Tesla - Simplicity

Surely I'm not the only Tesla fan here, but I looked around and didn't see a thread for their new album.

Has anyone else given it a listen? Same great Tesla sound, they have been able to preserve their sound for so long now. They still sound as good to me as they did in 1990.

I didn't know this had came out.

I LOVE Tesla, one of the 3-4 most underrated bands of the last 25 years.

Every few years they put out a really solid album that will have 2-3 really great songs. A lot of the old-school rock bands are still out there touring and putting out albums, but Tesla actually releases songs that are just as good as songs from the eras prime time. Caught In A Dream - check out that song.

I shall check it out tonight and get back to you with a review.

It certainly isn't as good as Into the Now or Forever More. And even though Twisted Wires only had a song or two of new material, I still enjoyed that album much more than Simplicity.

Jeff still sounds the same, and Tesla in general loves releasing new music for their fans, so I can't really complain about anything. Lyrics are a little corny on this record, or at least they are in comparison to the others. Just an average album with one or two knockout songs, like you pointed out. (At the moment, I'm digging Cross My Heart and Sympathy).

I absolutely loved everything they did up to and including Into The Now. I thought their last record (Forevermore) was just terrible. I haven't got around to listening to the new one yet, but I'm hoping for better.

Well, their last record was in 2011 Twisted Wires and The Acoustic Sessions. It has two new songs Better Off Without You and Second Street, both of which are wonderful. They redid some of the classics, and every version sounds sick. Jeff's voice is just so raw and stripped down. I really like what he did with Shine Away!

Forevermore was iffy. They were going for a harder, faster sound. It was a risk, and was hit or miss with the fanbase. I enjoyed So What! and The First Time.

Totally forgot about Twisted Wires. Liked that album a lot. Thanks for the reminder!

I love Tesla but its very hard for me to care about this album. I don't know, they just seem so past it that I don't even care they have a new album, despite the fact that they've always stayed consistently great, if that makes any sense. I just could not be less enthused for a new hour long album by Tesla. And I was a big fan of Forever More and have seen them about 5 times in the last 6 years or so. Listening to the album right now and everyone sounds great, I just have no interest in the songs whatsoever. I'll have to give it a closer listen, but they are just a band I feel I never need new music from again, which is odd.

I heard the 1st single and jeff ' s voice sounded shot to me. But it's gotten favorable reviews so I'll probably pick it up at some point. Though I haven't bought a tesla album since their 3rd release, which was a disappointment to me. Though their 1st 2 albums are among my favorites from that era

Have only listened to it once - before work today - so I can't give a full review. But the two things that pop out..........wow, some really great songs. It sounds like classic Tesla. I love songs like Try So Hard and Stir It Up. From first listen, this album sounds like it would have been a perfect fifth album from them. The first four are - ino - masterpieces of the genre.

My only complaint is that it is too long and after awhile the songs sort of blend in with each other.

Like it or hate it, you can't say that about Chinese Democracy. Shacklers doesn't sound like Better. Catcher doesn't sound like IRS. If The World doesn't sound like Rhiad.

So that's my only complaint on first listen. Doesn't seem to be a lot of variety and it might be a bit long.

But the songs that did stand out to me...........after first listen............I'm giving this a solid A-minus.

I have always really liked Tesla, they were beyond the typical hair band as they really embraced blues and folk elements and had some great song writing. I picked up their new album and at first was disappointed in the first two tracks. Then things really picked up and I have to say, it is a fantastic record. I really recommend it.

Here is the lead single from it, its a great song!

Not bad.

Can you recommend any other songs?

Here are some of my favorites. I feel this is better than telling you to listen to each song in their discography. (Which is what I really recommend) :P

Mechanical Resonance (1986): Comin' Atcha Live, Little Suzi

The Great Radio Controversy (1989): Heaven's Trail, Love Song, The Way It Is

Psychotic Supper (1991) [THE Tesla Album]: Call It What You Want, Freedom Slaves, What You Give

Bust a Nut (1994): Invited, Rubberband, Try So Hard

Into The Now (2004): Come To Me, Into the Now

A Peace of Time (2007): Signs

I consider myself to be a pretty big Tesla fan, I've got all the albums, seen 'em 3 times. I've given Simplicity 2.5 listens.... I just can't get into most of it. The music sounds matured, but not in a good way. It sounds toned down from their earlier stuff (even Into The Now was pretty heavy). I think Jeff still sounds pretty solid, but the songwriting (music) was really poor, I thought at least. There are almost no memorable guitar riffs or solos.... that's what Tesla was about, in your face hard rock music. Forever More was OK, but Simplicity has been a pretty big disappointment for me. I'm sure I'll still see them live, as they're always good on the stage, but I had high hopes for the new Tesla record; hopes that were unfortunately not met.
