Re-Creating the Greatest Hits Album

Gun N' Roses

Recommended Posts

So I have seen a lot of discussion lately on here about the song choices on GnR's "Greatest Hits" album. Especially with the fact that Ain't it Fun and Since I Don't Have You are on it. Also, that five of the songs are covers.

If you were put in charge of creating the Greatest Hits album, what would you include on it.

Here's the CURRENT Greatest Hits set-list:

1.) Welcome to the Jungle

2.) Sweet Child O' Mine

3.) Patience

4.) Paradise City

5.) Knockin' on Heaven's Doors

6.) Civil War

7.) You Could Be Mine

8.) Don't Cry (Original)

9.) November Rain

10.) Live and Let Die

11.) Yesterdays

12.) Ain't it Fun

13.) Since I Don't Have You

14.) Sympathy for the Devil

*RULES*

- You can pick 12-16 songs

- Base it off of what you like. We all have different opinions and nobody should be criticized.

- In cases such as Don't Cry, you can use the alternative lyric version... even demos or live versions of songs if you'd like.

I have a latent distaste for Greatest hits albums, so predictably I'm not going to play by the rules, no reason there couldn't be a "deep cuts" G.H. album, including "sailing", it's alright, only women bleed, dead flowers, perfect crime, DITW,Bad Time-BC,Sail Away Queen,YATF, DTJ, throw in BOB...Coma, would love to hear some Elton,Floyd and Queen "spread ur wings", and some Nazareth,Imagine,OIAM electrified,MTTC, DOTF, some Doors WTMO, ...maybe an ELO for good measure, and a pitcher of strawberry margaritas to go ;)

Doing it somewhat chronologically with a few 'staples', and still trying to have a decent flow to it,

1) Welcome To The Jungle

2) You're Crazy [Lies]

3) Nightrain

4) Paradise City

5) Civil War

6) Knockin' On Heavins Door

7) Yesterdays

8) Locomotive

9) Don't Damn Me

10) Estranged

11) Better

12) November Rain

13) There Was A Time

14) Coma

15) Catcher In The Rye

16) Prostitute

I kinda wanna do a live era one too but it's kinda late, I'm kinda stoned and this literally took me about 20 minutes to write....

I have to say, the current Greatest Hits tracklisting is a complete and utter joke. Any newcomer to GNR's music would take one look at the tracklisting and think GNR are a cover band. Five fucking cover versions on a 14 track album is a disgrace - whoever picked out the tracklisting should be hung up by the balls and bled to death.

I know they included most of the single releases, but It's So Easy, Nightrain, The Garden and Estranged were all singles and not included and were a) original GNR songs and b) far more popular songs than the covers included (with the exception of KOHD which has become a bit of a GNR staple).

The only covers that should've been included are KOHD and SIDHY (and only because TSI needs to be represented in some form).

I think GNR should re-release the Greatest Hits and this should be the tracklist:

1. Welcome To The Jungle

2. Sweet Child O Mine

3. Paradise City

4. Nightrain

5. It's So Easy

6. Patience

7. Civil War

8. Don't Cry

9. November Rain

10 You Could Be Mine

11. Knocking On Heavens Door

12. The Garden

13. Estranged

14. Since I Don't Have You

15. Chinese Democracy

16. Better

17. Oh My God (re-recorded version as a bonus track for the fans)

14.) Sympathy for the Devil

Well the obvious ommissions here are, Mr Brownstone, It's So Easy and Nightrain. So add those three to the above, or, if there isn't room, then remove SFTD and TSI songs.

I think Sympathy For the Devil should still remain included...just so it's easy for people to get hold of without wanting to hunt for the old CD single.

It's on the OST, but I see your point.

an Essential Gn'R album needs more than 3 songs from AFD. Probably 5, the difficulty is Mr Brownstone v Rocket Queen I guess. Rocket Queen wins that for me. 1 from Lies, 1 from TSI - probably Down on the Farm or Ain't it Fun (I'll go with the latter as it is better known), 3/4 from both Illusion albums and 2 from CD.

hence,

1. Welcome to the Jungle (AFD)

2. Paradise City (AFD)

3. Nightrain (AFD)

4. Yesterdays (UYI 2)

5. You Could Be Mine (UYI 2)

6. Sweet Child O' Mine (AFD)

7. Don't Cry (UYI 1)

8. November Rain (UYI 1)

9. Estranged (UYI 2)

10. Patience (Lies)

11. Better (CD)

12. Ain't it Fun (TSI)

13. Rocket Queen (AFD)

14. Dead Horse (UYI 1)

15. There Was A Time (CD)

16. Civil War (UYI 2)

the only issue for me is 15. wasn't a single and 6-7-8-9-10 is a slow middle and could be mixed up. But rough that is a better intro to GN'R than the current Greatest Hits imo. May be a tad long for CD too...

Crikey, I hate having to do this, but if I'm only allowed 16 tracks, here goes.

1. Welcome To The Jungle

2. Sweet Child Of Mine

3. Paradise City

4. Night Train

5. Rocket Queen (Live Era version)

6. Mr. Brownstone

7. Patience

8. Move To The City

9. November Rain

10. You Could Be Mine

11. Civil War

12. Don't Cry

13. Estranged (Live Era version)

14. Yesterdays

15. Coma

16. Knockin' On Heavens Door

Bonus track: A live version of Live And Let Die from the UYI tour.

For me, this is the ultimate GNR 'Greatest Hits' and far better than the version available.

Pretty much what Bacardi said with the exception of better.

Honestly none of the masses really care at all about a black sheep song, from a black sheep album, from a black sheep version of the "band" that made no impact whatsoever and made a connection to very few people.

Not trying to hate, as better is one of maybe 3-4 songs off cd that I actually enjoyed.
