The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Perhaps not, but it's still extra tickets sold and could allow Skyfall to beat Thunderball.

"The GoldenEye Overture" and "Run, Shoot, and Jump" are really the only tracks that I like from the score. I think the former is made better by the fact that the guys who scored the original game used some of the same sound effects and feel for the game's score, so it's a bit nostalgic too. Other than that, while some of his lush string cues are nice pieces of music, he takes all the excitement away from the scenes it accompanies. Let's not even mention the awful "Ladies First" cue and his original tank chase which thankfully got dropped from the film.

It's the opposite of Bill Conti's score. Granted, Conti's score is horrendously dated but he made some dull scenes in For Your Eyes Only pretty exciting with his music.

Some parts of the Overture, like the I don't know what it is, sounds like babies crying are terrible but it was a good piece. The score was getting too industrial so it was a relief to hear strings.

Listening to Thomas Newman's score for Skyfall on YouTube. I like it a lot.

Skyfall really pushed the PG13 limit

I think I know exactly what you mean with the babies crying. Good way of putting it.

Right when Ourumov shows up it does that and then again on the runway before the timpani starts playing the Bond theme melody.

I picked up the score for Skyfall shortly after I saw the film but only listened to bits and pieces. I finally listened to the whole thing the other day after seeing the film again. It's a great score. He handles the more techno driven bits better than Arnold had when he previously tried to incorporate that feel into his scores. His action themes are fun and I like how he reprises many of his action themes throughout. There's one motif that runs through the early Istanbul scenes that shows up a few times, as well as the bit where Bond drives the digger up to the train which shows up again when he fights Silva's goon underwater. A nice reprise that sounds almost triumphant.

I loved that eastern/western fusion for the Istanbul track. So far it is my favorite. I think Newman did a better job combining East/West than Barry and Arnold. No disrepect for Barry but for YOLO he can either go Western or Orient but never together. But Barry broke a lot of ground using electronic music. It is hard to make techno work with a classic score. Bond has always been hybrid.

Conti's score was funk oriented. It represented the times but it was nothing memorable like Marvin Hamslich's score for The Spy Who Loved Me.

Newman shows a lot of respect for Arnold and Barry for the score.

Does anyone know why Paul Haggis didn't return for Skyfall? Hard to beleive that Neil Pervis and Robert Wade wrote for every Bond film since The World Is Not Enough.

No idea why they chose Teri Hatcher over Monica Belucci for the role of Paris Carver. Monica was not only hotter but she was a better actress. Teri's poor chemistry with Brosnan cost her a lot of her lines cut which resulted in Paris' only use being the sacrificial lamb. Monica would have inspired the writers to write a better part for her character.

Agreed on the scores. I'd be all for Newman returning, but I'd welcome Arnold back for sure, who is probably the best alternative to Barry.

I'm not sure if Haggis was uninterested or if it was just because Mendes wanted to get John Logan on board for the final polish. Mendes, Logan, Purvis, and Wade were all complimentary of one another on how well they were able to get on while writing the script together.

Teri Hatcher wasn't helped by the dialogue, but yes, she's pretty bad. The "too close for comfort" exchange is one of the worst acted scenes in the Brosnan films, next only to Bond's confrontation ("Isn't that your motto?") in The World Is Not Enough.

Remember my prediction the other day that Skyfall would be at $965 million worldwide at this stage? It's at $974 million.

It is about to surpass Twilight's finale in the US box office. Good riddence. Bond > Rpatz. It will hit $1 billion within the next two weeks. It is holding its own in the US box office. Bond has beaten every single competition in the spy genre. Bourne has been gving the series a run for its money. You look at the percent drops each weekend and it is averaging like 30%. I guess some rather not see The Hobbit.

I would be fine with Arnold too but fuck Newman killed it. I would be more happy if that same writing team returned. Skyfall was tbe best script since Licence to Kill. In fact it is be best Bond film since Licence to Kill. After jepordizing my marriage and watching all the Bond films I can see that Licence to Kill was the cut off point. It was well written, acted, had a great villain. Sexy Bond girls in Talisa Soto and Cary Lowell. It is dated however. Casino Royale was great but that was Bond before he became THE 007 we are famliar with.

I think it was Marc Forster or Paul Haggis that since we are in the age of the internet we don't need to focus so much on locations, the only thing to explore was Bond. After 20 films they finally started exploring deep in Bond. Sure this was seen in OHMSS, some of Moore's films, Dalton probably had the most tormented Bond until Craig, but they can now paint a better portrait. If you think about it, Bond doesn't have many friends. Can totally see why he went psycho on all those who mutilated Felix and murdered his wife.

QoS portrays Bond as rational when fucked with. No matter how pissed off he is, Bond won't go guns blazing until the right moment. I am curious to see how the events of Skyfall will effect Bond in 24 but I think he will be more comfortable in the role. Craig seemed to be comfortable right off the bat.

No idea why so many people rank Brosnan high. George Lazenby puts it well. If he walked into a casino in a tux, no one would notice him. Lazenby would know because he got the role based on his imposing figure.

Piers Morgan made a point that most of the criticism about Roger Moore comes from Moore himself. So he was known as a weak Bond but in fact he did seven films, and made almost $3 billion. Only Connery has him beat mostly because of Thunderball. He was a highly successful Bond. None of Brosnans films could touch Thunderball, Goldfinger, YOLO, SWLM, Moonraker and Live and Let Die.

I wonder if the next film will be over the top like Thunderball, Moonraker and Die Another Day? It seems every fourth film they go big. Connery had the honor of having an even more over the top with YOLT. i can see the next one being too over the top and the 5th would be more basic spy shit like OHMSS, For Your Eyes Only and The Living Daylights

Anyone agree with the assment that Skyfall was The World is Not Enough done right? The story is remarkably similar.

Got the Bond 50 boxset for Christmas. Just watching From Russia With Love right now, these HD transfers are superb!

Damn, someone must have liked you. If I ever do get the films on blu ray it will be one at a time when the prices drop.

I bet the title sequences are amazing.

From my parents ;) And yes, everything looks amazing. It's so clear, one of the best HD transfers I've seen of an older movie. Can't wait to watch through the whole series again!

OHMSS looks outstanding on Blu. Well, the whole collection does. Dr. No which is probably the most dated film looks like it was shot yesterday. They also fixed some previous problems, like GoldenEye's bad cropping and dark coloring which looked awful on the 2006 DVD release.

Ratios for the title sequences were also corrected (some of the title sequences in the early films appear to be "framed" - this is correct and how they would have looked). When Lowry restored the films for the Ultimate Editions starting with Region 2 back in 2006, they literally fixed everything. They actually removed the shot of red blood in the water from Thunderball and recolored it clear because they thought the film was damaged, not realizing it was intentional and part of the film. Some of these problems were rectified for the Region 1 DVDs for Christmas 2006, but for the Blu-ray set they went over everything again and corrected even more problems.
