downzy
"Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves. Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers. If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.”Yeah, anyone who already has success and fame through the traditional label system can do this. As for anyone else, not so sure about that Thom.... Pretty sure that were you not a member of Radiohead, a band that owes much of its success to that same label system, nobody would give a fuck about your sophomore album.

username
I've never been a fan of Radiohead at all, but it's incredibly cool when artists just do this. I wonder if it's going to be a real shift in the business eventually where the real money isn't in records anymore so artists will just make them for the sake of the art and earn their money touring. It's been like that for eight to ten years.

It's been like that for eight to ten years. That's true, but the trend of just giving albums away for free (or, in U2's case, violently forcing it on you) isn't that widely spread yet. Yes, I know Radiohead has done it before. But not that many artists have. I wonder if that's going to be the standard eventually though. My point was in response to your point about making albums for the sake of art and making their money touring. The lead guitarist in my old band had a brother who was in a band signed to Sony here in Canada. They sold over 50k copies of their debut album and still made nothing from it. All of the money went back to paying back the record label. They did make $400k touring one year, but when you factor in touring costs and management percentages, the individual members made very little. I wouldn't call making an album available for download on your iCloud "violently forcing it on you" but, yeah, let's go with the flow right? downzy
Finally got around to giving this a listen. Terrible. It's as if York has forgotten how to write a song and is just making it as he goes along. He really seems to hate the concepts of hook and melody, the very things that made him wealthy and famous.
