Welcome to the Jungle - Live Era video

Hey Marc,

I have some random questions about the Welcome to the Jungle Live Era video. I am hoping you can help to answer them:

  1. The whole video is focused on Axl, Slash and Duff. There are VERY short clips of Matt, Gilby and Dizzy and there are NO clips of Steven or Izzy. Was Axl alright with so much focus on Slash and Duff at that time?
  2. Because Dizzy 'stuck by' Axl during the period the video was made, why was there so little focus on him?
  3. Jeff Richter who directed the video hadn't worked with GNR previously, but was chosen for it. He also hasn't worked with the band since (as far as I saw). What connection did he have with the band at the time and why was he ultimately chosen for the job?
  4. Did you talk to any of the guys in the band about this video? Did anyone give you their opinion on it?

Thanks Marc

Axl, Slash, and Duff were the only ones left from the AFD lineup in the band and are going to be the ones most recognized. I think that was done by the director. I don't know why they chose Jeff but it could have something to do with his history. I know there is a lot going on in that video with all those news clips and maybe they wanted someone that could do that well. Axl was the one who brought over a copy for me to see before it came out. I know he was happy with it.

That's good that he gave the band their due on that record. Was this before things really took a turn?

Thanks Marc.... I asked those questions because as cooker just partially referenced, it seems like although the band had run its course Axl still seemed to respect Slash and Duff enough to still 'share' the limelight and acknowledge them. All in all I think the WTTJ Live Era video is fantastic. I think it captures the insanity of the band during the UYI era (there are no AFD era clips in the video) perfectly. Ending with Rodney King's famous 'can't we all get along' quote is great. I get the feeling there was still a chance for the band members to remain courteous to each other at that time, but as the years passed things only got worse.

I believe that if you had released your book back then it would have been welcomed by Axl.

That record would have been a good time to put out my book. The only problem was I didn't push it because my agent still had it back then. The truth is I didn't push it in 2006 when I met the people that put it out. They pushed it when they saw what I had and I was just happy to finally get it out there.

Sad it worked out they way it did. The person I was trying he impress the most was the only one who wasn't so impressed. I think what through me off the most was back when I put the book together Steven and Izzy were out of them band and there was bad blood there but when Axl looked at the book, he didn't have any problem with them being in the book. I guess Slash being in the book was a whole different story. This really has more to do with Axl's anger with Slash. I thought Axl would just let it be because is was very important history on the birth of the band and it really didn't matter when it came out. It was a book about 1985/1986 and no matter what helps the current band that was in play.

Thanks Marc,

Was Axl still in the ballpark of trying to get Slash back at that point? Just curious as to when the door in his mind officially closed.

Yes and the door was still open for Slash to come back at that point and also to work on a few songs and far as I know up to 2006. I think that door may have closed sometime in 2007 maybe when Slash's book came out. 2008 was for sure a big no way.

Sorry Marc, but I think the door was locked before that. Slash went to Axl house back in 2005. And Axl didn´t wanna talk to him.

i think marc would know and this is new insight i wasn't aware of

seems like 2007/2008 was the worst year of axl's life considering he mentioned that on jimmy kimmel - probably his failure record and slash's book out same year

It just doesn´t add up. If Axl was open to work with Slash until 2007. Then why back in 2005 Axl refused to speak with Slash when he went to his house? Why the next day or so Axl issued a statement saying that Slash badmouthed Duff, Weiland and Sorum? On top of that when GN´R perfomed in Vegas in 2001 Slash wanted to attend the show. But he was not allowed to do it. Nor Axl seemed to be willing to talk to him before or after that show.

As far as I could make out, Slash showed up drunk in the middle of the night, he only saw Beta, began badmouthing Duff and Scott (and Matt iirc) in front of Beta. Beta refused to let him in, maybe she said Axl wasn't at home. But I think Axl only heard about it all afterwards. That's how I read it, anyway.

And then there's the story about Slash being refused to the GNR show in Vegas, but I doubt someone asked Axl if they could let Slash in.

To me, it always seems to be the entourage refusing Slash to enter.

On the other hand, if Axl wanted to talk to Slash at any given time, he would have done so.

The difference was by 2001, Slash had already painted his side of the story which didn't make Axl look so good and Axl didn't agree on and said that Slash was a lier.

So the door was still open for Slash to work on some songs but first Slash would have to hold a press event and apologize and set the record straight according to what Axl thinks happened between them.

I agree that Slash should have apologized for a lot of the bad mouthing that he did but as far as Slash is concerned some of the things that they disagree on, there are 2 different stories and from different perspectives and the only way that will get worked out between them is with some good Counseling. So until they agree on some professional Counseling nothing will ever happen between them.

Marc,

in your opinion, had Slash apologized and played on a few songs, do you think he would have done some shows with Axl and GnR as they were at the time?? Was that possibility ever talked about??

Reading this thread made me think about something.

Why hasn't there ever been a reality tv show about bands that have broken up and doing a therapy type thing?

Even if the bands didn't resolve their issues or at least become friends again. Fans would get more of an insight as to why so many break ups happened with their favorite bands.

There is no way slash would have come back to play on a few songs it would have had to be all or nothing.

Interesting, do you think it was ever close to happening?? Did Slash ever consider it seriously??
