What do you think of private prisons? Are they shameful or just a sign of the times? It is pretty comical that prisons are now a potential business opportunity.

I'd say it's more comical that healthcare is regarded as such. I'd say it's both though.

If you want to understand why marijuana is still considered a class one narcotic, you only need to look at the private prison system. Private prisons need customers, drug laws in the U.S. keep them coming.

Big Pharma and healthcare are even more absurd.

Capitalism.

Capitalism needs checks and balances in place to protect us from our inherent greed.

Also: crack cocaine versus regular cocaine. Check out Michigan's narcotic laws.

Attention World:

"Loose" means something is not tight, for example "My shoelace is loose."

"Lose" means to misplace or to not win. Examples include, "Keep your keys in your pocket so you don't lose them," and, "The Yankees are going to lose tonight and every day this week for sure because they suck."

Thank you.

Assuming that there was real competition (which I doubt), it would save money. The main aim of private firms is to get the maximum benefit, so they would control every cost and would try to innovate and be efficent to meet the budget and, consequently, make money. Moreover, it could be a solution to the overcrowding. And, finally, I think it could be a good idea because it would imply a change in the way things have always been done. I mean, traditional prisons are far from perfect. They are often criticized because they don't work as good as they should, so we could give a try to a new standard.

I'm conscious that implementing this new "system" should be done with a lot of carefulness, cos the rights of the prisoners and the victims are at stake, so there should be a good State inspection and control.

I think it should be just used as a complement of the current system, for example for small crimes.
