"civil war" quote source identified

For the first time someone has identified the source of the "Peruvian Guerilla General" quote from UIY2's "Civil War." It turns out Axl is directly quoting from a leader in the Shining Path group, who told the Chicago Tribune in 1989 that his group was "annihilating mayors and government officials, for example, to create a vacuum."

Old news... as far as I remember

  • It quotes a Peruvian militant general's speech ("We practice selective annihilation of mayors and government officials, for example, to create a vacuum, then we fill that vacuum. As popular war advances, peace is closer").
  • "Civil War" is the B-side track to the June 1991 release of Guns N' Roses "You Could Be Mine" single, the promotional single for Terminator 2: Judgment Day. "Civil War" was not featured in the film however.
  • Of all the 30 combined tracks on the Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, "Civil War" (Track #1 on Use Your Illusion II) is the sole track to be recorded featuring original Guns N' Roses drummer, Steven Adler, who was fired shortly after the track's recording in 1990. Adler was replaced by then The Cult drummer, Matt Sorum, the drummer for all other 29 tracks on the two-disc set.

Really interesting stuff. Here's the actual article, the quote is basically word for word (with a couple of words cut out). Article is from the Chicago Tribune, dated July 9, 1989.

LIMA, PERU The young guerrilla officer who gave his name as Jorge chose his words carefully as he tried to explain the strategy behind ``selective

annihilation.``

``All popular war is violent,`` he said softly. ``We use selective annihilation of mayors and government officials, for example, to destroy the presence of the state and create a vacuum. Then we fill that vacuum.``

He sat back and let that sink in. ``Violence is an integral part of armed struggle,`` he said. ``As the popular war advances, peace gets closer. Only more popular war will bring peace.`` - See more at: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1989-07-09/news/8902150889_1_abimael-guzman-shining-path-guerrillas#sthash.EasaZuw7.dpuf

Slash cleaned up for Guns' first serious stab at the albums: a residential preproduction session in June 1989 that saw the band and crew relocate to Chicago.

Shining Path or "Sendero Luminoso" is a terrorist organization. Poor choice honestly.

it depends on how you define terrorism, and on if you shared the opinion of the government labeling them terrorists i mean the fucking us government are terrorists with all their war and lies and basically Just gaining oil.. I think some terrorist groups could be good if they fight for an ideal that is fair Edited by GNRmello77

One person's fight for good is another person's terrorism. It's all subjective.

True.

According to the real history of this country, Sendero Luminoso and Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru can be both sides of the table depending on who you ask and what books you read. Let's not forget how Fujimori's government annihilated hundreds of innocent people to "resolve" the issue -- including professionals, mothers and children.

What is a poor choice? He's basically mocking the insanity of the statement by quoting it in the song.

How do you know he's mocking it? Please share your source.

The source is the anti-war lyrics of the Guns n' Roses song "Civil War":

And why would them be aimed at terrorists instead of governments?

Personally, I think Axl read that article and couldn't believe what he was reading. This guy is saying, basically, that he's part of a terrorist organization that murders mayors and government officials so they can replace them with their own people. Using "selective annihilation" for peace". On the surface, this is insane. Now I suppose you could argue that some "terrorist" groups are justified based on the actions of the government, just like some governments are justified depending on what the other side is doing.

It's a very interesting and provocative line, which is why Axl quoted it, and was (IMO) mocking it.

I'm not sure why you think Axl did that (feel free to share it), but I think he was basically saying that both sides are to blame in a "civil war", and war is by its very nature, insane. Even the name itself (what's so civil about war, anyway?). You can't trust either side's motivation because they both think they're justified, you can only trust yourself:

You can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
When everybody's fightin'
For their promised land
