Paul Stanley Told Slash: ‘Go F— Yourself’

Recommended Posts

Paul Stanley says he had to teach Slash a pretty harsh lesson in rock and roll diplomacy back at the start of the Guns N Roses guitarists meteoric rise to fame.

In a story from his first-ever autobiography, Face the Music: A Life Exposed, the Kiss frontman recalls the time he was asked to meet with Guns N Roses, who were about to start work on their Appetite for Destruction album. He wasnt all that impressed on first sight, describing guitarist Izzy Stradlin as unconscious, with drool coming out of the side of his mouth, and Slash as half-comatose.

Stanley says he showed Slash how to tune his guitar in the five-string open-G method preferred by Keith Richards, and offered to put him in touch with people who could get him free guitars. Paul then went to go see Guns N Roses play two small L.A. club shows, which he describes as stupendous.

The second of those nights is apparently where trouble began between the two guitar heroes. They werent happy with the guy mixing their sound, Stanley recalls, And Slash asked me out of the blue to help out. Decades later, Slashs recollections of the night would be faulty at best. He liked to pretend I had dared to meddle with their sound.

Things only got worse when Slash allegedly began dragging Stanleys name through the mud. Immediately after my interactions with the band, I started to hear lots of stories Slash was saying behind my back he called me gay, made fun of my clothes, all sorts of things designed to give him some sort of rock credibility at my expense. This was years before his top hat, sunglasses and dangling cigarette became a cartoon costume that he would continue to milk with the best of us for decades.

As his version of the story goes, Stanley got the final word in a few months later when Slash called up to see about those free guitars. You want me to help you get guitars after you went around saying all that s about me behind my back? He responded. You know, one thing youre going to have to learn is not to air your dirty laundry in public. Nice knowing you. Go f yourself.

Not really a revelation, this is mentioned in Slashes book, is it not? He's just pissed cuz they mugged him off and still went on to be the best thing since tinned peaches.

I think his suggestions were taken as being told what to do, and that also got under Axl's skin, but it sounds like Slash made it into something bigger and it became about how KISS were old and in the way, and GNR were ready to take on the big dogs.

They might get along fine now, but Paul hasn't forgotten.

Exactly. They couldn´t care less about Paul Stanley. But Adler was big Kiss fan. So to make him happy they fooled around with Stanley for a minute or two. And Slash mentioned this in his biography book They wanted Stanley to go away then they did everything in their power to piss him off

wasn't this about the time paul made it known he wanted to produce AFD and was talking about how he would record it if given the chance and some of the changes he thought GnR should make?

"we're gonna have to re-write it to make it a pop hit". Yeah, ok Paul.

He only had a track record with his own band, but not as a producer for other bands.

If this talk about Paul Stanley wanting to do something in the production end of AFD is true, then that statement reminds me of this quote I found, during the time when Rush opened for KISS.

"Neil was incredible. I remember that when Neil joined the band and started writing the songs with them, Paul Stanley told me, 'I love Neil to death, but he ruined that band. They will never be anything.'" - Mick Campise, Kiss Roadie, Kiss Alive Forever: The Complete Touring History

Never be anything, ehhhh? At least, Rush managed to keep the same line-up for approaching 40 years, come July, and counting, and make good compelling music during those 40 years. Something that KISS would never say that they can do on a consistent basis, regardless of whatever BS claims they make.

Paul Stanley can go f*** himself. The other guy as well. What-his-face. The one with the reality show.

All right, I apologize for that rant, but I needed to get that out. Sorry.

I was made for loving you baby / you were made for loving me.....

Every band has a song or two that doesn't hold up well over the years, but every once in a while a band has a song that completely invalidates the rest of their catalog, in perpetuity. Kiss is such a band.

Lots of bands abandon artistic integrity when the money starts rolling in, but some never had any to begin with. Kiss is such a band. It was never anything more than a financial venture, so it's no surprise that Stanley's musical instincts have always been for shit.

Paul Stanley is a nazi though:

March 1978 - Peter Criss & Paul Stanley of KISS. On tour in Japan and dressed as Nazi officers. The outfits were purchased by Ace Frehley earlier in the day. The three, knocked on Gene Simmons’ hotel-room. Simmons, with his selective memory, later recalled in his autobiography that it was just Ace Frehley in the Nazi uniform. The photo below, which was taken by Criss’ wife, Lydia Criss, dispels Simmons’ version of the story.

not just saying this because i'm a fan of slash. paul stanley is a joke.

So is Kiss in general when you think about it. Sure they've got a handful of great songs and are undeniably a staple of rock n' roll history but when you consider how many albums and songs they put out and albums released, the vast majority is garbage that nobody cares about. They were more about image and putting on a pornographic show blown up with massive marketing schemes than they were about music.

I love KISS, but thank GOD Paul Stanley didn't produce AFD. I can imagine it sounding like late 80s KISS.

Every band wanted to the The Beatles. Except KISS. KISS wanted to be Coca Cola.
