Why Finck prefers NIN over GNR?

Recommended Posts

I know what you're gonna say... That Nine Inch Nails actually releases new music. But Robin is not part of that process! NIN music is produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and then Trent gathers a band with industrial rock musicians and they go on tour. The line-up is different every time. On Guns N' Roses, Robin - and all the guys - had freedom to compose and record whatever they wanted with full autonomy. I know that on the majority of the concerts he would be playing Slash's material, but he would occasionally play something he wrote and often record whatever he wanted, something that doesn't happen in Nine Inch Nails.

He's loved by practically all NIN fans. Can't say the same about GNR.

He hasn't really written any song with Trent, but he has the freedom to re-create the guitar parts live.

He can play more than guitar. He played so many different instruments with NIN I won't dare to list them here.

So maybe it's more fun? I don't know. Robin would never say Axl stole 10 years of his life but he left Guns twice for a reason...

Trent is probably more of a boss than Axl is but I'm sure Trent is a very straight-forward guy, without drama, delays and diva stuff like that.

Robin seems to be more of a soundscape creator than a bluesy guitarist, so maybe playing old GNR isn't really his thing.

It's a good question and you have good points but I just can't imagine the frustration of any musician who was part of the CD project and was promised lots of stuff that never came to fruition. I'd prefer playing with Trent as well.

No one knows if he prefers one over the other. Trent's into shaking up the NIN lineup this time around, so just because he's there now, doesn't mean he will be the next leg of the tour.

Trent's owned up to tantrums and diva behavior like any frontman tends to do.

Maybe he got tired on waiting to release some of his music, tired to playing the same songs every show, for years.
In Guns he had more freedom, but freedom for what? only Better was released, the rest was rejected, with NIN at least he's moving forward, and I think in the end that's why we all want.
I'd add the lack of challenges, the constant disappointments for the lack of activity. I think that be in Guns is like be in a job in which you gonna make a lot of money for nothing, it sounds fun, but after some time, you just get tired, and feel all rusty, for a person like Robin it would have been like wasting all his talent.
I'd loved if he had stayed in the band, but unfortunately Axl's lack of desire to release new music made him leave the band.
Hopefully when Axl is ready to release new music, he contacts Robin, as I think together they could create great music.

So

Many

Reasons

Robin gets to play among some of the greatest musicians ever in NIN, play with a band that's actually relevant and do tours that are drastically different each time in every aspect - setlist, arrangement, lineup, production.

NIN are most likely the greatest live band on the planet, and Robin is a huge part of that.

In GNR, a lot of fans are left scratching their heads at the dude running around wearing a garbage bag as a t shirt. In NIN Robin gets the largest applause during band introductions.

Finck isn't a talented songwriter. He's not. Go ahead and argue, but Finck will never be remembered as some sort of great songwriter.

He had songwriting input to ChiDem, which was an abysmal failure. He doesn't have songwriting input to NIN, which is a huge success.

There's no secret Illuminati shit going on here.

Axl doesn't allow his current band to create GNR music because he knows they aren't talented songwriters.

Robin prefers NIN because he gets to work on songs written by talented songwriters, instead of struggling with the songwriting himself.

The easiest answers are normally the correct answers.

"I was excited about the material - the band sounded good. But we'd get a song done to an extent and wait for Axl to write a lyric and/or song. I couldn't work on songs with titles like 'Instrumental 34' anymore." (Robin, Kerrang, 12/99)

It's incredible how many iterations of this band Axl has fucked up.

Greatest musicians ever? I don't know; that seems like a bit of a stretch... Plus, in GN'R, you've got world-class musicians as well. Bumblefoot is always being hired to do commercials and guest spots, produce other bands' albums, etc. (not to mention that he's practically a guitar messiah in terms of skill) Fortus, with his previous touring with huge pop acts. He wouldn't have been chosen by these giant megastars if his music skills weren't top notch. Say what you want about Ashba, but same goes: Nikki hired him for his side project, Neil Diamond; probably many other acts I & we are unaware of. Shit, he made the cut for Guns N' Roses. So it's not like you've just got a bunch of standard street-rock players in this band. We all know how selective Axl is in choosing his musicians in order to help create exceptional music. They need to be DAMN good.

NIN are most likely the greatest live band on the planet

that's just an opinion.

wearing a garbage bag as a t shirt.

hahahaha. i thought his style back then ruled, lol.

How?

I forgot english isn't your first langauge. So I read the title with an accent so it made sense ;) that probably sounds harsh but its not meant to be. "Why DOES finck.." sets the theme up better.

I thought the thread was going to be a quote from finck saying he prefers nin to gnr.

That crossed my mind... I didn't know if by putting Why DOES Finck I'd have to use Prefer or Prefers, though...

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but are you even aware of who has been in NIN? Because it's not a "stretch" at all.

Are you trying to tell me that Pino Palladio, Lisa Fischer, Trent Reznor, Adrian Belew and Mike Garson among many others, aren't considered some of the greatest musicians?
