The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

I don't care about how much the actor resembles the former Bonds or Fleming's vision. As far as I'm concerned, Bond is a codename that's assigned to each new 007 Agent. Explains everything rather nicely.

Sure, keep coming up with your own storylines and living in your own fantasy world...

All the films from Dr. No to Die Another Day are in the same "universe" and Bond is the same character throughout. Sure he occasionally changes his physical appearance and does not age, but that's just like how comic books can run for decades and some artists draw the hero differently and the hero never ages.

The story only reboots at Casino Royale which creates a separate "universe".

It's a widely accepted fan theory, hardly something I came up with myself. And are you really going to tell me that the way I interpret a fictional universe is in any way more of a "fantasy" than the way you do? Get off your high horse.

Relax I was joking :tongue2: I hadn't ever heard of that code name concept before but sounds pretty cool.

Good read. Thanks. I think there may be a hole in this though. In Die Another Day, Bond makes a remark about the jet pack from Thunderball as if he can recall using it, if my memory serves me right. Thus Pierce Brosnan would remember what he did "as" Sean Connery 40 years ago.

Not sure if serious.

I think it is obvious the Bond films have no continuity. Like any past they had is probably similar but not quite exact. Quantum of Solace is the first and only Bond film to have such continuity. There have been references throughout, like Tracy was only ever referenced twice in For Your Eyes Only and License to Kill and possibly a third time in Goldeneye. But for the most part they act like none of that ever happened.

I just look at each film as a standalone adventure. I never really figured the need to imagine the codename theory or however else you want to look at it. Each actor has played the role differently, but at the end of the day it's still the same character to me. Some things here and there linking the films, but once they got past the first five Connery films I think it became obvious that continuity would be impossible.

From Russia With Love was a direct sequel of sorts to Dr. No (Bond has the same girlfriend, Kronsteen mentions that Bond humiliated SPECTRE by killing Dr. No, and so on) but even Goldfinger had nothing to do with SPECTRE or the story that they had been starting. Part of that was probably because of the new director (Guy Hamilton), but then the success of Goldfinger led them to keep in the direction of standalone adventures. SPECTRE still went on from Thunderball, but it never quite referenced the first two films again.

I think Skyfall will be like a Goldfinger for Craig. Nothing to do with the previous two films, just a great Bond adventure. Connery and Moore both had great third films, and The World is Not Enough is my favorite Brosnan film, so I hope Skyfall continues the pattern of three being a lucky number for 007.

I noticed how the fourth films are usually the over the top ones. Though Thunderball is by far the best of the the fourth films, Moonraker and Die Another Day sucked hard. Then by the 5th film they toned down the camp. OHMSS was meant to be a Sean Connery film but he opted out. Too bad he couldn't stay out because he had that "I'm getting too old for this shit" look on his face throughout Diamonds are Forever.

Probably the hair. It's funny thinking that people ripped on Daniel Craig's hair yet Connery wore a toupee in every Bond film. In Diamonds he had put on a few pounds. Even though Roger is older I think Roger looked younger in Live and Let Die than Connery did in Diamonds.

Jill St. John is hot but she was quite the bimbo in Diamonds.

Roger has good genes. He was the oldest actor to played Bond, he was 45 when he did Live and Let Die, even older than Connery at Diamonds. I think Connery looked younger than him at Never Say Never Again than Moore at Octopussy. Sometime in the 70's Connery stopped aging.

I love Moonraker...just because it's so over the top. "Filmed on location...IN OUTER SPACE"

Yeah same!

They could never get away with making that now!

Crazy fun, perhaps for the wrong reasons, but it entertains me.

maybe i am being a complete novice here but can someone explain to me why connery did 6 films then came back 11 years later and did one more? Even though moore was bond at the time. Thanks

Because that Connery comeback film, Never Say Never Again, is "unofficial". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Never_Say_Never_Again#Production

That's why the 007 theme song is not featured in this film.

So all the Bond Blu Rays are all out, but they're not selling all the single discs that MGM didn't bother to put out?

I'll prob. get it when Skyfall comes out and hopefully the price of the box is knocked down by then. It's still a really good price for the box set.

Ryan95- Comes down to one of the original James Bond screenplay writers not getting credit and a plagiarism lawsuit over "Thunderball" which he won, and rewrote as "Never Say Never Again". I think Connery was bitter with the people who ran the Bond franchise, and you never see him doing anything to promote the James Bond reissues. I think Moore, Dalton, and Brosnan have done things to promote it and Connery never has. I'm pretty sure Roger Moore did commentaries.

Everything is available as single disc blu now no? :drevil:

Correct. Some have been coming out as Wal-Mart or Best Buy exclusives but only temporarily. By Christmas they should all be readily available individually. Amazon has a bunch of them listed already.

The box set is still the best deal (less than $7 a film) whereas the individuals are going for $17 right now.

I decided to rank the James Bond in fighting skills.

1. George Lazenby- His performance may have been wooden but he kicked ass in his one night only as 007. The reason would be that he was a fight instructor for the British SAS. He was so good that Bruce Lee wanted to work with him, but he died before they made a movie. He was also the most convincing at handling weapons.

2. Daniel Craig- Fucking brutal.

3. Sean Connery- His fight scene with Red Grant is one of the best in Bond history

4. Timothy Dalton- Looks like a professional killer

5. Pierce Brosnan- Moans like a beaten dog.

6. Roger Moore- Had his moments.
