You can put any album out you want under any label (barring copyright and contract issues) but you have to find a means of distribution and promotion. A major established label can handle distribution and promotion. Axl could create any record label he wanted and release an album under that label (provided he wasn't obligated by contract to any other label) but he would have to spend his own money and find a way to distribute it and promote it, unless he found some other company to handle that. So, he'd be back at square one.


It's not about needing a name to release something under. It's about the millions you need to get it out there and make it noticed.

Artists having a vanity label can be a good thing if they sign an artist that winds up having hits, which was the case with Bad Company and Eminem. Trent Reznor had Nothing Records, which was still under Interscope so it's not avoiding the Iovines (or David Geffens) of the world.

Supposedly Axl was producing Mank Rage after Paul Tobias left, but I don't know how true that is.
