House of Cards returns

Me! Just watched the first season a month ago. It was one of those shows I knew I'd like so I waited until season two was close to release.

I'm curious where they're going to take the season. Do you think Frank's plans are done? I realize in season one he indicated that he'd like to run for President eventually, but do you think he'll try to expedite the transition by somehow forcing the current President's hand?

Or will season two be all about damage control, with Zoe, Janine and co. going after Frank now knowing some of the extent to which Frank manipulated his way to his new position.

Should be interesting!

I think he will try to get Walker to resign or get him impeached. He seems to still be holding a grudge against Walker and Vasquez. Plus he openly mocked the position of Vice President early on in season one, so I'm sure he has no intention of staying there.

I think his past dabbling in homosexuality will come up, and I think his ties to Russo's death will come into the media. But I doubt he'll get pinned for the murder, there's still at least one other season.

Based on the trailer it looks like he gets Zoey's lover/ the reporter guy thrown in jail. So maybe that's how he puts a stop to their meddling.

I'm on like episode nine of the first season so I timed it pretty well, I guess!

I like it but don't think it's quite as great as some people would lead you to believe. I think it's more of what it symbolizes (being kind of a flagship original series for Netflix with a premier cast and crew) but I do hope season two's writing improves a bit. Spacey is great and worth watching for his performance alone, but it's not quite up to the level of the best cable programming.

Why do you think it isn't as good as cable programming? I think this is one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

Maybe I have a bias for David Fincher, but he handles his characters and literary techniques so artfully.

I just think it's a great modern rendition of Macbeth and Richard III.

Didn't Fincher just direct the pilot? To me the 'tone' of the rest of the series definitely seemed to mimic Fincher but I only really felt his influence on the pilot.

I can't put my finger precisely on why I don't think it's 'great' per se - I think it's quite good and I like Spacey but there's something about it that just stops short of greatness. I pretty much agree with this guy's review of the second season: http://variety.com/2014/digital/reviews/review-house-of-cards-1201076822/

His comments about the first season kind of mirror mine.

Fincher directed two episodes, and is the executive producer of the show.

I guess I could see why people aren't as fond of it as I am. I think it's a David Fincher thing (his cinematography always gets me, especially the lighting).

And Kevin Spacey is phenomenal in it. Really great casting choice.

Did he direct the last episode of S1? I'm on that right now and it definitely feels to me like the heaviest - and best - episode of the series.

I'll definitely see how S2 plays out. I enjoy it, but I wouldn't rank it with the best of the best, e.g. Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire.

Just watched the first episode.

At this rate there will be no main characters left in 3-4 seasons. I was really shocked they (the writers) killed her, semi-shocked that Frank did it.
David Fincher is a baller.
I think they're making room for new main characters. Zoe really had no room in the picture anymore. But that scene still almost gave me a heart attack. I think POTUS Matthews, Tusk, Lucas, Claire, and the photographer will become new 'main' characters.

I think they need a bolder challenge to Frank this season.

And maybe a little more political commentary. The show doesn't say a lot about American politics. I guess it doesn't have to, since it's entertaining watching Franks scheming unfold, but I really want a little bit more of a theme next season. Or a deeper exploration of some of the characters and their motivations, particularly Frank.

They don't go into his background too much.

Finished.

I think Frank will get a pretty big challenge off the bat in season 3, he's gotta explain what Doug was doing up in MD, or at least distance himself from Doug. Still not good either way, he just got over a bunch of scandals. Why didn't Gavin (the hacker) check to verify if Lucas's story had sort of truth to it now that he has access to everyone's phone records? Maybe he wants to keep things quiet for himself? Maybe, seems like a possible slip up - writing wise. Overall was very pleased with S2 though, and those last few shots tell us the mean fightin' Frank Underwood is only just getting started.

Finished last night, great season. Only thing I would criticize is that you could pretty much tell what was going to happen before it did. The foreshadowing was too obvious sometimes.

I agree with Omar -

Since Doug is dead, does the deal with Gavin fall through? Also, I'm assuming Rachael is going to get caught pretty quickly - does she talk? And what about Remi and the PR guy (his name is slipping me right now)?

Finally, can anyone explain what in the fuck Meechum, Claire and Frank were doing hooking up in that scene?!

Bring on Season 3!

Edit:

Also, apparently this is very popular and (somehow) un-edited in China. I'm shocked! And I'll end my post with this:

It's entertaining as hell, and a fine show, but at heart, it's basically a high brow Scandal. Nothing going on under the surface there.

And Spacey is hammy as fuck in this. Amusing, yes. Entertaining, yes. Subtle, nuanced...not so much. Robin Wright is superb, though.
