The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

He seemed so youthful. He was still doing interviews, tour dates, UNICEF work, etc... You really thought he'd live forever.

The cancer must have come quick. At least that probably means he didn't suffer long. He's also now the first official Bond to leave us. I mean, 89 isn't bad at all. He certainly had a great life and career.

This is a rough week for Bond. :(

Rest in peace Sir Roger!

Looks like I'll have to watch Casino Royale and a Roger Bond later this week.

RIP Roger. He was my least favorite Bond, but I can't deny that his movies were a lot of fun to watch if nothing else.

Yesterday was an absolute cunt of a day between this, the Manchester attack, and I found out one of my Maiden friends had passed away.

 Sorry for your loss.

Connery and Moore are the two Bonds really, the two polarities. Everybody else is post Connery and Moore. Everybody else is judged according to them two: ''30% Moore, 70% Sean'' and vice versa. That is how we see Bonds.

Sean is the complete Bond.  Roger, as good as he is, has a sort of a niceguy touch that betrays the character a bit, he should have that cunty side to him emanated from Connery, along with all the charm and all that.  You MAYBE could argue Rog' looked the part a very tiny little hairs breadth more but you can't beat Sean Connery as Bond, he was the complete package.  Connery had the feel of ruthlessness required for what is essentially an assassin.  Oliver Reed was almost Bond.

Moore came off as soft, but man he did have some moments where he lost his shit. Especially in The Spy Who Loved Me.

I still say Moore was the most consistent Bond. With seven films you would have though that he'd look as bored as Connery in the last couple but his charm and enthusiasm for the part never faltered even long after he had retired from the role. Even in AVTAK where he looked far too old his performance itself was fine.

I'll watch my personal favourite Moore film - Octopussy - this weekend.

Oliver Reeds candidacy for Bond was furthered by his starring in the Assassination Bureau with Diana Rigg.  I think he could've possibly been really good in the role, he could fluctuate with easy between dangerous and charming, he naturally (unlike Connery and Moore) has the right accent for it, which is to say Moore was RADA trained to speak like he did, Ollie was like that naturally, in fact his grandfather Beerbohm-Tree founded RADA, though Ollie did not attend.  Also it would've been interesting to have a slightly burlier Bond...and he would've been magic in action scenes.

Apparently he just scared the shit out of American producers with his unruly behaviour.  The Assasination Bureau was a comedy so he's playing it like that but he seems to me, having seen all his other performances from the day, to be a really good shout for the role.  Scarred face, whilst still being a handsome fella, sort of suits the idea of an assassin like Bond.

He left the set of the Channel 4 television discussion programme After Dark after arriving drunk and attempting to kiss feminist writer Kate Millett, uttering the phrase, "Give us a kiss, big tits".

in hindsight, i think brosnan wasn't a very great bond. it's telling when you like the video game character far more than the real life version

You're not wrong. GoldenEye 64 and Everything Or Nothing are more memorable than his films!

He's the Bond I grew up with so I'll always have a soft spot for him, but his films have aged terribly. GoldenEye is the lone exception. It's not his fault. The scripts didn't give him much to work with. The first half of Die Another Day remains a very big "what could have been" for both his portrayal and his tenure as a whole.

Spot on. I thought Brosnan was excellent but so much of it depends on the quality of the movies, if he'd had Casino Royale and Skyfall to follow on from Goldeneye, he'd be right up there with Moore/Connery imo. At least his likeness was used in the greatest Bond game of all time though, Goldeneye 64, absolutely loved that game.

GoldenEye 64 was my personal introduction to James Bond. I still play it to this day!
