Georgy Zhukov
Been listening to a few of their songs. Wonder if any of their fans can recommend me what albums I should check out. I only own one Beach Boys album. Try to take a guess what it is.
DR DOOM
Is it Holland?
Georgy Zhukov
Good guess. It is Pet Sounds.
DR DOOM
Heh, I thought it might be ( which explains why I said Holland of course, I was being obtuse)Album wise I only really know Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson's Smile/Smiley Smile, Carl and The Passions and Holland to be honest...I've always meant to delve deeper myself. luciusfunk
Pet Sounds is the only album I've listened to that wasn't a compilation.

Maybe that would give me an idea what the best produced rock and roll record would sound like. Fuck Phil Spector. Going by a list, along with Pet Sounds, Surfin' USA, Summer Days (Summer Nights) The Beach Boys Today! and All Summer Long are also recommended. DR DOOM
I'll keep that list in mind, cheers.
Crazyman
The Beach Boys seem to have released a thousand compilation albums of their old recordings. I think only a few, at most, would do.Anyway I've always wanted to get into some of the deeper stuff. Perhaps I will soon. I really liked their latest release that came out 2 years ago. Georgy Zhukov
Their story is inriguing. Mike Love being depicted as one of the great villains of rock and roll. The early days where the band was managed by songwriter/producer Murry Wilson, the father of Brian, Carl and Dennis. He was supposed to have been a total dick to his sons, especially Brian. And of course, Brian's mental illness and controversial treatment. Brian was probably the most musically talented, played a variety of instruments but bass seemed to have been his primary. I am not sure how they are as musicians. I know Dennis played drums and Carl played guitar. It seemed a lot of their music was done by session players. But they all sang well and Brian is one of the all time great songwriters and visionaries.
dalsh327
Mike is actually really nice, but my problem is that he turned it into a nostalgia act after Endless Summer came out and he can be kind of a blowhard. People got so pissed when he didn't want to keep the reunion going, but at their age and dealing with Brian is a monumental pain in the ass. Jeff Beck didn't have a great experience touring with Brian either. They were clocking in 3 1/2 - 4 hour concerts, but it has nothing to do with Brian being nice - he is. I just think after Carl died, Mike should have disbanded The Beach Boys. It's different than Axl's reasons why he wanted to keep going with GNR. They did have Love You which is good and the recent album was good. Dennis' Pacific Ocean Blue also really good. My favorites are Today & Sunflower, even though Smile, Smiley Smile, Pet Sounds and Summer Days/Summer Nights are all excellent. Dad, get the fuck out of the studio. I always wondered if this is the reason why Charles Manson lost his shit. On to one of my favorites. Georgy Zhukov
Thanks for all of that Dalsh. What else would you recommend? I forgot about the Manson thing. What is your opinion on the conspiracy that Dennis was murdered by the Manson Family? I think he had poor judgement of character.
RussTCB
This will always been my favorite tune by them:
Georgy Zhukov
This is my favorite so far. You don't often get Carl singing lead. I think he gave the best vocal performance out of all of them. Also Good Vibrations should not go unnoticed, one of the most expensive songs ever recorded. dalsh327
Thanks for all of that Dalsh. What else would you recommend? I forgot about the Manson thing. What is your opinion on the conspiracy that Dennis was murdered by the Manson Family? I think he had poor judgement of character. He was in a marina in the middle of the day diving for stuff that he threw in the water. If someone had killed him, they probably would have done it in his home or while he was staying on the boat.
supercool
drugs helped them a lot... they were a corny band (surfin' usa lol) before they started doing drugs. pet sounds, smile, surf's up are really great albums. check out dennis wilson's solo album pacific ocean blue, it can be considered as the best solo album by a wilson. Georgy Zhukov
Post more songs. Some good stuff here. I really liked Sail On, Sailor and I Can Hear Music. It seems Carl Wilson sang a lot more songs later on. Any good ones with Carl other than God Only Knows?
bacardimayne
I don't think drugs were as much to credit for the good beach boys albums so much as Brian Wilson being given more creative freedom on those albums. The surfshit that comprises most of their albums is the work of Mike Love.

Crazyman
I know someone else defended him a bit in this thread but Mike Love seems like the biggest douche ever. He just sounds like an asshole in every interview I've ever read of his.
