Vinyl LP and Turntable Discussion

Yeah, that's a bummer. I had something like that happen with a rare pressing of In Utero once. Probably the biggest hassle I've had with. Discogs to date. Had to get PayPal involved to force a refund.

I'll give it a week or two, and if it's still not resolved, I'll just cancel the order and demand a refund. Such a massive pain.

Got my sealed copy of Yes Progeny Highlights From Seventy Two 3 LP set today........

The 7 complete 1972 Yes concerts 14CD box set was fantastic as producer Brian Kehew claims to have used almost no compression. These tapes were also what were used to create the YesSongs live 3LP set back in the early 70's but the Dolby units were misaligned during the recording which is the reason that album is so muddy sounding. Kehew was able to individually calibrate the Dolby playback for each tape clarifying the sound and I have to say the result is stunning. The Progeny CD's blow away YesSongs as the music is now crystal clear. I am really looking forward to this vinyl as I wore our several copies of YesSongs back in the day.

Finally got around to picking up the Amy Winehouse boxed set. I traded my Frank, Back To Black and Lioness LPs toward it since I'd just be getting them back in the set anyway. I really wanted the live and rarities albums, so it ended up being worth it for me.

I'm really excited to finally get to spin some of it tomorrow night.

So I know vinyl audiophiles can be a little obsessive but now that I have my turntable back in action I started thinking about setting up the cartridge to make sure it is tracking properly.

Here is a good read on setup

http://www.needledoctor.com/Phono-Cartridge-Setup

Did lot of research online and in addition to using a alignment tool to align the cartridge found this test record to be recommended so bought one today

http://www.needledoctor.com/Hi-Fi-News-Test-Record

Also was looking for a good stylus cleaning tool and found a lot of fellow vinyl geeks on the forums recommending using a Magic Eraser you can buy in any U.S. grocery store for a couple of bucks. Here is a good explanation how it works

http://www.high-endaudio.com/Magic.html

Anyone else here have good tips on setup and stylus cleaning they care to share?

I've never used the test records for setup but I hear really good things.

I bought this:

http://www.amazon.com/Turntable-Cartridge-Stylus-Alignment-Protractor/dp/B005KR15HU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453768158&sr=8-1&keywords=shure+stylus+tool

And this:

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SFG-2-Stylus-Tracking-Force/dp/B00006I5SD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453768208&sr=8-1&keywords=stylus+weight

I grabbed them around 4 years ago and they've both been really helpful whenever I've swapped to a new cartridge.

I cannot say enough good things about the Magic Eraser thing. I read that years ago, tried it out and I've been happy ever since. All you have to do is set it under the tone arm, barely touch the stylus down and you're good to go.

Yessir. I've got the VPI 16.5 and I love it. I save a lot of money on used records just because I can buy things in a lesser condition and really bring them back to life with it.

Nice unit and it is under $1K so might be able to get that past the wife come bonus time............

I have been researching record cleaners and it is fascinating to read the completely different opinions vinyl geeks have on the subject regarding what is good and what is bad..........

Yeah, it's crazy. If you ask 10 people on the internet about cleaning records, you will get 10 WILDLY different answers. Each one of them will tell you all the others are dead wrong too lol.

I've had that VPI for a couple of years and it really does the trick for me. I run every record I buy through it before playing including brand new ones. It really comes in handy with bargain records though for sure. I've grabbed a LOT of old catalog LPs out of $0.25 - $1.00 bins and brought them back to life, so it's worked out really well for me.

Got a Rhino 180gram Black Sabbath Vol. 4 today....... my favorite Sabbath album....I have a first U.S. pressing so interested to compare the two

I got whatever the last repress was of Vol. 4 a couple months back, sounds great. That Crowes/Page LP sounds absolutely awesome BTW.

Finally grabbed a copy of The Cults "Pure Cult" 4LP box set off of Discogs......2LP's are a greatest hits and the other 2LP's are the complete 1991 Marquee Club live show. I have had this on CD since it first came out in the mid 90's but finally sprung for the vinyl.  Item is inbound so should have it for this coming weekend............

Is it just me, or do sellers on Discogs really overcharge for shipping? I just ordered a CD single from the Netherlands, and it was 7 Euros for shipping?!

I hear you RM but from what I have heard  I think the post office rates  in Europe are much more expensive than the USPS.............would be interesting to hear from our European brothers on this topic............

I recently bought a shitload of vinyls for a fair price. The best of that load was Aerosmith's "Draw the line", The Doors "Morrison Hotel" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours".
I know that "Draw the line" isn't regarded as a great record but I think it's one of Aerosmith's best. The story of that record enhances the listening-experience though.

Could be. It seems like any European seller charges anywhere from 5 - 9 Euros for shipping. If I'm paying twice the amount of the actual disc in shipping charges, something is wrong, though.
