Ministry Of Sound - Addicted To Bass 2014

As you (and others on the forum) may be aware, I was born in Croydon and reside here too...

Croydon boasts home of Dub Step...

There was this really cool looking music shop that had decks in it and all sorts of music equipment called Drum & Bass on London Road... They had the coolest graffiti art sign along that road, it basically was some Ancient Egyptian inspired art work... pretty cool... But this was back in day, like in the 1990s - That shop is no more, but... It's that shop there that also created Dub Step.

It was just a really cool shop called Drum & Bass. - That's where Dubstep comes from.

It's all a big incestuous family beginning with reggae, switching onto dub reggae which shot off towards creating hip hop and then like, all this shit we been listening to in England from Jungle to Drum n Bass and all that, it all comes from that riddim driven reggae skank and bass. I say this today and I have said this before, reggae is the true sound of the street of England, the true underground sound...and always has been. From Ska, to reggae, to dub, to ragga to grime.

I think that'd be a fair assumption, yes  Reggae basically is the accentuation of drum and bass in music as opposed to guitar and drums, the guitar is used as a percussion instrument basically, to me it's like...breaking music down to the essential components that speak to us, the beat and the rhythm, it's like supreme dance music in that sense, made to make you move.

I feel sorry for people nowadays that expierience music through ipods and computers, you ain't really heard that kinda music unless you heard it big, through a sound system, bass isn't something you hear, you're supposed to feel it, it's supposed to buzz right through you, this music was designed to be listened to like that...in this day and age where no one cares about stereos and all that you can barely really hear the music, its so tinny and lacking in depth.

A good pair of in ear headphones fixes that.

It really doesn't, it couldn't do. Don't get me wrong, it certainly helps and gives you an idea of it but...this music is dance music, it's designed to be listened to on proper systems.

Dance music is different because you want it all over the room making the floor shake, but for general music you can't really go wrong with a ~$150 pair of sennheiser in-ears. You can hear everything clear as day as long as the quality of the audio file is good enough. It's gonna sound like shit no matter what if you're listening to some 128 kbps shit you downloaded off of YouTube.

I see what you're saying but my point is, with this kinda bass driven music, it doesn't really have the same effect unless it's through a proper system, bass culture doesn't work on headphones, it just doesn't. The music is so stripped down that half of the effect of it is the reverberation, specifically this kinda of music, has to be experienced in that way. I mean you can still get it without that on some level but the full effect of it is through sound systems. I think a lot of why some people don't get reggae has something to do with that.

The bass, in a rock context, is a subtle instrument, it's designed to just give depth, few people can really separate it the rest or pick it out by ear in rock music...so the headphone and earphone thing works for rock music because the bulk of it is the guitar and drums and stuff, with the bass being just an accoutrement almost. So when you put the bass in the forefront like that it only really works in a Dancehall context because you can really feel it.

These records are produced with dance halls in mind, they are literally pressed and sent to dancehall DJs to play, they are all about depth.

Like that for instance, now listen to that on your computer and it's just like...litterally all you can hear is the sound of the drumstick tapping the drum rim and the vocals and thats it. Now on a good pair of Sennheisers you'll clock the bass but it's still not enough, it still doesn't make the song sound right or good it's just the vocals over like a hum...

Then there's listening to it being blasted out of massive speakers at the Nottinghill Carnival...THEN you hear it, it has a context.

That said i wanna get a pair of Sennheisers...i got the Dre Beats ones and they were shit quite frankly. There's so many out there now, RZA has some out, 50 has some out.
