luciusfunk
Funeral > Reflecktor > Suburbs > Neon Bible Reflecktor is absolutely fantastic, but Funeral is a friggin' masterpiece. Neon Bible is a million times better than Suburbs. Their self-titled EP is better than Suburbs!
LightningBolt
Hmm. I had listened to one of Arcade Fire's albums a couple of years ago (can't remember which of the first two) and I didn't get the love. Decided to give Funeral a listen now because of this thread and I'm liking them a lot better than I did before. Most of the Neighborhood songs were good. That song in between was pretty weak and "Crown of Love" was straight dreadful, though. "Wake Up" just came on and it's cool.I'll give the new album a listen whenever it gets put on Spotify. All the leaks I'm finding have the opening track split in two.

It's funny but I think you often need to hear music at a particular time. At certain times in your life you can relate to some things better than you can at other times. Whether its because of life experience, exposure to other kinds of music or just a state of mind, you can definitely hear the same thing completely differently given the space of a few years or even just a few months. I've had this on several occasions and have it with books too. As a result if I don't initially like something (especially if its critically acclaimed) I put it aside with the intention of checking it out again at another time.

I loved Donnie Darko when I was a teenager, but I know if I watched it now I'd get put off by all the teen angst stuff and how the whole universe (literally) revolves around him. I read Catcher in the Rye about 5 times from when I was 10 until I was 14. I picked it up again a year or so ago, not expecting to love it like I used to, but there was a bit towards the end of the book that I'd never noticed before that really hit me.CD really resonated with me from 2010-2012 especially, and even from when the album came out I felt like I was in the same mindset as Axl (pretty worrying, looking back...). I loved Recovery when it came out, but I just don't have the time to listen to woe-is-me ballads any more (also why I quite liked the fact that the new NIN album wasn't so miserable, even though I used to listen to certain songs on repeat).Back on topic, loving this album. I'm not a huge Arcade Fire fan, but I was impressed when I saw them at EXIT in 2011. Hoping to get tickets to one of the Roundhouse shows here in London on the 11th and 12th. I've had that a few times too, certain things go over your head and years later you revisit it through different eyes. Anyone who has any criticism of Arcade Fire needs to put it aside and revisit it again at a later point in time IMO. They're a great, honest band and at the end of the day you can't argue with honesty.
luciusfunk
Well, Here Comes the Night Time was decent. I think I'll stick to Funeral and Neon Bible.

magisme
How good is this compared to Funeral? If Funeral is a 9/10, this is an 8.5/10. Very different albums though, so it's hard to compare.

Very different albums though, so it's hard to compare.Totally agree! I was just about to post that the two really can't be compared because they are so different. Depending on what mood I'm in there will be times when I will be playing Funeral thinking its the best they've ever done and times when I'll play Reflektor and think its the best they've ever done. My favourite tracks so far are: Reflektor, Porno, Awful Sound, Afterlife, We Exist, You Already Know and Joan of Arc. Some of the lyrics describe in eery detail some of the stuff I've gone through over the last 2 years. It's kind of like a full circle journey and makes me wanna get up and dance and just be happy about my life right now. I really love the lyric in Normal Person:"When they get excited they try to hide itLook at those normals go!"
Jakey Styley
I didn't feel the album as much as I wanted to. Will have to listen more at a different time.Normal Person is the only song I really remembered.

Redhead74
Porno is hands down the best song I've heard this year for me.
LightningBolt
Finally got around to listening to this. I like the sound a lot, but I can't help but feel quite a few of these songs are a bit longer than they should have been. Not too many albums above the 60 minute mark that I can consistently come back to. Not sure how often I'll be coming back to this. I do like the sound, though. I also like the subtle "textures" they add to most of the songs here that really do add a lot. Overall, I think the first half is better. Gets into a bit of a slump at the beginning of the second half with "Here Comes the Night Time II" and "It's Never Over (Orpheus)" being pretty bad. Also not sure I really get the "Porno" love. Redhead74
Saw the show last night and it was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! What a great live act! Their music translates beautifully to live performance and they are incredibly dynamic onstage. They have so many anthemic tunes that each and every song was just more awesome than the last it seemed. The audience was great and judging by the response and how everyone sang along to every song, they all appeared to be die hard fans. A highlight for us Aussies was their cover of the Inxs song 'The Devil Inside' and the segue into 'Here Comes The Night Time' was just brilliant. Loved it!!!! They're a cheeky bunch too. Their opening song started off as 'Rebellion' and everyone kind of confusedly cheered, and then after about 30 seconds they stopped and said they were just joking and launched into Normal Person. Rebellion thankfully came after Normal Person because its such a fucking awesome song, but obviously on the Reflektor tour we were all expecting an opener from Reflektor. And they were wearing those massive heads too! Love those guys! Would love to see them many times again!
