What is it with the trend of these rampages in America? I know there has been cases in other countries such as China, but there is undeniably a trend in the U.S. when it comes to attacks causing as many casualties as possible in places like schools, universities and cinemas.

What is it about the culture that these mentally unstable people feel the need to cause as much carnage as possible against innocent people.

It is so fucked up.

In fairness Bran, if the person had an AR-16 there would be a lot more casualties and multiple fatalities.

I'm not one of those do-gooder lefty anti-gun types either. I just think the laws on gun ownership could be more sensible and practical.

i know it was just a jab at the fact some people think you just need a gun to hurt huge amounts of people.

Yeah it ignores the elephant in the room - the massive mental health problem in the US.

Just look at the members of this forum, for a start!

I know...it is just inevitable that McCoy is going to go postal at some stage and attack a crowd with a butter knife.

News just in - 8 people have been kicked to death by a dwarf with cowboy boots and wicked highlights.

The student who was accepted to 8 Ivy League schools lives in one of the supposed "worst" towns on Long Island (Mastic).

Some of the schools where tragedy strikes, are in "nice" neighborhoods (you'll be amused at the :35 mark).

If anything this incident is an argument FOR firearm regulation or ban. There were 0 deaths; what would've been the likelihood of that had it been firearms instead of knives?

The US has about 320 million people. Norway, for example, has 5 million . Proportionally there should be more than 60 killing sprees in the USA for one in Norway.

Not sure you can use data in that manner to state how many killing sprees there SHOULD be. For example Ireland has a similar population to Norway. We have had zero mass killing spree's.

Actually no. That was in Northern Ireland during the troubles. It is a separate country and the context is a war.

There have been zero mass killings in the Republic of Ireland.

EDIT: To be precise there were two bombings in The Republic of Ireland in 1974 in which 33 people were killed. The bombing were carried out by the Ulster Volunteer Force as part of the conflict known as the troubles. There were also other incidents carried out by the IRA and other paramilitary groups in which individuals were assassinated as part of the troubles conflict.

But in terms of comparable mass killing sprees by a civilian armed with a high powered machine gun targeting innocent people in schools or universities or cinemas there have been no such incidents.

You never said Republic of Ireland, just Ireland; how was I meant to know you mean south o' the border?

Yes, the Republic of Ireland has had no spree killings (I take your word for it) but it has had plenty of other acts of mass violence - "war" (not war; terrorism) or no "war" Ireland (both parts) were very dangerous places.

Yeah, I know but we have discussed the same thing many times before and this is one datum that is never mentioned. Surely, education, society and whatnot is the key but it's also true that, when the population is notoriously bigger, the odds of some crazy dude doing something like this are bigger too. :shrugs:

It could happen in Ireland one of these days as it happened in Norway, Switzerland, Denamrk, etc. before. No one is free of an atrocity like this. Even with the best education and regulation, human beings are able of anything under certain (mental or not) circumstances. And one more thing, it's also more difficult to enforce the law and control every place or person in a huge country.

Edit: For example, Germany or the US can't have the way of living of Norway (including law and security in that way of life) because it wouldn't work.

Sorry, here when people say Ireland it is implied they are referring to the Republic. Northern Ireland is always - Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland was indeed a very dangerous place. The Republic? Not so much. In fact, quite the opposite.
