MyGNR International Guitarist's Tone Shootout Super Championship Grand Prix Competition of 2014 Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Had a bit of fun with the title, anyway....

So a few of us talked a little bit about this in The Gear Thread, and there seemed to be some interest. I have some ideas, but I think the shootout would work better if we had a bit of collaboration on how it's going to run, so this thread will be for discussion and organizing, and the actual shootout will be a different thread.

I think it should be two parts:

1). A rig run down video (or audio with picture(s)), explaining the set up with some detail.

2). A demo for the actual shootout (again, video or audio). Maybe 3-4 minutes long, demoing cleans, effects, gain, etc.?

I'm thinking there should be independent judges (IE, not participating).... but I think the judges should be musicians too? I'll send some PM's out to those who don't post in here that often, to see if they'd like to participate or judge.

As far as judging goes, that's still unclear, I'm thinking maybe a rubric with categories: Clean Tone, Crunch Tone, Hi-Gain Tone, Clarity, Versatility, and then this following category I'm not sure on, but maybe a "Wild Card Factor" for general appeal of the amp (some amps have terrible cleans, but amazing hi-gain, so this would sort of balance that out, as comparing a Fender Bassman's cleans to a JCM800's isn't fair).

Confirmed participants:

ZoSo

Omar (unless I have to judge)

Mike

AxlIsOld

TJ

Chewy

slash23579

Snake Pit?

Slashman?

Judges:
Towelie

Rovim

uncivil war

To make this work, I think we need a minimum of 4 or so participants, and 3 judges. So let me know here, or PM me, if you're in; I'll keep an up to date list of participants here.

Winner gets to be a mod for a day? :P

A few final thoughts: make sure you can get a decent quality sound clip, performance/style/playing ability will not be judged, and I think it would be best if everyone uses SoundCloud to host audio, and YouTube to host video.

I'll judge. Am a guitarist myself, but can't be arsed to partake.

Excellent!

This sounds pretty cool, is this for just amp tones or GNR tones?.

Well it's for your whole rig; the cumulative tone of your guitar, amp, speakers, pedals, etc., it's whatever your rig set up is.

I've updated the first post to reflect current sign ups; I'll put some more formal work into this later today.

I'l try it as soon as I can get back home in december. I don't have an actual amp here, just a vox amphone for practice.

in december.

:max:

Actually this probably won't happen until December anyway. It's November 10th right now... I'd like to give everyone at least two weeks to do the recording, and there's still more work that needs to be put into this to make it happen - so early/mid December is a realistic time for judging to start/submissions to be due.

Well I did my video and I recorded 2 songs for the "shoot out." I did one complete song (2 guitar tracks, vocals, and harmonica track). The other song I did is an "eruption' style just plain shredding track, just me tearing it up, one track only no trickery. I have to do some editing and what not, but I should have them uploaded in a couple of weeks. I just wanted to get my actual video and music tracks done asap. That way I can leave my cab over my drummers house, I hate lugging that thing up and down stairs....

Wow that was fast, cool. Yeah I'm still sort of in the planning/organizing phase for this, want to try to get a few more participants and judges, and lay out some more finite competition rules..... I originally was not going to have guitars be accompanied by anything, because we are strictly judging guitar tone here. I would definitely say, 2 guitar tracks is a no-no (on one recording), that almost always affects the way we perceive tone. Unless one is a lead track for soloing, and one is a rhythm track. I wanted to try to make it as fair as possible for people recording with anywhere from professional to amateur set ups, and in between.

I guess one way to do it would be to say: get the best tone out of what you have, using any means possible. But that opens it up to a lot of post-processing effects, which I originally did not intend on having too much of. This is why I made a planning thread first, so that we could all sort of set up the rules and what we think the fairest way to do it would be. :P

Ya the 2 guitar tracks are 1 rhythm and 1 lead. I've just always prefered my tone when there is a band behind me, that's why I did it this way. But I also wanted one with just 1 track, for this exact reason. Honestly I didn't spend a ton of time on this, couple of hours max. I just wanted to get it done before I move my amp again. But like I said, I did it quickly and am not using any after effects, what you hear is me and my amp really.

Ya its a fucking bitch..... Stacks are not really the best amps for giging. I love the tone, but I also like having a functioning back, good God....

That's the thing, often a guitar player sounds better with a band behind him/her. For whatever reason, it changes the way we hear the sound. It you listen to Slash's tracks solo'd from AFD (they're on YouTube), they sound different than they do in the context of the song. So you raise a good point, which tone is the true tone? The standalone tone, or the tone in context? Both are pretty important. The best thing would be to do what you did, one of each, but I don't think everyone (including myself) has the means and time to do both at this moment. Though, I still haven't decided if I'm judging yet, gotta get working on some PM's.

Well boss (Omar),

My vote is for 2 recordings, (1 with a rhythm and lead track) and another one with just 1 track. That way I'm done and don't have to do anymore. :P

Besides I'm not against having a backing rhythm track. But thats just my vote. :)

Yeah you won't have to do any more, you may have to cut some out, but it's up to consensus, I'm not trying to call the shots on this, I want to know what everyone thinks would be the best way to do it.

Now, I haven't really gotten much response other than people saying they're interested in doing it, so if it continues like that for another week or so, I may just draft up my own list of rules/regulations, and have it be approved here.

I'm going to try and do mine over thanksgiving. Not a lot of people look on Niceboys either so we should send out a few PMs or have Forsaken or ER make an announcement

I was going to do a bunch of PM's sometime this weekend, need to make a short list first of who I know plays guitar. I pretty much know who does out of the active posters. As you said, a few don't check Nice Boys.

I vote for Len as a judge and Snakepit as a contestant.

The only thing about Len judging, is that I would want someone who is fluent in English so that participants can understand the judge's verdicts. (joking of course, he is welcome to if he wants, though he was not on my PM list).
