Best / Favorites of the Buckethead Pikes

Recommended Posts

I realize there is already a thread for favorite BH albums, one for favorite BH songs and also a general discussion about the new Pikes as they were/are being released. However, I haven't seen one specifically dedicated to discussing the best / favorite Pikes...so here goes...

Other than his contributions to CD, I'm new to the world of BH. I started exploring his discography about a week or so ago...and now I'm severely addicted (haven't listened to anything but BH since). I used the recommendations on this forum as a guide to help narrow down the selections at first, but now I'm just trying to absorb as much as possible and downloading (iTunes/Amazon) the ones I like as I go.

So what are your recommendations on the Pikes?

Is there a consensus on what the best Pikes are?

Which are the best of the more straight-forward rock/metal (for example, I haven't listened to the entire Pikes that they are on but I do like the songs The Shores of Molokai, Blind Cyclops, The Coats of Claude, Worms for the Garden, etc.)?

Which are the best of the more ambient/mellow/avant garde, etc.?

Also, not related to the Pikes, but does anyone know why Population Override is not available for download on iTunes/Amazon?

Thanks.

For mellow stuff, start with: Pike 13, Rise of the Blue Lotus, Wishes, Pearson's Square, Pike 15,

For rock/metal, start out with: 3' Clearance, Racks, Worms for the Garden, Thank You Ohlinger's, Telescape, Look Up There, The Pit, Forgotten Library

Pikes that are kinda weird but awesome nonetheless: Halls of Dimension, City of Ferris Wheels, Outpost, Frankensteins Monsters Blinds, The Shores of Molokai

I would add The Coats of Claude (#45) and Claymation Courtyard (#51) to the list of good, solid rock/metal Pikes. I really like the title track on #45 and all of #51.

wtf is a pike?

Q. What is Buckethead Pikes?

A. A kiosk shop set up in the park that carries particular wedges not readily available at the toystore.

And now he's up to #68 of these albums.

A Message from W. Axl Rose

LISBON, Portugal--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 2004--Guns N' Roses will not be performing as scheduled at Rock In Rio - Lisbon.

The band has been put in an untenable position by guitarist Buckethead and his untimely departure. During his tenure with the band Buckethead has been inconsistent and erratic in both his behavior and commitment - despite being under contract - creating uncertainty and confusion and making it virtually impossible to move forward with recording, rehearsals and live plans with confidence. His transient lifestyle has made it impossible for even his closest friends to have nearly any form of communication with him whatsoever. Last time I talked to Bucket, he called to tell me he had bought a bootleg DVD off EBay and how proud he was to be in Guns and how impressed he was with everyone's performance. Then, in February we got word from Brain that Bucket had called him and said he was back in Guns!? Apparently, according to Bucket he had been "Gone" but had turned himself around and was really excited to do Rio-Lisbon and a European tour. Somewhere in the following month things changed once again. According to those who have actually spoken with Buckethead it appears his plans were to secure a recording contract with Sanctuary Records which I encouraged my management to make available to him, quit GN'R and to use his involvement in the upcoming Guns release to immediately promote his individual efforts...Nice guy!

There is not a member of this camp that is not hurt, upset and ultimately disappointed by this event, and more to the point - if not this individual, certainly this individual's choices. Regardless of anyone's opinions of me and what I may or may not deserve, clearly the fans, individuals in this band, management, crew and our support group do not deserve this type of treatment. We as a whole, definitely feel that we afforded Bucket every accommodation perhaps so much so that it may be that we or more precisely, I may have done Guns a disservice and unintentionally allowed Guns to be put in this position.

On behalf of Guns N' Roses and myself I apologize to the fans who planned to see us at Rock In Rio - Lisbon. The festival and its tradition mean a lot to me personally and I sincerely do not enjoy being robbed by one of our own of the opportunity to be the first artist to play it for the third time. I would also like to express my gratitude to those who chose to embrace Buckethead's role in Guns and support our new line up. We greatly appreciate Bucket's contributions and remain open to "discussions" as there are obviously several issues to resolve. In the meantime rather than dwelling on the negative, Guns will be moving forward and surprisingly (without giving away any details) this unfortunate set of circumstances may have given us the opportunity to take our recording that one extra step further. Regardless we hope to announce a release date within the next few months.

Sincerely,

W. Axl Rose

The Festival will shortly announce the name of a new headliner to perform with EVANESCENCE, KINGS OF LEON and XUTOS E PONTAPES amongst others

Guest Gunns

And the best part of Buckethead is his still independent pretty much and doesn't use the GNR name to promote himself

I have always thought that quote is interesting in terms of how some previous and current Gnr members are relatable to the very notion axl is accusing bucket of.

Maybe people surrounding Axl gave him wrong information about Buckethead

Rainy Days

@ Sixes - I hadn't noticed this before when listening in my car, but when listening on headphones there is a buzzing noise that can be heard during some of the quieter parts on Rainy Days (especially on Light Through the Fog). Do you hear this also? I downloaded the whole Pike from iTunes. Just curious if it is audible to everyone or if it's just an issue with my downloaded copy? Are the Pikes recordings of inferior quality/production as compared to his other studio albums?

I haven't noticed it but maybe it's a rain effect or something like that?

I haven't noticed any production issues with any of the Pikes..but I download them straight from his Bandcamp in 320kbps rather than through iTunes. There could be a mastering error on the iTunes version, though I can't say for certain.
