Which Pattie Boyd inspired song is better. You all know the story, for those who don't, Pattie was the wife of George Harrison (The Beatles) whom George's close friend Eric Clapton fell in love with. Anyway they both wrote songs for her pretty much a year a part. A love story that any insecure teenage girl would love to have.

Layla is desperate, pleading. Something is romantic and admiring. I like Something for its warmth. But I love Layla for its longing.

Both are great for different moods.

I have to pick one? Layla.

I heard once that George wrote Something about another woman, but still, I'd pick Something over Layla. And I really love the Layla album. I mean it's in my top 5. That was the album that made me like Eric Clapton.

According to a quote by George on wikipedia, he was thinking of Ray Charles. But people assume it was Pattie so I am going with that.

The idea it was Pattie probably comes from the video they shot with the Beatles hanging out with their then wives/girlfriends. Paul with Linda, John with Yoko and Ringo with Maureen (whom George also slept with).

Something is a better love song because it is more about love of a woman, not just Pattie Boyd. Layla was definitely about Pattie but Clapton said he never loved her because he was obsessed with her. That will piss people off but he looked back and as a young man, he was not capable of ever loving a woman, just got intoxicated and desired them. Layla was more about Pattie flirting with Clapton to get her husband's attention in return, made Clapton obsessed with her. George ended up banging Ringo's wife anyway.

Even Something itself can border obsession. The songs are both about young men's perspective on love and being confused with obsession. Layla however, has that wonderful section with piano chords, Allman's slide, Clapton underneath playing a counter-slide, along with Clapton's acoustic guitar and Whitlock's piano. You can either like the first section or the second. I think the second is what Layla had over Something. George's slide guitar was phenomenal work though.
