The Ukraine Situation

This is an interesting read courtesy of John Pilger, a very well respected journalist for those of you who don't know him.

In February, the US mounted one of its "colour" coups against the elected government in Ukraine, exploiting genuine protests against corruption in Kiev. Obama's assistant secretary of state, Victoria Nuland, personally selected the leader of an "interim government". She nicknamed him "Yats". Vice President Joe Biden came to Kiev, as did CIA Director John Brennan. The shock troops of their putsch were Ukrainian fascists.

For the first time since 1945, a neo-Nazi, openly anti-Semitic party controls key areas of state power in a European capital. No Western European leader has condemned this revival of fascism in the borderland through which Hitler's invading Nazis took millions of Russian lives. They were supported by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), responsible for the massacre of Jews and Russians they called "vermin". The UPA is the historical inspiration of the present-day Svoboda Party and its fellow-travelling Right Sector. Svoboda leader Oleh Tyahnybok has called for a purge of the "Moscow-Jewish mafia" and "other scum", including gays, feminists and those on the political left.

I stopped reading there. First, understand that Pilger is well respected within certain circles, but is a very controversial character. He sees everything through a anti-American lens, so understand that his writing is going to be biased regardless of the circumstances.

Second, his assessment of the current Ukrainian political landscape is untethered from reality. Oleh Tyahnybok? Really? The guy got 1.16 percent of the vote for President. He, and his party, are fringe players at best. To claim that neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic forces control key parts of state power within Ukraine is nuts.

Pilger might have been respected 40 years ago for his coverage of the Vietnam War, but he's certainly not anyone I'd want to include as a source in any argument regarding current events.

If he wants to assume that all members of Svoboda are Neo-Nazis and/or anti-Semites, then yes, he's a little deranged. Certainly there are some bad apples within the party, but all three Svoboda representatives in charge of ministries joined the party after its transformation in 2004. Moreover, their influence in governing is extremely limited (The influence of Svoboda in the government is very limited, says Kyryl Savin. "They don't control the government. The vast majority of the government is from Yulia Tymoshenko's Fatherland party and the most important portfolios are in the hands of its ministers," he said. The three Svoboda ministers have not made any notable impression to date. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Sych is the author of an older draft law against abortion. Environment Minister Mokhnyk comes from the region of Chernobyl. "That's the only thing that links him to ecology," said Kyryl Savin. And Agriculture Minister Shvaika has yet to make any mark in his area of expertise.) There are far more fascist parties in other countries of Europe than Svoboda.

Again, the current President, Petro Poroshenko, won the May 25th election with over 50 percent of the vote. Tyahnybok, the Svoboda candidate, won less than 2 percent of the vote. Of the nine major political parties in Ukraine (including non-affiliated candidates), Svoboda came in eighth in the 2012 parliamentary elections.

Pilger grossly over-exagerates the radicalism of current Svoboda legislators, the scope of their power within the parliament and government institutions, and the party's popular support within the country. Again, he's not anyone I'd take too seriously on matters of Ukrainian governance.

New photographs exclusively obtained by the Washington Free Beacon reveal that Russian military forces have been more involved in the arming and training of Ukrainian separatist forces than previously disclosed.

The often-gruesome photographs clearly display Russian troops entering Ukraine with advanced military hardware and weapons, including tanks and advanced infantry fighting vehicles.

OMG!!!

But wait. We have an update.

UPDATE 3:11 P.M.: Following publication of this story, serious questions have been raised about the authenticity of some of the photographs provided by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R., Okla.). Several images of the Russian convoys appear to have been taken in 2008, during Russia’s conflict with Georgia. Given the similarities between the earlier images and those provided by the senator’s office, the Washington Free Beacon is investigating further and will update as necessary.

:rofl-lol:
