James Bond

I always hear great things about them.

Sean Connery- Most cinematic Bond. Classic Bond

George Lazenby - Most physical. Tough Bond.

Roger Moore - Most charming yet deadly. Gentlemen Bond

Timothy Dalton - Pure Ian Fleming Bond. Romantic Bond.

Daniel Craig - Most psychologically tested Bond. Human Bond.

You forgot Pierce.

Chris1989 - the books were almost meant for the casual reader. They're easy to enjoy. All of them are short reads, at around 200 pages or sometimes less, so it doesn't take long to get through them. The longest is On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which is also probably the best book. I'd recommend either reading the books in order, or if you just want a few to give you a taste, then definitely go for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Casino Royale, and From Russia With Love. Thunderball and You Only Live Twice are up there too.

They could go back to the original books. There is a huge discrepency between some of the films and the novels. Moonraker (film) has absolutely nothing in common with Moonraker (novel) and to a lesser degree this is true of YOLT (Roald Dahl scrapping most of Fleming's material), DAF (Blofeld in drag!!), LALD, TMWTGG etc. Even the classic Connerys - which are semi-faithful - do some less than authentic things (adding the Fort Knox Oddjob fight and having Goldfinger sucked out of the de-pressurised window in Oddjob's stead).

Goldfinger is a good example of them changing the plot for the better. Fleming's plot had Goldfinger stealing the gold, which was considered a huge plot hole upon the novel's release. Of course, in the film this is changed to him radiating the gold to drive up his gold prices, which Bond acknowledges as a genius plan over attempting to steal it.

I agree though - that's why I said I'd be all for them adapting what hasn't been used yet, but I don't want them to re-use titles by any means. There's still lots of good in the novels that has yet to be used. Even some of the names, like Gala Brand in Moonraker, are something I would happily welcome in the films.

That is the odd one out, The Spy Who Loved Me. I actually quite like it, but, not as a Bond novel. Fleming should have just made it an independant thriller and left Bond out of it. But, Fleming disowned it, stopped it being published as a paperback and when he sold it to Eon he only sold the ''title''. He tried to erase it in effect. It is worth a read though but I definitely would recomend it last, out of the novels. It is his weakest book. But I still rather like it. It has some quite juvenile smut in it haha.

At this point it seems crazy to think about how they'll top the Craig era. He'll easily be the hardest to replace since Connery. But, maybe in ten years we'll be looking back at how Craig's Bond was "too serious" and how the next/then current Bond is better. No, probably not. Still, I doubt the series will ever truly end because it makes too much money. The most I could see is an extended hiatus.

That it does. Definitely something we don't need a proper adaption of since it has almost nothing to do with Bond. It's worth a read though for completeness sake, but it's also easily skipped.

What's the favorite Bond Girl and Bond Villain (and yes, you can include Never Say Never & Casino Royale (1960s))

Tracy for Bond girl, and I think Silva just edges out Telly's Blofeld for my favorite villain. He was terrific.

As a side note, Skyfall opened in China yesterday so we should expect some numbers by the end of this week and the weekend. It's now a certainty that it will finish in the top ten of all time unadjusted, but just where it will fall is all up to China.

Glad someone else likes Telly's Blofeld. He was excellent in OHMSS. Everything a Bond villain should be, his equal. I wasn't a fan of the other two official Blofelds. He's such a great actor. Javier Bardem is my favorite now.

Lazenby held himself pretty well with Telly.

I read that its subtitled, so the English dialogue retains the "cuts" but the subtitles have been altered. I think the only scene they cut right out is the clear shot of Patrice killing one of the guards in the Shanghai skyscraper. Other than that, any dialogue that they didn't approve of (like Severine being part of the Macau sex trade) they just altered in the subtitles. I think it was changed so that she was bought out by a mafia man or something like that.

I think Georgy and I have mostly kept it alive this long.

Next thing you know Skyfall will be on Blu-ray so we'll have that to discuss, and by spring or summer we should start getting some news about the next one. Plus in the mean time there's plenty of things to nitpick in the series.

In other words, we'll keep discussing and we'll catch the film thread... one day.

I cannot believe Connery is being trounced by Craig in the poll. I mean come on! Craig is probably a better actor than Sean but this is Sean Bloody Connery as Bond: the coolest actor-role match in cinematic history. He also had four 'great Bonds' (Dr No to Thunderball); Craig needs two more to merely catch up as QOS certainly does not count.
