Power Metal appreciation thread

I used to be a big Angra fanboy when I was a kid learning how to play guitar. Not sure about how these guys are doing nowadays, they were BIG in Brazil and Japan some years ago. All these bands have at least one cool song each but I can't listen to Power Metal for more than half an hour. But yeah, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Angra, Shaman... Brings me back memories.

No idea what power metal is. Someone post something good.

But really think Iron Maiden with more drama and over the top operatic vibrato vocals.

Plus more dragons. Always need more dragons.

And less galloping riffs and more synthesizers.

Dragon metal

Worldofwarcraftmetal

You forgot Vikings and Elves.

So it's the like the stuff Tenacious D parodies.

Yeah but more wizards and shit. Potion metal is hardcore man.

But nothing's worse than Alestorm who are Pirate Metal.

EDIT: Apparently the band believes their genre to be "True Scottish Pirate Metal". :rofl-lol:

Manowar, although they're not really power metal

I can deal with Savatage and Fates Warning....some old school Helloween

Aren't Manowar THE power metal band? Edited by Johnny Drama

power metal started from traditional metal(mostly roots in the band rainbow) and the NWOBHM movement. in the beginning most power metal bands were just speed metal with fantasy type of lyrics. some bands in the mid 80s were more rooted in thrash, than speed metal. in the late 80s and into the 90s the speed and thrash influences faded for the most faded and evolved into what is now defined as power metal.

power metal has been broken down basically into american power metal which is more thrash oriented and european power metal which more neoclassical/speed. power metal has branched out and continued to evolve mixing with other sub genres like melodic death metal(wintersun).

here is a couple of examples:

US thrash influenced

euro speed metal influenced

more progessive power:

power metal with melodic death

Does amon amarth count as power metal?

they are just melodic death metal, but the do have a tinge of power metal in their sound. they are heavily influenced by iron maiden which heavily influenced the growth of power metal. you can hear a lot of iron maiden in the guitar work of amon amarth.

to me a power metalish amon amarth is kalmah. they mix melodic death and power metal pretty good. some songs and albums more and less.

the best band to do it for me anyway is wintersun and early children of bodom.
