The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Saw it again. Enjoy the film for what it is, I think it is one of the best. It is a tad bit long but the scene from the Blofeld reveal til the end went quicker than I remembered. Train fight scene is by far the best. I didn't care much about the plane scene. Would have been cooler if Bond was on skis. There was a sense of danger for Bond. Plane getting systematically demolished plus Hinx's badass double barreled Colt was putting huge holes in it.

Mexico City is honestly my favorite sequence in the film. Dat tracking shot.

I remember thinking it was gonna suck after they added it in the script at the last moment (due to budget issues), but I'm very, very happy they did now. Probably the highlight of the film for me, in all honesty, though the train scene comes close.

As much as the film is shit, David Arnold's gun barrel cue for DAD is phenomenal. I do hope he returns to the series at some point. I'm liking Thomas Newman but even he's been relying on David Arnold's arrangement of the Bond theme instead of giving us his own so I'm inclined to say EON hasn't forgotten about David Arnold despite Mendes preferring to use Newman for personal loyalty.

Arnold kind of depends on Barry doesn't he?

It's funny how over here we all seem to like Newman. On the Bond Subreddit they all act like he's the spawn of Satan

I also really like Arnold, too (felt like he was really hitting his stride on CR/QoS). Newman's score really matches the tone of the scenes and is also a great standalone soundtrack. Love, love, love the Mexico/Rome scores (particularly when Bond is with Monica Bellucci's character), as well as the instrumental to the theme...which I actually enjoy a lot, probably because it's minus the shitty, whiny lyrics

Newman is super talented and is really great at capturing the atmosphere of any given scene. I'd love Arnold back because he's actually my favourite Bond composer (as much as a lot of hardcore Barry nuts like to shit on him) but I'm happy with Newman. Plus, Newman means Mendes, so who can complain about that?

He's certainly very influenced by Barry and always adhered to the idea that the film's theme should provide the basic thematic material for the score, just as Barry did. However, I was talking strictly about the James Bond theme. Two films in and Newman hasn't give us his definitive version of it. So far, every Bond composer has done an arrangement of the Bond theme in their own voice. Newman has been using David Arnold's "The Name is Bond" arrangement from Casino Royale. It's a fantastic arrangement but still, I'd really like to hear Newman's take on the Bond theme.

I recall Newman saying in the music featurette from Skyfall that it was such a good rendition of the theme that he couldn't not license it from David Arnold. Fair point, but still, I don't even think we got the guitar riff from the Bond theme in SPECTRE at all. One of the best movie themes ever and I'm dying to hear a Thomas Newman spin on it.

One of my favourite arrangements is actually "Ice Chase" from TLD. Barry's last "new" arrangement of the Bond theme and it's killer. I love the sequenced drums in it. Surprisingly, it's aged very well.

That and "Exercise at Gibraltar" are my favorites. That entire soundtrack is incredible - if not for OHMSS I'd say it's the best out of the series.

I like everyone who has done multiple Bond movies. Barry, Arnold and Newman have all made some truly great performances. The one-and-doners haven't contributed so much (probably why they only have one...except George Martin).

I couldn't agree more. After a couple of weaker Barry scores midway through his Bond career he truly came out on top - Octopussy, AVTAK, and TLD are certainly up there with his best work. TLD is my personal favourite of the Barry scores with OHMSS as a close second. I do really love AVTAK and that screaming guitar though.

The only time David Arnold almost missed the mark was DAD - he got a little carried away with the electronics there, especially during the action scenes. Very reflective of the film itself. That said, there's enough good music elsewhere in the score that it never bothered me too much. The score is certainly better than the film.

Finally saw the movie last night. Maybe it's the aggressively lowered expectations after all of the shit the movie's been getting, but I absolutely loved it. A bit slow at points in the middle, but overall I really enjoyed it. I'd say it's my favorite of the Craig movies and absolutely shits all over anything with Brosnan. Call me crazy, but I really really liked this one.

It does seem to be getting a better reputation from word of mouth than the critics, that's for sure. You're not alone!

"But I made Casino Royale!"

My second-favorite of the four. I thought this one was better. Come at me bro.

Hey I once got into an argument with someone on reddit about their opinion being factually wrong...I'll take this there if need be!

Yeah, Barry's last three scores for Bond were the best he's done since OHMSS. AVTAK was very similar to OHMSS but with the guitar.

The Newman theme I liked was when Bond got in the DB5. Also in the main menu for Skyfall. I also liked how Newman incorporated local music into the score.

I think the worse score was by far Dr. No, except for the Monty Norman 007 theme. The rest of it sounds like some television show of the era. From Russia With Love was a HUGE improvement. I would go as a far as saying FRWL was the first true Bond film. DN introduced the theme, gunbarrel, Bond, villain and Bond girl, but FRWL introduced the formula that made these films work. This was then perfected by Goldfinger.

It's funny how poorly Dr. No has aged compared to From Russia With Love even though they were only a year apart. That said, I do enjoy Dr. No for what it is (and I'd still rank it above YOLT and DAF). The dinner scene with Dr. No is classic, and Connery is very energized in his performance. I will say that Bond ordering Quarrel to "fetch" his shoes though is perhaps a bit inappropriate considering the time period.
