The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

I think of how many women Connery slapped around. That would never get by today.

 There's no way that would get by today. I remember an interview in Playboy that came out around the time of Thunderball and he mentions that it's ok to hit a woman as long as she provokes it...I'm pretty sure there's a clip on youtube where Barbra Walters calls him out on it like 20 years later.

Also I'm absolutely shocked LALD did that well...must've been the fact that there was a new Bond. I'm sure having the best song* in the series also helped....

* Until 33 years later ;)

Please don't tell me you like You Know My Name more than Live and Let Die?! I like YKMN, it's one of the best Bond songs in 25+ years...but LALD is a classic!

Jane Seymour was enough to sell a lot of tickets. She was stupid hot. It is one of the reasons I would watch the film because she was that freaking hot. It made a lot of people forget the plot which was weak.

I do like You Know My Name better than Live and Let Die. The latter is a classic but I didn't like it when it got fast.

Yes. And I like Skyfall better too. LALD currently sits 3rd on my Bond theme favorites list.

I would put Skyfall and YKMN in the tier below LALD, which sits alone at #1 for me.

Also, I agree a million % Georgy. Jane Seymour was hot as fuck at that time. One of, if not the hottest Bond girls ever.

Jane Seymour is still hot, even at 61.

My top themes are probably:

1. You Know My Name (provided the perfect theme for Craig's Bond)

2. The Living Daylights (cheese, but I love it - worked great as the theme in Barry's score)

3. Live and Let Die (first rock Bond theme and it kicks ass)

4. Skyfall (nice spin on the classic Bond theme formula and Adele nails it)

5. Diamonds Are Forever (my personal favorite of the three Bassey did)

Correct. There were multiple near deaths among the cast and crew during production of You Only Live Twice. Kind of ironic.

- Mie Hama threatening to kill herself if she was dropped from the film

- Aerial cameraman John Jordan getting clipped by a helicopter blade (losing his foot)

- Several crew members who had been location scouting opted to miss their flight to see a screening of a ninja training video - they learned that the flight crashed an hour later with no survivors

- A large light fixture fell right Karen Dor (Helga Brandt) had been standing on set moments before

I guess she couldn't take the shame. She was considered one of the most beautiful women in Japan at the time. Notice how large her eyes were. In Japan that is beauty.

I read in another post that Daniel Craig is visibly losing interest in the role. If he is losing interest, why sign on for two more?

I was thinking the same, I just didn't want to be the guy to say it

I doubt Craig is losing interest, he seems to enjoy playing Bond from everything I've seen. Also like you mentioned, he signed on for two more.

Thought so.

Watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service today. Many complain about the bad editing but I believe it was an attempt to create more thrilling action scenes and as it turns out, many action films use it today such as the Bourne films and Quantum of Solace. George Lazenby may be lacking in acting, but he was far more convincing in fighting and shooting guns than Connery. Connery held his gun like a six year old pretending he is a cowboy. Maybe props have improved by 1969 but Lazenby was trained for combat so he knows how to hold a gun. He can probably kick Connery's ass.

Lazenby is definitely one of the more physical Bonds. Him and Craig are probably the most physical, Lazenby maybe even more so. It's close though. Both guys look like they could kill you in one punch. Connery is still believable - he had the size, the build, and the demeanor, but I still think Lazenby or Craig would win against his Bond in a fight. Next in line would be Dalton, then Brosnan, then Moore.

I don't think the editing in the film is all that bad. Kind of schizophrenic at times but far less annoying than the awful editing in Quantum of Solace, for example.

Dalton was surprisingly tough considering he was a Shakespeare actor. I put him third. I'd put Brosnan behind Moore since his "AH!" makes him sound like a pussy. Moore's fights were poorly choreographed and he tends to fight dirty. Remember when he went psycho on one of the henchmen from The Man WIth the Golden Gun, slamming his head into the wall while the belly dancer screamed? Now that was brutal.

Connery was good at hitting women. Did his own stunts for that. The punches Lazenby threw looked like they hurt and he did most of his stunts. They wouldn't let him do the ski sequence even though he went skiing anyway.

My order

1. Lazenby

2. Craig

3. Dalton

4. Connery

5. Moore/Brosnan because some of Moore's fight scenes were rather weak.

I am glad the fight scenes of Skyfall don't seem too choreographed. That was the problem I had with Quantum of Solace, it looked like they trained for weeks. Bond fights are usually messy and look improvised.

I bought a special edition of a random magazine (I'm actually not sure what it is) on the 50 years of James Bond. It's a great read, has a lot of interesting numbers regarding the films and the character of Bond, which I'd be happy to post. (He's sleep with 57 women, won $121,267,000 in gambling, etc...although the numbers don't include Skyfall) It also has a behind-the-scenes look at Skyfall and interesting info on all the actors.

In regards to Craig and playing Bond, here's what they quote him as saying: "I'll keep playing Bond as long as the quality of the films remains high and as long as they want me to do them."

I got that same magazine. I like the part when they brought women up to Lazenby's room to prove his manhood. I do not agree with their ranking though.

It seems during the delay with production he was having second thoughts but now he seems to want to do it until he can't do it anymore. I think he has little patience.

I find it funny how so many people miss the fact that Vesper was playing Bond for throughout Casino Royale. It doesn't help that thanks to the shitty script for QoS they had to make a direct sequel where Bond is so fucking hung up on her.

Well, I hate to ruin your prediction, but he's contracted for two more so he'll do at least two. ;)

I have that same 50 Years of Bond magazine. Good read, fun facts, but you guys are right. The ranking is all over the place. I was really surprised Thunderball was number one and Quantum so far down the list. Sure, Quantum isn't the best but it's easily better than some of the films that were just ahead of it.

I believe Barbara Broccoli or Daniel Craig confirmed they will not be filmed back to back since that would complicate things. They want to release a film every two years.

Not sure how much money MGM put into The Hobbit but hopefully they can make a profit off the first film. Skyfall is close to $900 million and that will be a lot of profit for MGM.

They'd probably rank it in the top 5. No way they will move Goldfinger, Casino Royale and Thunderball. The Living Daylights is by far one of the best. The villains were weak and forgettable but the rest of it, from the opening scene, to Bond's journey with whats her name from like Austria all the way to Afghanistan was a lot of fun and even heart warming. Not to mention Bond's final duel with Necros. Man, Necros first scene was fucking incredible!

Holy shit, I just saw the DVD prices for Never Say Never Again. Glad I am passing on that!

The DVD prices for Never Say Never Again now are quite ridiculous on eBay and other places. It's out of print right now but still. I bought the Collector's Edition a few years ago when it was released. Won't upgrade it to Blu because a) it's not worth it for that movie and b) the prices.

And yes, Craig debunked the back to back filming rumor almost as soon as it was started. I think someone just twisted around John Logan's words. He's indeed writing the next two and said it might contain a linking story arc (ie. something like SPECTRE) but it won't be a two-part film.

What a deal! I'd pay a maximum of $10.

Logan has been quoted as saying Bond without Blofeld is like Batman without the Joker, or something to that effect. Apparently he's keen to bring Blofeld back, but realistically, Quantum seems more likely.

Curiously, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade said in a recent interview reflecting on the Bond films that they've written that they've set up a future villain and that hints can be found if you look at the names of the Craig villains so far. That would be Mr. White, Dominic Greene, and Silva. All the last names are colors. Goldfinger perhaps? I sincerely hope not. I want new villains. Finish off Mr. White if anything.
