I have a crazy idea in my head, I need help!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

First of all, I am a very traditional guy. I like two guitars, drums, bass, and vocals. Give me some kick- ass, raw rock n' roll! However, I appreciate a lot and some of my favorite kinds of music are things like ChiDem and Pink Floyd stuff like Animals. So although I like a lot of rock, I always envisioned myself playing stripped down stuff with my Gibson. You know, that whole stereotypical rock n' roll sorta thing.

Problem is, I have been dreaming of this for years. Finding people to play with is really hard, and its a massive commitment. I am not abandoning my dream of being in a rock band, but I NEED to do something musical now for myself.

I thought of acoustic- folk sort of things, and that can work. But yesterday I had a crazy idea- electronic, ambient music with prog and rock elements. I only played guitar but in this day and age it seems computers offer so much in terms of music. I downloaded FL studios and have been playing around with it. It seems I can actually make some cool music by myself. I have been thinking of this nonstop for the past 12 hours, and have been watching tutorials on youtube. It is just so overwhelming, but I am determined to make this work. Do any of you have any experience with this sort of thing? There is a lot to learn! I never thought I would want to make electronic music, but I am already getting some cool sounds. I would layer lots of guitar and other real instruments on top of this stuff with a few vocals, as well.

Hey man, I read this a while ago and have been mulling it over. I live about 30~ 45 mins from Lansing, which is a little bit of a hike yes, but not too bad if you want to jam. I am actually in the process of starting a new project. I have a venue that I have an open invite to play whenever I want. My other band started out there, but (some members) feel like it is beneath them to play. I like the party and fun atmoshpear when I play there (I have been playing there with a few different bands over the years). But anyways, I'm thinking of just a small little party band, nothing too serious. Just something to scratch the musical itch that we share. If we get other gigs as well, then thats great, but thats not really my focas. It's just nice to have a venue where you can go and actually put on a performance for an audience.

As far as music and styles and what not, I'm a traditionalist as well. 2 guitars, drums, and bass are all you really need. In my other band, I do all of the lead guitar stuff, but I'm actually wanting to do more of dual lead thing. My younger brother is already down to start something, he can play drums, bass, and guitar. But I think he is probably going to be behind the sticks for this project. I don't really want a full time singer (because they are always either a let down, if they are not very good, or if they are good, a massive pain in the ass). I'd rather do more of a singer by commitie approach, basically if you have a song you want to sing, we will play it and you sing. I have 5~10 songs that I can sing pretty well, so its a decent starting point. But I don't really "like" to sing, but I realize I am going to have to do a lions share of it in this project. So I will only sings songs, that I know I can sing well, so unfortunatly that leaves most zeppelin and gnr out, cause I can't sing that stuff. But I do want to learn some of those songs, and open them up for kareoke with a live band. So if someome wants to get up and sing (which thats what people LOVE to do anyways), we can let them get up there and not hit the high notes lol. Better them than me. But that will make it interesting for people, the chance to get up and sing SCOM or whatever behind a live band.

I don't want to be "just a cover band" either, what I really want to do is have some killer jams that we work into songs. Which improv jamming is one of my strong suits. But thats why I want another killer guitar player, so I can let them do some leads and I will think think about the melody/lyrics/vocals and what not. Which is something that I never do in my other band. The singer always plays rhythm and sings, and I always play lead, which is great. But I do miss playing with another guitar player that can really get down.

Again, I'm not looking to take the world by storm, or become the next anyone. But if you are looking for some folks to jam with, and possibly get out and play in public, but yet keep it fun and simple, thats what I do. :)
