A shitty demo I made, what do you think?

Recommended Posts

I was bored tonight and wrote a little blues tune. I only spent like 30 minutes recording it because my neighbors would be pissed. Lots of mistakes, my voice is terrible, yadda yadda but what do you guys think? Any potential?

At least you get to hear my new Les Paul!

You sound good man. I have been dying to play with another guitar player that can play leads and can bring interesting riffs and what not to the table. I have been playing in clean rhythm/ dirty lead combo bands for most of my life, and quite frankly I'm sick of it. It's nice on one hand because I have been allowed to just be myself and go for broke whenever I feel like it. But the downside of that is the clean guitar is essentially pointless, doesn't really add much to the overall feel of the songs. Which I'm not telling you "go buy an OD pedal" or anything else, not implying anything lol. Even if you play "clean" you still add lead parts to the songs, which is exactly my point.

The reason why I'm saying all this is because I have been producing and mixing my other bands album at the moment. And I swear to God, on most songs I could literally take her guitar out and you would not even miss it in the final mix. Clean rhythm guitars are nice on certain songs, but when its an "all the time thing" they are boring as piss imo. But like I said, she is strictly rhythm, so its not like she adds all that much to the overall sound, especially with open chords. The band I played in years ago, had a guy playing an acoustic electric, so again, same shit. So I'm excited to see someone else holding a les paul, and really showing what it can do, lol.

Oh yeah, dude. This is just a soft blues tune I did.

Don't you worry, I like my shit loud and full of balls. I may have only just really started playing Les Pauls in the past year as my number ones (I've always been obsessed with them, but it was a financial thing). I played a Strat for close to 8 years primarily and I love my Strat, but nothing beats a Lester

I know how to use a Les Paul though, so it's all good! And I need an OD for sure, I just spent $$$$ on my amp and guitar so I won't get my Bogner pedal soon =( I'll get a cheaper one asap though

I guess for me it boils down to the fact that I don't really have anything to prove anymore. I'm not trying to be famous, not trying to be a rockstar, I'm just trying to have fun and make good music. This new band, that we are in the process of forming, is me trying to take all the BS out of the music.

This new band, will be my fifth band that I have started. In the course of these experiences I have learned a lot, sometimes what not to do. As soon as you play a great show and people are really enjoying what you are doing, egos start going out of control. Even on the small time level, its crazy, I can't imagine a gnr type level. Which I have been guilty of some of this in the past as well, but I have learned that at the end of the day, it doesn't mean jack shit.

I'm not trying to talk myself up, but after every show I have played within the last year, I have gotten some really amazing compliments. One guy compared me to Randy Rhoades, another guy compared me to Stevie Ray. Which all that is nice, don't get me wrong, but what is it really worth? Sure it makes you feel good about yourself, but being compared to "so and so" isn't going to pay my bills, or put food on the table. They are just words, nice words, but still only words. But the effect those words had on some of my bandmates was insane. Because lots of guys would come up to me, and want to talk to me, after our shows, my singer and bass player would throw hissy fits. Which boggled my mind. It's not like women are throwing their panties at me, its just dudes wanting to talk rock and roll, kinda like we do here. I'm a nice guy, and I love to talk music, so I enjoyed it. But it's not just me, my singer always had guys talking to her after the show as well, mostly because they wanted to do things to her, so she had more than her fair share of fans as well. It was really the bass player that couldn't handle it, envy is a dirty little bitch.... To the point that any song he sang, he would end early so that I didn't get another solo. Or would puprosly start the next verse when I was supposed to solo. My singer even started doing that as well. Then at our last couple of shows (we recorded everything, so I've been listening to them on play back), and our singer will give the drummer, bass player, herself, and everyone else tons of praise for their contributions on just about every song. But I might get acknoledged once the entire gig. It reminded me of the UYI tours, when Axl wouldn't introduce Slash half of the time. It's like fuck man, you can't even acknoledge that I'm here, your that fucking jealous? But I hold my head high, because I played my fucking ass off on the album. We all played great, singer sang great, everything is good. But on a personal note I am fucking proud of how I played. It's all been documented and recorded, and I am even going to get it pressed on vinyl. So at the end of the day, I am just going to let my playing do the talking for myself, thats all that matters to me anyways.

But anyways, my point is I have had my share of admiration or fans appreciation or whatever the hell you want to call it. That stuff is nice, but honestly I don't give two shits about it. I have had my time in the sun, and I'd rather give you and whomever else is the band their moments of glory. There is plenty of room for everyone to get praise. I just want to get back to having fun, and get away from all the BS. Like the stones said "It's only rock and roll".

I've been playing for 9 years and have never gotten gigs or really been in a band. My dream ain't to be playin' Wembly or The Palace or nothin', its to be playing in a few bars or clubs with some friends and having a great time and to record some kick ass music that means something to me.

Sure, I got a big head, we all do! But that isn't what playing with people is about. Its about sharing and learning and having a great fucking time and then walking away with something awesome you can always go back to- being a memory or a record or whatever. And dude, there is no need for moments of glory for everyone. A moment of glory is good music that everyone contributes to. If it is a kick ass, long as hell guitar solo by you or me who cares? As long as it sounds great and is serving the music, that is what matters! It makes everything a part of the glory. So yeah, man lets just have a good time.

And come to Michigan and join the band, WFA!

i wish i could see mike420 and zoso rose jam :(

Move to Michigan and join the band Walker. :)

@Zoso,

I hear ya on the Strat/Les Paul thing. That's why I play a Wolfgang, because EVH really did create the best of both worlds with that guitar. Ya it's not quite as good as the LP, for what the LP does, or as good as a Strat for what a strat does. But it does give you the best possible of both. The lows of the LP and the highs of the strat in one guitar.

Yeah, I'm actually looking forward to try your rig out (if that's cool!). I've loved all the Wolfgangs I've played. They are monsters! I'll have many more guitars in my life but that classic "Les Paul" with all the binding, a burst, flamed top, blah blah has been my holy grail. I've been going through some shit so I bit the bullet and got one last month. It has coil tapping so I actually get a lot of versatility out of it! This guitar has motivated me more than anything and I've been playing like never before.

Have you tried PRS? They are a cool mix of Fender and Gibson

Couldn't agree more, thats why I said what I said. Because I'm to the point where i'll enjoy a great solo by Alex just as much as one by me. Maybe even more. :)

Sorry to ramble on about my nonsense. The last couple of months in my other band have been pretty ruff, with a big blow happening last week. Our singer basically said she "wants to go on hiatus, because she wants to concentrate on her solo stuff." We will probably get together at some point in the future and play again, so I don't think we are "finished". But I was pretty taken back by her ego, go fucking solo??? Honestly who do you think you are??? She even said she "might" ask me to play on a couple of her solo songs in the studio. Now she's doing a solo album and "may" ask me to play on it... When I met her, the biggest thing she played was a bonfire party, but now shes a solo artists...lol.

But whatever, we have new things on the horizon anyways. :) The world still goes around...

I thought about ordering a custom Carvin instead of my Les Paul. It would have been awesome and an impeccable guitar. But I hate to say it, it wouldn't have said "Gibson" and it wouldn't be a Les Paul so I did what I had to do. Maybe next time!

And going solo? Pa-leaseeeeee.... make a record on your own at home then. It is insane when amateurs and hobbyists do shit like that.

Yes, that's exactly what I do.

I have a USB sound interface. I can connect the guitar/bass right into it and then with virtual amp simulation I can record and latter edit to taste (amp model, cut/past, effects,...). Still it sounds nothing like a real amp miced properly, with you can also do with the audio interface (mic input).

Basically what you need is a DAW software (I use Cubase but there are several others) + audio interface + lot's of time and patience!
