Places of interest in Japan?

Mendez

Recommended Posts

I'm going in December and I'm making a list of places to go to while I'm there and help would be great. I'm going all over Japan.

Any recommendations?

Edit: could be anything really. A restaurant, landmark, beach, temple, a market, a street, a tree you thought looked cool etc

While Tokyo is pretty cool, it's not one of my favorite places. When it comes to cities in general, I prefer Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima.

In all of these places you have to eat 'Okonomiyaki', which is simply fantastic (well, japanese cuisine in general is pretty good).

In Hiroshima you can visit the peace memorial park and also go on a day trip to Miyajima, which is a very nice place with some temples.

Osaka and especially Kyoto also offer a lot of cultural stuff, i.e. the Temple of the Golden Pavillion.

How long are you planning to stay there?

Well a nice day in Tokyo would be taking the train out and starting in Shinjuku. Go to the Metropolitan Government Building. It's an awesome looking building, and it has a FREE observation deck on the 52nd floor. You get up there and have this breathtaking view of Tokyo all laid out before you...buildings as far as you can see. That's to give you a sense of scale.

Go back down to the street and enjoy the shops and stuff. Maybe play some video games and go in a photo booth at a game center. Hope back on the train and go to Shibuya, the cultural heart of Tokyo. Cross the crosswalk by the station and see millions of people. More shopping and food there. Walk to Harajuku, where lots of hip young kids hang out, and on Sundays weird kids like to dress up in costumes in front of Yoyogi Park.

Back on the train, go to Akihabara. Electric Town. Any kind of video game, anime, manga, action figure, porn, school girl costumes...you'll find it here. The "geek" center of Tokyo.

For more of the old school charm, go to Asakusa, for Sensoji Temple.

For really amazing temples and shrines, take the train about an hour and a half west, to a town on the bay called Kamakura. Go see the Great Buddha statue....over 800 years old. You've seen pictures of it for sure....you can actually go inside it.

Those are my favorite places in the Tokyo area. As for food? Good lord...where to start? As long as you're not vegetarian, you're gonna be very very happy.

2-3 weeks most likely and thanks for the input!

Anyone else?

Lexington Queen nightclub in Tokyo. Tell them Alex James sent you. New Lex Edo or The Lex now after the Yakuza shut it down for a while. I went to a weird Beatles theme bar too. I was smoky in there for sure.

A guy from the band Blur? Why

In his book he says how he went there every time they went to Tokio and he was friends with the management. They said if any of his friends come they'd give them free drinks. So he said "Tell them Alex James sent you" and they'll give you some drinks. I was too drunk to try and could barely hear myself talk but it's worth a shot might end up in vip with models.

Something tells me I'd feel right at home if I ever get to visit Japan. I don't look like them, but we share the same passions. Also, I really want to fuck asian. (chick not dude)

Learning japanese though...it will be a challenge I suspect. Worth it though? idk. Seems like they can party pretty hard in really small spaces. I respect that. Also: is it really like you see in porn? asians with big tits and as soon as you pull your unit out it gets all pixilated looking? So many questions. I don't know nothin'.

Tokyo! Tokyo! Tokyo!

It's like London, but in Japan!

But less diverse.

True, you do not see many fellow brothers there.

If you go to Thailand you get both of those for the price of one.

I am currently learning Japanese - just about to enter my second year this very month. I wanted to tour the Samurai castles (Himeji-Jo etc) and other places of historic interest since I am interested in the history of the region. My plans got derailed a bit because of other things in life, but I will eventually do it. It is a very interesting subject. The use of particles (wa, ga, o) is very different from western languages, as is, the way they announce topics at the start of every conversation. The usage of verbs at the end of sentences reminds me a bit of Latin, and the pronunciation system is fairly easy to grasp.

No thanks, I'm not interesed in ladyboys. Just chicks. And not from thailand. We have a bunch of chicks from Thailand where I live. I'm specifically interesed in fucking a hot japanese asian chick, and I'm also interesed in the japanese culture. The way I see it, I'll need to learn their language if I really want to take in what seem to be a magical place. Very different from what I know.

Somewhere in Roppongi there's a bar that had drinking challenge I took down like 30 beers in an hour. Immortality. There's pic and the wasted was ere!? I also went some park that was like Marilyn Manson convention and cos play going on. I bought a neon blue Sony discman. I went to a designer outlet with a view of mt Fuji. And sat in hot tub in the mountains watching Japanese game shows. But also I had a really bad teeth chattering fever. I got painkillers that made it all better. It's not an easy place to go. No English on subway means lost all the time. I went on this weird pirate ship too on a lake.

Do you not think It is a bit shallow a reason to visit a country? If you want 'sex tourism', Thailand truly is your place - or even, Vietnam.

But I just said in my previous post I'm interested in the culture as well.

That's fuckin' amazing. You should be a tour guide. Writing books is nice and all, but tour guiding your way through the world is your true calling imo. Well...one of them until you get bored and start a new adventure.

I don't know I didn't find it that interesting. It's very conservative. There are used girls panties in vending machines in the subway stations. Other than that they got McDonald's. I suppose TV was weird. It's basically like Black Rain but without Yakuza.

normally I just stay in Holiday inn and watch HBO and drink the mini bar. Bangkok is dirty but Phuket resorts or Koh Samui are nice. You can really go Chevy Chase there. Pretend to play golf but really your just drinking piña coladas by the pool.

I've bought "used" school girl panties from a vending machine exactly once. It was in 2001, and it was in the adult section of a local video rental place. I couldn't believe the urban legends were true, so I had to buy them. 200 yen, so about 2 bucks. I don't think they were really used. I smelled really hard too....nothing.

Since then, I've never seen them. I bet they were more prevalent back in the day, but I think it's a thing of the past. They most certainly would never be available at train stations.

I recently stumble upon a little shack in a rice field that had actual porno and vibrators in a vending machine. It looked abandoned though. I wasn't about to spend the money for a crappy old DVD for the novelty of it. What a weird find though.

Also, there are beer and cigarette machines everywhere, and back when I first came here, all you had to do is put your money in, and out comes the beer and cigs. Can you imagine how instantly kids would have those cleaned out in the States? It was just unthinkable to me. In recent years though, you need to scan a special ID to prove you're of age. So that took all the fun out of it.

No need for a machine though. There's 24 hour convenient stores everywhere. And they sell liquor. I don't mean watered down shit either...I mean I can walk to a 7-11 5 minutes from my house, at 3AM, buy a bottle of Jack Daniels, and just start drinking on the street. Totally legal here. Probably just par for the course for Asia and most of the world....but that shit would be considered insane in the States. They really have a stick up their ass.
