President Obama: We can act to prevent a potential act of genocide

President Obama explains U.S. humanitarian efforts to save Iraqi civilians trapped on a mountaintop and why he ordered targeted air strikes against terrorist targets.

Barack Obama has authorized the military to make targeted airstrikes in Iraq to protect American personnel, the U.S. president said in a statement on Thursday.

This comes as the U.S. began an effort to drop humanitarian aid to trapped Iraqis on Thursday, while denying reports that American forces had conducted airstrikes in Kurdish territory.

"We intend to stay vigilant and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or our facilities anywhere in Iraq," Obama said, authorizing targeted airstrikes if Islamic State militants advance further toward the Kurdish capital Arbil or threaten Americans anywhere in the country.

The airstrikes would be the first carried out by the U.S. military in Iraq since the withdrawal of its forces at the end of 2011.

"The United States cannot and should not intervene every time there's a crisis in the world but we must act now because innocent people face the prospect of violence on a horrific scale," he said. "We can act carefully and responsibility to prevent a potential act of genocide."

"There is no decision that I take more seriously than the use of military force," Obama added.

Obama said the U.S. is consulting with the United Nations and other countries who have called for action, but added that he "will not allow the United States to be dragged into fighting another war in Iraq, so even as we support Iraqis, American combat troops will not be returning to fight."

I hope fucks these ISIS cunts with the long cock of the Stars and Stripes. Just get em, fuck em and flee.

I think that's the idea. ISIS apparently are causing over 30,000 people to starve in Northern Iraq....that was the final straw.

They should be (hopefully) wiped out in a matter of weeks...especially since the methods they use allows for them to be easily exposed from above.

That's not the idea at all.

No? What's the idea then?

The mandate he gave to the armed forces was more limited than that of his predecessors, focused mainly on dropping food and water. But he also authorized targeted airstrikes “if necessary” against Islamic radicals advancing on the Kurdish capital of Erbil and others threatening to wipe out thousands of non-Muslims stranded on a remote mountaintop.

This is an extremely limited action. ISIS is not a bunch of thugs hiding in caves. They are organized and they control significant portions of Iraq and Syria. They ain't going anywhere.

If they want to get rid of ISIS they need boots on the ground. They control cities, oil refineries, banks. It will take more than air strikes. It could be limited US military personnel assisting Iraqi and Kurish forces in offensives to retake these key areas. Or they need to go all out.

Isn't that a good thing when it comes to fighting them?

Yes. That's exactly my point. ISIS is under the delusion that they can fight a standard war with the U.S. We'll wipe the floor with them.

He is not exactly, ISIS material, Len: drinks like a fish, listens to hip hop and has had more problems with his car than Ayrton Senna.

If the Americans are bombing Iraq then that means the bombs will probably end up in Finland.

I think you're confusing the US armed forces with Ryanair. :)

Well, they have the same grasp of geography.

What? No, not at all. The US has made no indication that they want to fight a standard war or any other kind of war with ISIS.

Wipe the floor with them? How many times do we need to invade this country before we accept the limits to our military power? Again, and I have no idea how this is confusing, these air raids are not intended to eliminate ISIS.

Edit: I do wish shades would get in here, because hilarity would ensue. Shades will correctly identify that these are limited strikes that will have no real impact. Then he'll wrongly suggest that Obama should nut up and take out ISIS completely. And then KK will have to defend Obama against attacks from shades when shades is saying Obama should do the very thing KK mistakenly thought he was doing in the first place.
