The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

It's funny how poorly Dr. No has aged compared to From Russia With Love even though they were only a year apart. That said, I do enjoy Dr. No for what it is (and I'd still rank it above YOLT and DAF). The dinner scene with Dr. No is classic, and Connery is very energized in his performance. I will say that Bond ordering Quarrel to "fetch" his shoes though is perhaps a bit inappropriate considering the time period.

True, but then I watch Live and Let Die and I think...

Well I think they are both relics of their time

SPECTRE took some serious damage at the box office this past week according to BOM. We're now at $677 million worldwide ($153 million domestically) but it dropped significantly compared to the previous two weeks which were generally ahead of QOS and only marginally behind Skyfall. Even The Hunger Games didn't quite meet the expected grosses, so it seems that things are quieting down on the theatre front as the world waits for Star Wars.

Interestingly, the Tuesday show I went to last week was more packed than opening night. Granted, both were afternoon shows as opposed to peak evening times. The money it's making despite a lukewarm reception (and no Skyfall level promotion) is proof of how popular Craig is as Bond. He's enough of a draw so I'm certain we'll see him for at least one more once the new distributor is chosen.

I'm still predicting it'll finish at around $825 million worldwide - still a huge smash despite not quite reaching Skyfall heights.

I remember asking a few months or so before the movie came out whether or not it would match Skyfall at $1 billion. Everyone seemed so sure it would beat Skyfall at the box office. Whoops

With that being said there's nothing wrong with the numbers it's doing. I wonder when we'll hit "peak" box office numbers - i.e. both the number of movie goers and the gross both start doing down?

A very fine argument indeed. I'm still not sure how I will truly rank the Craig films aside from knowing that QOS is my least favourite.

It still amazes me that Quantum isn't more of a mess considering the troubled production due to the writer's strike. If I ranked all 24 films it'd probably fall somewhere in the middle - not a bad accomplishment for a film that barely had a functional script before Forster and Craig knocked it into shape.

Boy were we wrong. Here we were ready to camp outside to make sure we get a seat and the film sneaks right by.

It's hard to say. Until Star Wars comes out there really isn't a whole lot more direct competition it will face so the casual grosses should still hold up over the next couple of weeks despite the drop this past week. The fact that it still held number two with such minimal grosses shows that it was a slow week for movies in general. I can't remember offhand how many weeks Skyfall played and where it truly dipped (it probably shows on BOM) but we should expect something similar, just with smaller numbers.

If the film was just as good or better than Skyfall than it would have topped it. Skyfall was just better paced, edited and more memorable. Spectre is a flawed film but it hits the notes as Bond film.

I would rank Skyfall number 1 as a Craig film because it celebrates the series and it is more entertaining. Silva is by far the best villain in the Craig films, sorry Waltz fans, but audiences loved him. Especially his intro scene, that was beautifully done. Even his death scene got some laughs because he looked really pissed off that Bond killed him.

Casino Royale comes really close though, the story makes more sense than Skyfall and Spectre, but it got clunky in the second half after Le Chiffre's passing.

Quantum is by far the worse.

Spectre is in the top ten highest grossing Bond films of all time with inflation. Right now it is at a 7

1. Skyfall 2012 Daniel Craig $1,108,561,008

2. Thunderball 1965 Sean Connery $1,014,941,117

3. Goldfinger 1964 Sean Connery $912,257,512

4. Live and Let Die 1973 Roger Moore $825,110,761

5. You Only Live Twice 1967 Sean Connery $756,544,419

6. The Spy Who Loved Me 1977 Roger Moore $692,713,752

7. Spectre 2015 Daniel Craig $677,802,879

8. Casino Royale 2006 Daniel Craig $669,789,482

9. Moonraker 1979 Roger Moore $655,872,400

10. Diamonds Are Forever 1971 Sean Connery $648,514,469

11. Quantum of Solace 2008 Daniel Craig $622,246,378

21. Octopussy 1983 Roger Moore $426,244,352

22. The Living Daylights 1987 Timothy Dalton $381,088,866

23. A View to a Kill 1985 Roger Moore $321,172,633

Knocked Quantum out of its place.

Craig basically needs to make one more film to top Roger Moore. Granted Moore has done seven films, three of them in the top then.

I don't think he can top Connery, unless his next film is like really amazing. Or Bond finally gets a male lover. Maybe he can achieve it.

1.Sean Connery$4,349,294,553

2.Roger Moore$3,855,832,060

3.Daniel Craig$3,078,399,747

4.Pierce Brosnan$2,043,751,904

5.Timothy Dalton$666,246,057

6.George Lazenby$505,899,782

Poor George.

Aka why Goldeneye was perhaps the most important movie of the entire series.

Well the hiatus must have helped. After Spy they kept getting a film every two years. People got sick of them and they weren't warming up to Dalton. Brosnan was always the favorite since Steele.

I'd probably rank Quantum just outside of my top 10 still. It's the weakest Craig film, but I'll still take it before all but the absolute best entry from most of the other Bonds.

I've been of the opinion for the last two years or so that, on my ranking, Casino Royale and Skyfall are so close that I really couldn't pick one over the other. SPECTRE is currently my favorite, but I think after more time/viewings it'll soften to the same tie on my ranking with those 2.
