but Christopher Walken was the bad guy. Enough said.

But these films for the most part, really depended on the awesome leading men. Even Lazenby won be over when he said "This never happend to the other fellow"

Top Bond films for me

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Casino Royale

Goldfinger

For Your Eyes Only

Licence to Kill

From Russia with Love

I like the delivery of the line. As iconic as it is, it became a bit of a cliché during the Brosnan era and I always felt that Pierce left too long a pause. In other words, the line became clunky and didn't sound like he was actually introducing himself. The worst offense is in The World Is Not Enough when Denise Richards asks his name as the test site is blowing up and he goes "The name is Bond" and then waits for the elevator to reach the top before finishing.

I thought Craig gave a fine delivery of it at the end of Casino Royale and here again it sounds very casual, as if he is actually introducing himself instead of just saying it to make the audience cheer. I liked that it was absent in Quantum since Connery didn't say it in all of his films either.

James Bond what are your thoughts on Craigg

He might be the best Bond of all. At the very least he's the best since Connery. He has elements of both the literary and past cinematic character, almost a hybrid of Connery and Dalton. I liked Dalton's "back to Fleming" approach but he didn't handle the lighter moments as well as he did the darker moments.

Since we're onto the rankings, mine would be:

1. Craig/Connery

2. Dalton

3. Brosnan

4. Moore

5. Lazenby

Really though, I like them all. They all brought their own stamp to the franchise. For not being an actor, Lazenby actually didn't do a bad job. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the best films in the franchise. Some of my other favorites are Casino Royale, From Russia With Love, The Living Daylights, and Thunderball.

I also liked the fact that it was casual, like he was genuinely introducing himself. The reason why I didn't like it is the way he said it. It sounds just like Le Chiffre, if for some reason he would say that. Again, this is only a (very) small gripe.

Someone in the Flim thread pointed out how beautiful the opera scene was in QOS. I just wanted to say here that I totally agree, and it's my favorite scene of that film.

I thought the reason Dalton didn't do more than two was due to financial problems at the studio and a row over the rights or something? Living Daylights is one of my favourites and he was a fantastic Bond.
