Marc Maron

Recommended Posts

Hey Marc, sorry for the non GNR question but I just got done Listening to the Marc Maron WTF podcast with Todd Barry (most recent episode I think) and Maron mentioned going to Canter's for soup recently. From the context of their conversation it sounded like it was a regular hang out for comedians back in the day. Just wondering if you ever met Maron or any other notable comedians over the years? I'm a big stand-up fan so I had to ask. Sorry again for getting off the GNR subject.

Hard to say. I see a lot of them but I don't like to bother them while they are eating. I guess you can say Johnny Depp would be one of the big ones. I saw Gene Simmons 2 weeks ago I was going to tell him how close he came to having Slash in Kiss in 1982. Slash didn't make it past the phone interview that Paul gave him. Good thing for that because what would have become of GNR when Tracii left if Slash wasn't there at the time?

Holy shit, I knew Slash auditioned for Poison, never knew he tried out for KISS! Any idea why he failed the phone interview?

Holy crap! That's crazy!

I'm a KISS freak and I've never heard any of that!

Thats because Kiss doesn't even know it. They must have interviewed a shit load of people. Also Slash was going by Saul back then. There was a guitar shop called Hollywood Music near Fairfax and Melrose that Slash worked at so during the dead time Slash would plug in and play. The owner saw that Slash was special and recommended him for the interview. So all Paul knows is that some kid that worked at a guitar shop was good and worth a phone call. No way would he even remember that it was Slash he interviewed. Funny thing is Slash doesn't even remember being interviewed for it.

That's awesome, I'm glad he didn't get the job of course but I can imagine Slash with Gene, Paul and Eric Carr making some pretty great KISS music, and more in the traditional style than Vinnie Vincent.

Like Ace, Slash seems to be an intuitive, born guitarist- I'm sorry to derail any further Marc, but was Slash "fully formed" (playing style wise) at this stage?
