American Culture

A global phenomenon.

From Star Bucks to MacDonalds to Toys R Us to The Simpsons.

The foods we eat, the Coca-Cola we drink and the stuff we wear (in the west, we I mean the Adidas/Nike reppers).

It is everywhere, especially here, where I'm posting from.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see my culture - Red telephone boxes, Union Jacks, and stuff like that, but the NFL coming to London...

Feels almost like a step too far.

I love the concept, but c'mon!

I think America has a rich culture and an interesting history, but it feels like it's taking over the world. Globalisation and all that.

What do you think of the American culture?

I like it.

I wear American style clothes (jeans, trainers, tshirt) listen to Guns N' Roses, grew up with The Simpsons and Nickelodeon.

Adidas is German, no?

Really? I didn't know that.

That's cool, I'm going to rep my Adidas like I rep my vintage Framus Hollywood (German Les Paul shaped guitar from the 60s) with it's customised Schaller bridge (high end German bridge) - The guy who put that dream into fruition chose it over TonePros becaue they were a German compnay and the guitar was German... I do like Mercedes.

But last week I had a

to try it at this German restaurant I was eating at.

Just no.

Ewl.

Was nasty.

I wanted a coke.

It tasted healthier for me, I'll give it that, but it was not what I wanted.

I know I might be tired of all this American stuff everywhere and everything, but... Give me a

anyday.

The fuckin' artists, the minds, the poets, great writers to come out of America...and all you can think of in a cultural discussion about America is Coca Cola, Starbucks and a pair of German trainers

There ain't no fuckin' culture in this world no more.

On a grand scale Hemingway, Dylan, Scorsese etc are barely known, especially outside the english speaking world. Coca Cola, Nike, McDonalds, Apple are ubiquitous and have had a much much MUCH greater impact on the world than any writer or artist can ever dream of.

Right, which says something about the state of contemporary culture, hence my closing statement. But there's a lot more to America culture than what has occured in the last century.

Also, that statement is kinda bullshit, Nike has had more effect on American culture than someone like Jack Kerouac? Bullshit. And he's the least of a bunch of possible responses.

Yes, I recognise two strands of American culture, the naff (Macdonalds, cola, starbucks and a bunch of electrical gadgets) which I basically completely disregard. And then there is the genius (this is the same for all cultures I suppose, which is why Jade Goody and Shakespeare came from the same country!). The genius by the way deserve a topic in itself but I think you see it in the folk song traditions very much. America is a melting point so you had the African rhythms, you had the European folk influence, you had western instrumentation (e.g. the guitar), you had the European tradition of Classical Music. It was a pot pourri of styles which resulted in country western, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues/rock n' roll.

Just because she is dead! Because she died it does not mean she ceased to represent everything that is wrong about modern Britain's naff chav culture.

I think you'll find Johnathan is taking the mickey.

What about Poe, Whitman, Jack London, Tennessee Williams, Steinbeck, F Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain. Or outside of writers people like Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Edison...you wanna tell me a fuckin' burger joint is more influential than him?!?

As a slight tangent, a lot of what goes for English slang on this website actually exists in American culture. A great many of the turns of phrase and lingo, they're all over old American books, movies etc etc It's just after the 70s everyone in America tried to talk like they were black and all that old shit got washed away apparently.

I suppose it comes down to what we mean by culture. If it’s the creative collective, the current setters, the thinking and expression avant-garde than you are correct.

But if by culture we mean the collective consciousness of the world, the way humanity as a block views itself and the world, what generates out values and our wants (beyond needs) than I think I am.

I'm watching an NFL game on TV and it's being played in London. Stop stealing my culture.

And they're going to sing God Save the Queen? Fuck off. Star Spangled is bad enough.

Get fucked Mags! Think of poor cunts like me who want to watch it at a reasonable time!
