Controversial posters advertising Guns N' Roses' upcoming Las Vegas residency have been taken down after campaigners said they glamorized rape.

Axl Rose's band is performing a series of shows at the Hard Rock Hotel in Sin City until the end of the month, and the concerts have been advertised with an image of a woman who appears to have been sexually assaulted under the city's famous "Welcome" sign. The picture appeared on posters, billboards and in newspapers, sparking outrage among anti-sexual abuse campaigners.

Hannah Brook, executive director of The Rape Crisis Center, tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "This type of advertising is simply unacceptable. Not only for just the victims and the message of violence it brings, but also for the community in general. This is not the type of message we want to portray to tourists that are coming to our city. We want them to know it's a safe place to come, and by putting a message out there with Las Vegas above it is concerning."

Bosses at the Hard Rock Hotel have now issued an apology and modified all of the advertisements. A statement from the company reads, "Hard Rock Hotel & Casino regrets that the Guns N' Roses advertising for their current shows has offended any member of the community. The resort has decided to further modify the art and began the process of changing the materials (on Friday)." The band's shows kicked off at the Hard Rock Hotel on Halloween.

This can only happen in the US....

to be fair, there's a reason that image was banned as the original cover art.

if these ads were placed in areas where kids could see them, then i can understand taking them down. but i think most adults - especially people who were alive when the record came out - would recognize it as a nostalgia thing, a reference to the old album cover, rather than something designed to deliberately offend (though that may have been the case in 1987!).

They should never have ruined the Appetite artwork to start with. It's a disgrace that this was used to promote Axl and his current employees, not to mention how horrible they made it with all the Vegas stuff in the picture.

Not saying you're wrong or anything, but Australia is pretty far from Europe.

I agree with SS. Why not show the friendly Chinese Democracy bicycle? It is fun for the entire family.

All of this +1

To be fair, this is art. To be more fair, it's been a quarter of a f*&!$n century since it was first put out (and pulled).

Fascism.

It's art, but it's being used to sell a product, and being shown in public places.

I'm all for artistic freedom, but I see film as art too, and there are plenty of films I wouldn't advise to be shown in public areas. This is hardly fascism.

But as HRS pointed out, this is just getting them more publicity, so...

I meant to quote the post saying "only in America does stuff like this happen".
