Ugh, this is like asking a parent their favorite children for me. That below list is my best but probably not accurate. The real answer is- "all of them."

1. Stairway to Heaven

2. Achilles Last Stand

3. Kashmir

4. 10 Years Gone

5. Whole Lotta Love

6. No Quarter

7. Since I've Been Loving You

8. The Rover

9. When The Levee Breaks

10. Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You

I'm actually considering getting into Led Zeppelin. I know this might sound like blasphemy, but I've only heard two of their songs: "Stairway to Heaven" and one other I can't recall the name of. From your "like a parent picking a favorite child comment," I take it you're the guy to ask about that, haha. What would you recommend somebody start with?

1.when the levee breaks

2.the rain song

3.thank you

4.babe I'm gonna leave you

5.friends

6.no quarter

7.over the hills and far away

8.going to California

9.the ocean

10.dancing days

My first two picks are legit their best songs imo but the rest can be rearranged. Always felt that Zep was fucking weak next to other rock bands but then I heard WTLB and I felt that truly captured something badass and something that essentially should be named as a great Rock song. While most of their stuff seems rather weak and when I heard em I thought they were like an alt. band (yeah idk why lol) and when I heard RS I felt that melodic sound they made was pronounced no better than in this song. Plant and the arrangements around him just manifested something cool and dream like, essentially made me realize that maybe loudness/ meanness doesn't always have to be the answer in Rock music.

I know this is a cliche comment but in this case it really holds: listen to the albums.

Ideally listen to all of them in chronological order of release but if you don't have the time just listen to LZ2, LZ4 and Physical Graffiti.

To me the top 3 are easy:

1. Kashmir

2. Ten years gone

3. Rain song

After that it gets difficult to compare them. Going by the most plays in my iTunes library it's:

4. Going to California

5. When the levee breaks

6. Night flight

7. In the light

8. Down by the seaside

9. Fool in the rain

10. Bring it on home

1. The Rain Song (I just love it)

2. Trampled Underfoot live (I love live versions of this when Page goes into hyper mode)

3. Fool in the rain (i love Plant's lyrics on this one)

4. Going to California (best zep acoustic track imo)

5. Ten Years Gone (studio or live, I love this song)

6. Bron Yur Aur stomp (I always get down to it)

7. The Ocean (best of zep's riff rock imo)

8. Good times bad times (I love the way it hits you)

9. Traveling Riverside Blues (I love what they did with Robert Johnson's song, took it to new heights).

10. How Many More Times live (I especially love the live performance of this one from the late 60's.)

HM: Stairway live, Kashmir live, Whole lotta love live (the htwww version is fucking epic. I love the in between songs they do in it also), Since I've been loving you live, In the light, No quarter live (I have 30 min versions of this one that are fucking great. JPJ keyboard solos plus I love the Jones/Page interplay on it).

In no particular order, just off the top of my head, probably the most impartial way for me to do it. Because you know I definitely have much more than 10 faves.

Achilles' Last Stand

The Lemon Song

Heartbreaker

Kashmir

In The Light

Stairway

Whole Lotta Love

Hots On For Nowhere

Hey Hey What Can I Do

The Ocean

Oh boy, yes. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band and that will never, ever change. About 10 years ago I started playing guitar, my mom's love for the band and my dad's picking to Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and Stairway got me wanting to start. I saw a copy of "Early Days- Latter Days" (Their old greatest hits) at Best Buy and I started with that.

They have a newer greatest hits called "Mothership" and I think that would be a good start. Zeppelin is a band best experienced by their individual albums but since you only know two songs I think the greatest hits package is the way to go at the very start. Pick up or download "Mothership" and their first live album, "The Song Remains the Same" at the same time sort of as companions to one another. Led Zeppelin was an entirely different band in a live setting.

I feel as though that is a good introduction and then from there it is a good idea to get into their individual albums, the DVD, and the other live albums. If you really like them after exploring all of that then there is a fantastic world of bootlegs to look into.

1. The Rain Song (I just love it)

2. Trampled Underfoot live (I love live versions of this when Page goes into hyper mode)

For me Zep is entirely different live.

No Quarter from LA in 1977, Kashmir from the O2 in 2007, Dazed and Confused and Stairway from the 1975 Earl's Court shows, and Whole Lotta Love from BBC Sessions are my current favorites. Like, how can a band ever top those performances live?

Yes, I agree. That's why I named a lot of live performances, because they are better than the studio counterparts imo. Of course the studio stuff is great also, but some of the songs (trampled underfoot and since I've been loving you, just to name two) are soo much better live than the studio versions. But you have to be willing to look past the inperfections, which many people just can't get over the sound quality (not you, but many casual listeners). They want the studio stuff, but I'm personally bored of most of their studio releases, heard them too many times. But the live stuff is still fresh to my ears, inperfections and all.

I have 3 zeppelin boots that I listen to the most, San Diego 75, Maryland 77, and the last show they ever played in Hamburg (I think it was Hamburg)Germany in 1980. The last show is sloppy, Page was obviously out of his mind, but being as it was the last true zeppelin show, its worth the listen. But the other two shows are great. I also have random tracks from Earls Court (my fav trampled underfoot ever) and the Dansmark show from 69' (great for first album live stuff). Of course the last two were made popular by the dvd that came out 10 years ago or so. Plus I have all the official live releases; O2, htwww, and song remains the same. But ya, I go to this live stuff way more than the studio stuff.

Speaking of favorite bootlegs.

Live on Blueberry Hill

Listen To This Eddie

Fillmore 69

Texas Pop Festival 69

Any from Tokyo in 71 and 72

If you haven't heard those, check them out. A good lot of the pre '73 shows are unbelievable, back when Plant still had the voice.

Supposedly the Pontiac Silverdome 77 show was filmed like the Seattle one from the same tour. Still no footage has ever surfaced.

I hope it does one day, it is one of the highlights of the 77 tour

Jealous my mom was at that one

In no order, I tried to stay away from the "Stairway, Kashmir, Immigrant Song, etc." type list:

In The Evening

Nobody's Fault But Mine

Down By The Seaside

In My Time

Rock And Roll

Gallows Pole

Bring It On Home

Black Dog

How Many More Times

Your Time Is Gonna Come

Really??? They need to release some of that stuff. I don't know why bands don't release more live stuff like that. If a song is bad, then don't release that song. But I'm sure the majority of the show is just fine.

It is because there are no multi tracks. A shame, really, as it could still have good audio quality

Indeed, I wanted to put stuff like Tangerine, Out On The Tiles, Celebration Day, Rain Song, The Ocean, Song Remains, Tea For One, Custard Pie, In The Light, The Wanton Song etc etc

10 "soft" and 10 "rockers" would be more do-able.
