One of the best Guns songs ever, why was it trashed by fans? What didn't they like? Why has it aged so well? Has it gained a new respect amongst the fans of Chinese?

I've read when it was released, a lot of people didn't even realise a new GNR song was out and released on a film.

I get that it was a hugely different style and sound to what fans had came to love but was it literally a case of, not having more of the same thing and because of that, deliberately not being open to it?

I went to the cinema to hear it. As far as i can remember everything got trashed in the old message board, it was the infancy of trolling. I liked it especially the disco beat and the outro. Like it more now than then and it should have been on CD in place of the IFW.

Interesting.

In regards to Axl visiting, could it be - the song was liked by a fair amount of fans but the 'louder' one's that were naturally opposed to a "New GnR" could probably get away with shit talking the song on a largely unmoderated forum?

I loved it when I first heard it but wasn't an active internet user back then.

I like it but it isn't in my top Gn'R songs. This isn't a fan site where it's mandatory to lick Axl's balls. If someone doesn't like the song why should they pretend they do just because Axl is posting here?

I think it's fantastic. I don't think anyone should pretend to like anything.

It appears to have become more popular in recent years

It just didn't sound that great.

There is a reason that it did absolutely nothing when it was released.

Just not a very good song.

Axl's voice is the key to GnR's success. OMG didn't sound like classic Axl vocally. Why would you have your home run hitter try and bunt the ball?

But I will say the small clip we heard with the latest leaks has intrigued me. A revamped OMG with a pure hard rock feel to it......that I could get into.

I hope it gets played live this tour and I'd love to hear the new version as well. I think we have a very small segment of fans on both sides here. There are those who swing from Axl's nuts and argue that silk worms is a masterpiece & on the other end you have those who will hate anything Axl does because Slash and Duff aren't involved.

I'm old so I've had 25 plus years with the AFD songs and only five or so with the Chi Dem material. Catcher, Better and TWAT are on my list of top Gn'R songs though.

To each their own, I'm glad that we've got one decently-mixed version of what ChiDem songs would have sounded like if the album was released '99-'01. I'd like to hear songs like ChiDem, Riad and IRS in demo forms from the OMG era (glad we have the IRS '99 demo, that's really cool, and the live versions of ChiDem from '01-'02 are so... weird). I love the drums on the End of Days release, the disco beat, Axl's distorted vocals, the batshit insane lyrics... Has really grown on me over the years.

That said, I much, much, MUCH prefer the hard rock version snippet of Silkworms we heard recently to the RIR '01 version :P

I remember that old forum. That place didn´t last very long. It was trolling 24/7 about everything. The layout was lame, no sections. Everything that was off topic was mixed with the GN´R topics. That crazy woman, the stoker, was a member there. We didn´t know it was her until later when she was arrested. Everybody was bashing everybody all the time just for the hell of it. And in every topic we could find porn pictures. There was no moderator. So whatever was said there was irrelevant. I´m not a big fan of OMG but nobody should pay attention to what was said there. The Axl rant in RIR 2001 was about that place.

I was never aware that Axl was posting, and everything I posted was utter non sense. The whole thing was a bit of fun, then it moved to the forum where it got serious. I remember constant warnings from Eric and a banner that said "Forum - Try It". I don't know the answer to your question.

MODS - Does the old board still exist, if so is it possible to read back through the old posts?

This is a piece of GNR fandom which is only talked about by fans luckily enough to be around, I agree it would be cool to have a archive of sorts and look back. I've ran out of likes but thanks for the insight.

I'd love to read what the members Axl ranted about had said to get him to speak about it at Rio.

I think for whatever reason a lot of fans have a problem with the industrial sound, I'd rank it in my top 10, without a doubt.

Initially I thought that CD would be closer in style to Oh My God and I think it probably was in 2001 (judging by the sound of the leaks), but the end product is probably closer to the Illusion era epics than it is to more industrial stuff like OMG. I'd imagine the most industrial stuff got vaulted.

It sounded like an intense GNR song, it just wasn't a Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child, Paradisd City, November Rain, or Civil War. That doesn't make it bad, but the fans I'm sure were anticipating new material to be top of the chart material. Oh my God just isn't a song that can accomplish that. I think the level of expectation turned a lot of fans off from being supported of the song.

I like the song, but I've only met one other person in "real life" that liked it-honestly.

I think calling it one of Gun's best songs ever is drawing a really long bow.

Everyone I've played it for really liked it. If I didn't tell them first, most didn't even realize it was GNR though and some seemed pretty shocked that it was.
