Is Advil a legitimate pain reliever?

Ibuprofen (Advil) is a good pain reliever. It won't get you "high" but it does work to reduce pain. I've been using it for years for headaches, fevers, muscle and back aches, etc. Works fine... Personally, it works better than Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Aspirin.

Advil works a little. But against backache not so much. It only makes it hurt a little less.

In my experience, besides the heavy painkillers, nothing really works against backache.

Personally I rather use Aleve, than Advil. Aleve has naproxen in it, which is easier on the stomach and works better against backache.

Also in my case, paracetamol works better against pain, than the ones mentioned above and is a lot more safe for the stomach.

I knew an ex pro racquetball player who sprained his ankle in a match, and told me he grinds up ibuprofen and mixes it with water into a paste and uses it topically. Never tried it but he seemed pretty sure of it.

And acetaminophen is freaking poison.

I use prescription strength 800mg ibuprofen. Works wonders.

I has a horrible sprained once and the fucking asshole doctor tried to offer me those instead of actual painkillers.

That's ok, I once had a doctor "prescribe" me four over the counter 200mg ibuprofen.

That's what I never understood about being prescribed 800's. Oh, you mean something that is equalled by 4 of the pills I already have? Yes, better get prescribed those.

What I find interesting with painkillers is the size of the placebo component. When you take a painkiller you EXPECT to experience a relieve of pain, and this expectation alone both results in the release of endorphins in your body (the body's natural painkiller) as well as change your perception of the pain so as it doesn't feel as bad anymore. A study looked at the effect of placebo when used on people who had gone through mouth surgery, and by giving patients saline water which they said were a strong painkiller, the effect on the patients was similar to administring 6-8 mg of morphine. In addition to this placebo effect, all painkillers that are being sold of course also contain chemicals that through a biochemical mechanism reduce the pain.

So placebo is great. What is not so great is nocebo, which is the opposite: a substance thatb is basically inert, but, because you expect it to be dangerous to you, actually causes harm through that expectation alone. So if you think something is bad for you, you might through sheer power of the will make an inert substance bad for you.

Both placebo and nocebo are brilliant phenomenons to study to undersstand how the mind may influence the physiology of humans, and ties in with the values of optimism/pessimism and generally having a positive outlook.
