Chinese Democracy came out in 2008. Axl and others have said they recorded enough material for 3 albums. He sees it as a double. Definitely maybe. Didn't work on all this to keep it buried. Etc. Stinson and Ashba have said the wait won't be as long this time. But it's been 6 years with no album in sight. What is the real reason for this? My GNR investigates ...

We know that the label did not enjoy the Chinese Democracy Experience. We know album sales aren't anywhere close to what they used to be. We know Axl is difficult to work with. We know the quality/nature of the songs that were released in 2008. We know there is no democracy in China. We know the current band members have worked on new material, but have never gotten together as a group in the studio. And collectively have no idea what the fuck is going on.

The poll enables multiple selections, but really think about it and only vote for what you think the real reason(s) is/are for this delay.

Can MyGNR solve the case?

Axl still wants to wank around the studio, it is done - so many sources say that there is 2 albums worth of material ready to go. I think it is good enough, even more so, but it is what it is. Same old, same old.

Axl is selling property

that was 14 years ago...

well, I never made an album myself, but I wonder, if SO MANY songs are already done, what stops them to record it? Is that so hard a task??? I really think Axl has given up because no recordlabel is interested...or he is not interested....man o man...what drama....it goes on forever and ever, so many members saying that MAYBE there will be a new album...please stop that shit and only give us an update about the releasedate

I'm trying to illustrate Axl's indifference to new music. Unlike you, I have no up-to-date information on his property portfolio. Maybe you'd like to fill me in on his cable channel preferences too. And how's his cellar these days?

I don't think Axl doesn't give a fuck, imo he certainly wants to release the album but he doesn't feel any pressure or reason to release it before 2020 since he is... Axl. This mixed with his insecurity and the fact that most of the songs need to be properly mixed and mastered surely makes the process really slow, but I think we'll get CD II someday

It's easy to explain your failure if you don't even try. I don't think that means he doesn't care, though. He'd just rather get fat and do nothing than put more music out and have more worst years of his life when it becomes clear that no one gives a fuck about him anymore unless he's playing WTTJ for nostalgia.

Axl wanted C.D. to set the world alight. For one reason and another it didn't.

Reason: it's a completely mediocre album.

If it had been the best album ever put to disc it would still have died on its arse. With the fluke exception of AC/DC, the rock album is over and has been for quite some time. I imagine Axl found that a pretty rude awakening.

Seems like the majority of people so far think it's laziness/indifference, which is certainly possible considering Axl's recent actions. I am skeptical however, remember how ridiculously long it took for Chinese Democracy to come out ... and we know he gave a fuck back then. Of course, he was also trying to invent several new genres of music at once while crafting the perfect album, both of which we know are nearly impossible.

Based on some cryptic comments I've heard about CD, I think Axl wants a huge advance and big promotion. It's possible this caused part of the delay the first time as well, with the label unwilling to spend any more money on the album, so it remained in stasis until Best Buy and Dr. Pepper stepped in. Of course, that theory would require Axl to be willing to waste years of his life going in circles for a little extra money, but maybe that's something he enjoys, since it's happening all over again.

I also wonder if we're still just simply waiting for his muse to come back.

After the storm off and pouting job he pulled in 2008, he's crazier than even his biggest detractors could suggest if he thinks they will put serious money behind this.

Craziest thing? The easiest promotion is free. He calls 'Rolling Stone' and offers them an interview, he's on the cover. And everyone is talking about it.

I think...

  1. The unreleased CD-session songs just aren't that good. Not necessarily this... maybe Axl/the label was spooked by the reception to CD- but some of the songs might be strong enough...
  2. The album's done, but Axl is demanding an amount of money for the record and its promotion that the label is not willing to pay. Not buyng this- he has to know he's not getting a ton of $$$ at this point, and if full album was done i think there'd be more than fragments of demo-grade tunes out there
  3. Axl is still waiting for his muse to return, and won't act until it does. Hopefully not this either- because the most recent writing/recording activities that we know of is... what- 7-ish years ago?
  4. Axl is stalling because he's been seriously considering a reunion with the old band. Seems a long shot- but the Eagles Reunion demonstrated how much "irreparable" relationship damage can be smoothed over with a dump truck full of money.
  5. Axl can't decide whether to release Chinese Leftovers, or record brand new songs instead. Sorry, but if this guy had some new songs I can't see how somebody (in his inner circle or something) wouldn't have dropped a hint by now...
  6. Axl feels the songs are incomplete without Slash on guitar. Assuming this is a joke option- but it seems he feels the opposite, right?
  7. Axl has kind of given up, and just isn't interested in working on the project right now. Sadly I think this is the chief issue... people here have speculated that Axl was deflated and discouraged by the response to CD, & that just makes sense. It's also been said that though there might be "2 to 3 albums worth" of CD session songs- the 14 the label finally pried out of Axl's hands and released are probably the best (at least in commercial potential).
  8. There aren't that many completed songs. Just a bunch of sections and fragments, or songs with no vocals, and the label won't fund additional studio time to work on them. Yeah- this too... I think it goes with (my answers to) 2 & 7.
  9. The album is almost done. It just needs a few more finishing touches ...Can't be- I think if it was even kind of almost done the label would be fighting to just release the thing the way they did with CD.
