MyGNR's "Top 10 GN'R Songs" Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Or are there too many songs for the poll to allow?

This!

I tried to do it, but it just didn't work out. Initially I was going to just have everyone submit a rank-ordered top ten and count up the votes, but Russ suggested the current format, which is to have everyone post a top ten, then create subsequent polls based around the results - this will hopefully keep a bit more suspense, create more discourse (people trying to make arguments for/against certain songs, for example), and so on and so forth. My only concern is that dragging out the polls on a weekly basis would take nine weeks for results, and people might get bored/lose interest; alternately, twice a week or three times a week, maybe not enough people will have time to vote. Maybe we can split it up so that each poll you can only vote for five songs, so that the polls are cut in half timewise (so for the first week when there are ten titles to choose from, you can only vote for five, and then the next poll those top five tracks are reflected, and you can only vote for two or three). We can figure that out later on I guess.

My top 10:

1. Prostitute

2. Madagascar

3. Catcher In The Rye

4. There Was A Time

5. Oh My God

6. Pretty Tied Up

7. Locomotive

8. You Could Be Mine

9. Coma

10. Estranged from Live Era

Nice list, although I want to clarify that in regards to your inclusion of Estranged from Live Era, due to the constraints of this format I think any vote for a song will count towards its studio cut. For example, I'll probably include Street of Dreams on my list. I'm really voting for The Blues from '01/'02, not the final track, but I know that listing it this way will split more votes, as we'll have some people voting for one version and some for the other, and the votes will be unfairly reflected in the final tally.bSo, feel free to specify live renditions or b-sides or whatever, but ultimately I'm going to count any mention of a song title toward the studio rendition. If someone votes for the Yesterdaze acoustic demo I'll probably count it as a vote towards Yesterdays. :)

But hey, if you're voting for a specific live rendition feel free to post the link to the video in here to convince people of the song's merit! I know the studio cut of SoD is a bit cheesy thanks to the production, but I'd wager this to anyone who says it's a generic track:

My top 10:

1. Prostitute

2. Madagascar

3. Catcher In The Rye

4. There Was A Time

5. Oh My God

6. Pretty Tied Up

7. Locomotive

8. You Could Be Mine

9. Coma

10. Estranged from Live Era

Also, please post your lists in the other thread...as I said, I need to have an efficient way to tally up votes later on, so if people are posting their lists in here, they might be missed. I imagine we'll end up getting tons of replies over the course of a month and I don't want to risk anyone's votes being lost in the shuffle. :) For now, I went ahead and pasted your top ten in the voting thread, but as time and replies go on, I won't have the ability to do this, so please everyone make sure you post yours in the right topic! Thanks!

Believe me, the final outcome contains mostly CD songs and fucking covers from Spaghetti, UYI...

Btw i'm surprised cuz my own list doesn't contains a single song from UYI 1...

Oh and i'm waiting for the top10 ultimate LIVE performances thread :headbang:

ok guys, I'm in need of clarification, is it MY FAVORITE or what I feel are their best songs? Because that is really a different question. An unbiased poll of gnr's best songs would have to be something along the lines of this:

1. Jungle

2. SCOM

3. Paradise City

4. November rain

5. Patience

6. You could be mine

7. Don't Cry

8. Civil War

9. Estranged

10. Mr. Brownstone

The order might be up for debate, but all ten of these are probably gnr's "best songs". But that is not my personal favs. Do you understand what I'm saying?

This will be fun! I'm going to have to think it over. Maybe one month is indeed a bit too long. Although there might be a lot of posters who are on vacation and won't be viewing the forum for a couple of weeks ? Don't know.

It's your personal top 10. Personally if I was to try and make an objective list, the overproduced shit album version of don't cry would be nowhere near the top. Edited by bacardimayne

it's your favorite top ten. i know sometimes you have to weigh historical perspective in there too, but don't be afraid to list personal favorites over songs that are 'objectively' great. i probably won't include WTTJ on my list because frankly, i burnt myself out on it and i still love the song but it's not in my top ten rotation these days.

I initially thought a month would be a good way to get it more exposure and reach people beyond the regulars of our forum, but I think two weeks is going to be better. I'll change the date later.

I don't like the methodology. I will probably end up having to choose between my 13th and my 22nd favourite GNR song for the top spot or something along those lines.

If you're going to really get busy and do something large scale and long term there are other options that I consider more interesting. For example you could give songs points according to their position in the top 10. Or you can get people to give ratings to the songs like in this thread and then tally up the numbers.

I had to have the Big 4 so to speak of Coma, Locomotive, November and Estranged - no way I can leave any one of them out, they go all over the place between them. Would've liked My Michelle and Jungle too but I prefer Nightrain off Appetite, got superior ''ballady'' types to SCOM and couldn't ignore the two CD piledrivers and diverse journeys of CITR and Prozzy. Civil War is just a no brainer, wanted one of Izzy's gems in Dust N' Bones and Breakdown is such a strange track with some of my fave lyrics I had to throw it in. A lot of UYI but I do enjoy the more progressive tracks even tho the rockers Guns produced were some of the most raw streaks you'd ever want.

Like many others said, "this was hard." I was forced to leave off everything from CD, even though I really like CD. My reasoning is that Estranged didn't even make my cut, and as far as epics go, Estranged is better than TWAT and the other epics from CD. My favs from CD are (in no order) TWAT, Sorry, and This I Love. But This I Love and Sorry are not better than Don't Cry, November Rain, Patience (which I also left Patience off), so how can I realistically put TIL or Sorry on my list? As much as I like CD (and I really do), when it comes to my 10 favorite gnr songs, it's all classic stuff. I guess I'm no hipster :)

On a side note, Jungle didn't make my cut, which is ironic for me. Because I consider Jungle to be the best hard rock song ever, but it didn't even make my top ten gnr songs. :( But at the end of the day I went with the songs that I listen to the most, so it is what it is.

glad to see that not everyone is voting for Coma and TWAT...

Never understood your dislike of Coma my man. It's heavy, it's epic, great solos, great vocals, great lyrics, and its really long. What's not to like???? :)

I wouldn't say I dislike it really but I do find it incredibly overrated. The ending coda of lyrics though are some of Axl's best and can't be touched really...

Although it will come off as a contradiction since I put 3 "long" songs in my top 10, I've always thought people put Coma on a pedestal is because it was so long....long doesn't always mean good...(that's what she said?)...I feel the same way about TWAT...the guitars are glorious throughout the song but the lyrics are cringeworthy, especially the teardrop bridge...
