Will Duff replace Tommy as Bass for GNR?

Recommended Posts

I created a separate thread as a lot of good debate is being lost on a number of different threads.

I have mixed opinions about this but in short I believe (as we type and spk) things MAY be evolving.

What's your view/take?

PLEASE KEEP RESPECTFUL!

Less and less members of the failed CD era would be on stage, I'd love to see that. The proof that this Axl solo adventure was a failure. Also, happy for Duff. He could play along his friend, make easy money for 4-5 months a year and he could be the bridge between Axl and..... NOT!

On one hand, touring has visibly taken its toll on Tommy, and few people would dispute the suspicion that he has a tendency to hit the booze hard. Axl will be aware of how Duff rejoining has essentially revitalized the band, and diluted the press' usually hostile perception of modern GNR. It may be that Duff coming back was a sort of trial and error; with a view to asking him back if things went well.

But on the other hand, Tommy has maintained from the beginning that he will return in Bethlehem. In my view, that is the fact we should focus on.

What I think?

I think Tommy can start a new career as an actor and not require any costume, he can be an extra on this show:

I would love it if Duff came back. He's be good for GNR, as we've seen in SA. I think he has some leverage over Axl, so IF there's new music on the way, he won't be holding things up. Nothing against Tommy, but as I became a fan in 1991, so I prefer Duff.

What makes me somewhat hopeful ? The fact that GNR seems to post quite a few pics of Axl and Duff on social media. It's not as if they're keeping it low profile. Even on the tweet about Golden Gods, there's this picture of Axl and Duff, without the rest of the band. Furthermore, if Duff replaces Tommy at Golden Gods, the casual fans will think Duff joined GNR again for good, wouldn' t they ? I mean, not everyone keeps up with this saga.

And the fact that Subsy made this thread, where only recently he said there was literally no reason to assume that Duff would stay on longer than the 5 SA shows :)

I think you used the right word there: evolving...

If it does happen, it won't be like the many other line-up changes that we've seen, with one player instantly replacing another. But I can definitely see Duff being used more and more, with Tommy focusing on other projects.

The key question, for me at least, is whether there's any chance of new music coming out. As counter-intuitive as this might sound, Duff taking over on bass might indicate that new music is less likely. If GNR is truly nothing more than a touring act that recycles through its back catalogue, then Duff's inclusion makes sense. Tommy might be more inclined to stick around if another album with his contributions was coming out. But now that it's been over five years since the release of the last album, and the horizon shows no indication of another release, there might be very little rationale left for Tommy to stick around. Sure, there's the money, but by this point he's probably past that. Where Duff is in his career seems more line with where Axl currently finds himself.

I've always maintained that if Axl loses the drive to release new music he should retire this lineup and get back as many of the classic lineup as he can. My bet is we'll be seeing more and more Duff as time wears on. Just look at the effect his inclusion had on ticket sales in Argentina (if the reports are to be believed). If Axl's playing for his retirement now, he has to be aware of the positive effect Duffy's presence has at the ticket gate.

At the very least, Tommy will stick around through the residency. He and the band have stated numerous times that he'll be back in Bethlehem, and Duff has Walking Papers gigs in Europe that conflict with the last week of the residency.

Honestly, I don't see it happening unless The Replacements go full time again, which they've said they don't want to do. And even then we don't know if Duff would want to rejoin full time. I guess what I'm saying is as of right now, there's too many angles to assume anything.

You can bet your bottom dollar Duff would love to be back in the fold full time, Msl said a while ago that Duff has been trying to get back in the band for years, and most in the band were happy for it to happen (make of that what you will).

It was amazing seeing Duff with Axl, but I don't want to see Duff being just a hired hand in Axl's GNR. I mean, 5 shows with Duff in SA and Axl couldn't be bothered with So Fine, even when the crowd in Recife was chanting for it.

I love Duff, but I dig Tommy's work on ChiDem, and I feel like he genuinely wants to make new music/see the unreleased music out there. I can't see Duff giving up Walking Papers and Loaded to play the same setlist for years on end and put up with late starts, tantrums, etc. More guest appearances from Duff and Izzy would be amazing, but I want this band to get out of the funk it's in and move forward... unless Axl and DJ are planning on making a GNRXX:AM album

If Tommy + Bumble leave, I can't see Axl releasing new music ever again.

i think Tommy will do the residency and betlehem show and stuff i mean he wouldn't just walk off like that without any goodbye show or whatever if he leaves and if Duff would join the band again, things are ofcourse looking like it as what we are discussing right now but i think things will be clear as soon as this tour ends before that we shouldn't pin ourselves onto anything
