Forum Changes - Merging Discussion and News, Side Projects and the Slash section

One positive: Buckethead discussion, back where it belongs! Buck suffered being stuck in the dead section for so long, it's clear people want to talk about him and his music.

That aspect seems to be bothering quite a few people. I quite like it too. The thread about Matt was another good example.

My ideal "vision" for this whole thing (and part of where the push came from) was actually to have kept all the subforums, but to have an optional "my feed" subforum above everything else... The idea was that the "my feed" section would display threads from any subforum you chose to "follow". You could mix AG, D&N, Side Projects, etc all into the one feed if you wanted, and ignore the sections you don't want to appear in there. The site needs to be more mobile-friendly, and I don't think having to navigate in and out of subforums is conducive to that.

Unfortunately, that wasn't really feasible with the current board software, and I feel like the whole concept may have been confusing for people. So... that's when I moved onto thinking about this and pushing the other guys to give it a shot.

...So if it does end up that we go back to the old format, let's be clear that this is on my head.

Also, I want to apologise for singling out "Slash fans" in the original post because it seems I put a lot of people offside with that. We do know the trolling goes both ways, and many of the "Axl fans" are just as bad, if not worse.

Another thing that would be a good idea is the day of a gig or whatever have a count down clock on top of the main forum. Theres always a million people asking how long till the show starts. It gets confusing with everone being in diff time zones.

If being mobile friendly is a concern, hurry up and get rid of the Past Concerts/Axl Rose Chats sections so it doesn't take two clicks to get to D&N. That's more annoying than the Slash section ever was.

Made a small change to fix this and promoted D&N to it's own category.

Still too much clutter for my taste. Certainly isn't a deal breaker, but I much prefer the old format and feel it makes much more sense.

Yep - at this point it seems me and about 3 other people are all that seem to prefer it.

I'm not as bothered by everything being thrown in together.. If you look past that aspect, it's clear that the threads themselves are getting a lot more replies than they were in Side Projects. I'm not saying that's the only measure of success or anything, but it's noticeable.

EDIT: Take this thread about Sorum, which hit 3 pages and got 1500 views in 48 hours: http://www.mygnrforum.com/index.php?/topic/207248-matt-sorum-says-the-launch-of-vr-was-the-biggest-moment-in-his-career/

The last four threads about Matt, which were originally posted to Side Projects and would have been on the front couple pages for weeks:

I'm not going to force people into keeping things this way, but it's worth seeing a month or so out to see if any minds are changed.

HV's point is true. I'm not a huge fan of how cluttered everything looks right now either, but I've found myself reading threads I wouldn't have otherwise noticed, including the 'Slash guest appearances' one. Not because I don't like Slash, but because I'm just not always used to browsing his subforum as often.
