New Foo Fighters album - Sonic Highways

First single finally released. Album out next month.

What do people think? Only heard it once, but I'm rather underwhelmed, even though I've been saying since Wasting Light that that was bound to be the case. Sounds ok, but doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks like Bridges Burning or Arlandria or White Limo did off that last record. They have a lot to live up to. Fine for what it is, and maybe it will grow on me, but hopefully this is one of the weaker songs on what is only an 8 song record.

The studio version is ok, but this song is a lot better live.

lol, why is Rick Nielsen spontaneously appearing each time?

Did he write the song with them?

EDIT: Well I guess this makes sense for the Letterman performance at least.

This sounds better than "Something From Nothing".

I think he wrote the song with the band.

1.Something From Nothing ft. Rick Nielsen

2. The Feast and the Famine ft. Bad Brains

3. Congregation ft. Carrie Underwood

4. What Did I Do/God as My Witness

5. Outside

6. In the Clear

7. Subterranean ft. Ben Gibbard

8. I Am a River ft. Chuck D

I'll get around to the album but the documentary's really good, wrapping up an hour in each city that had a music scene and Foo Fighters going in to interview and work with people from there, a lot of focus on Cheap Trick, Steve Albini, and Buddy Guy (no Corgan or Phair). It's a veiled way to promote the album but I guess Dave Grohl had fun with Sound City that he wanted to incorporate that into the new album. They go to Dave's hometown next episode.

And here I am starting to like the track. lol. It's always like that with me

I'm like that with a lot of songs.

I didn't dislike this at first, but I wasn't wild about it. I like it a ton more now than I did to start with.

I'm pretty much in that boat as well now. I still don't think its a GREAT song, and I think its their worst album opener thus far, but thats only cause their other openers hold such a high standard.

Pretty much what I thought when I initially heard it: the last two minutes are really good. Its the first half that brings it down. Its slow, which is fine, but I don't think it really goes where it needs to, and I just don't really like the DIo rip off riff. That is kind of the only part I don't like of the song, but the song really isn't anything until it reaches the end. At least IMO. But I do like it more now than when I first heard it. I still hope its one of the weaker album tracks though.

I think this is a little better than Something From Nothing, but I hope the other songs are even better.

First few lines... "14th and U." That's DC! I know that area. First time I've heard a brand new song by a favorite artist of mine talking about a place which I know exactly where it is (wow, that was a terrible sentence, don't feel like restructuring it).

Also don't feel like consciously listening to the rest of the lyrics to figure out what the song's about, but the music is cool. Think I like SFN better as of now. Both are good.

I'm really not getting worried, but so far I haven't loved either song. Thats fine. I didn't like Rope that much when it came out, and I also never loved Let It Die as much as a lot of people. So the songs I hear first from the record aren't necessarily the best indicator to me, and they also end up being songs I grow to like more. I will say I still think Something From Nothing, while good, would end up by default being their worst opener, but again thats only because they've set a very high standard for those.

Each song is touching on different genres and places, so its very possible those other genres won't be for me, but I'll wait until the entire record is out to firmly decide. As of now, Something For Nothing is a solid 7 out of 10 for me. Same as when I first heard it, I think the first half isn't really great, saved by a pretty tremendous second half. Feast And The Famine sounded like a 6 on first listen but thats a snap judgement. It'll be interesting to hear the other six. They haven't made an album I truly don't like yet (to me, their debut has always been the weakest and even its pretty damn good) so if this ends up being the first dud for me I'd say they had a better track record than most. Wasting Light was always gonna be near impossible to follow.

I am remaining optimistic though, and I'd still see them live.
