Lol, I made one.

And for the longest time ever, I had my username from that as my main/all round log in to facebook username, rather than having my email address (like everyone else); until I clicked on something that gave it my main profile's url and then facebook started asking for my email address again to log me in.

It's

Hey Tee Jay,

I noticed your band is signed to Little Heart Records. I am currently shopping our music to LOTS of indie labels. Any advice or insight you might have on this I would appreciate. Do you like your label? What do they do for you? Do you guys tour much? Everything that you can think of, pro's and con's I would love to hear.

BTW, I liked your page.

Snake Pit,

I liked your page as well.

My advice as far as labels is don't take an offer just because you get one. Drag the waters, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Sometimes indie labels are worse than majors in screwing artists, because it's the indie labels that are truly affected by piracy. Big labels can fight it or simply find other ways to make money, they have resources the indie labels don't. Indie labels have to be creative with contracts to make money.

One thing they do is offer to pay for your recording, with the agreement being that sales will make it back. However, they add an interest on to the loan which can make it difficult to ever pay the record off if the record doesn't take off. You'd be surprised how many popular artists are in debt to their label. So basically, unless you're confident you will sell out the loan quickly, you're better off paying for studio time yourself and shopping the record.

That's what we did on our deal and got hooked up with Little Heart. The label has two tiers, one being a trial run, little heart records group. One record deal, one year. You pay for everything yourself, but you get the label's prices which is much cheaper than if you went to disc makers or a printing company yourself. In return they get a cut of digital sales/streaming commission. If they like you, you get moved up to the main label which functions more like a normal label except they don't fuck artists.

In summation, tips.

Don't sign the first thing handed to you.

If you don't fully understand it, don't sign it.

If the contract has a longer page count than Moby Dick, avoid it unless there are a bunch of zeros involved.

Try to pay for as much of everything you can yourself as long as you're able, you don't want to owe those people money.

As far as shopping, be relentless but be professional. Don't chuck bricks with your demo attached into a label head's window.

Lastly, social media matters. Your Facebook like count matters to labels, fans, promoters, your mom's friends, etc. It's not a fair and honest way to gauge popularity, I've known many bands that bought likes, got signed, and flopped because their fan base wasn't real, but it is used regardless. It is a significant tool and is pretty much necessary these days.

@TeeJay,

Thanks for the info. I hear ya about the likes. I had one A&R girl give us shit because we didn't have enough likes. But in fairness we have only been playing the "game" since May. That's when we released better quality recordings, since then our likes have sky rocketed. We could use more facbook likes for sure, but 95% of our likes on there are all real fans. People that actually attend our shows from time to time. All of our twitter and reverbnation fans are just people playing the "game". Which you're right, those are not accurate estimations. But it is what it is, it makes people "look" better when you have thousands of fans. But come on, most of us know the trick, you like my page and I'll like yours. But if we have to get our FB likes us in order to look more attractive to labels, then come on everyone, like my page!!! ;) I'll like yours also!!! lol....
