Really would like some feedback, please

Recommended Posts

Hey so, I've been playing with this guy I met in college. He really is into weird garage-y indy music. Some of his songs are quite interesting... but I am very much a blues- rock, rock n' roll kind of guy, so our styles don't really come together in my opinion.

This is a demo we did over the past few weeks. The song was pretty much his since he brought it to the table, so I haven't really complained much on parts I don't like. Not too sure about his singing though (his voice has potential but his melodies and words are weird). And I think he suffers from Axl- syndrome. He copies and pastes parts everywhere, cuts up solos and re splices them in other places, and adds lots of effects and such.

Anyways, a lot of the leads are mine as well as a lot of the rhythm... I kind of like one solo I did towards the end where the drums drop out and then kick back in. Its sloppy, but idk... I dig it.

Not sure if I am too enthusiastic about it though, I guess I should bring initial song ideas to the table next time and see if I like it better.

I dig the song. My opinion is perhaps he should focus on being cleaner with the vocals. There are a lot of places that he is kind of swooping up to a note and missing it (flat) or he's falling off of notes, not in a cool way. If he can clean it up and cut the vocal embellishment at the end of most phrases, it would be pretty cool. Just my opinion.

Not bad man, what program did you guys use? The mix is great, the singer is pretty good and you guys lay down some nice guitar, my only complaint would be the programmed drums sound too obviously like programmed drums during the chorus, or what I think is the chorus. Play around with the attack speed on the crash cymbal hits to make it sound more natural.

You go to Michigan State right? If you're looking for musicians to work with I'd highly recommend checking out Mac's, The Avenue, or the Mystery Garage sometime. Lansing has a surprisingly diverse and thriving local music scene, lots of great metal, punk, rock, blues, and folk artists around here and theres almost always a good show or two to see every week. If you're more into a heavier blusier sound I would HIGHLY recommend checking out The Jackpine Snag, definitely one of the coolest bands in town and a personal favorite of mine.

I'm into a lot of garage-y stuff myself, and I like it. I agree with some of the other comments, but the fact alone that I was willing to listen to it twice and still have it playing in my head means that the flaws are minor. For the most part, the guy's voice is OK - it has its strengths and weaknesses. Some nice catchy hooks with the guitar. Good stuff.

Thanks guys! The dude I am working with is really into the Strokes so I am not surprised it is similar to that. I am into the more bluesy rock n' roll kinda thing but its cool to write something different. I really appreciate the feedback and will show you guys other stuff we do whenever that is

Yeah man! I am still in Lansing, are you? I have never been to Mac's but my gf has. I will check those dudes out, I am always down to hear some cool music and lay back. Do you have a band or anything going around here, still?
