Some CD love emerging...!?

Recommended Posts

You can see how much better the comments sections for GNR related articles are when South Americans have little to no access to them.

Good article. My top 3 would be something like: Better (from some leaked version, not the album version), Madagascar (from Rio 2001), TWAT (some leaked version too). All the other songs/versions are mediocre/bad/unlistenable. Poor lyrics and production for a 10+ million/years album is just unacceptable.

CD suffered from the monumental hype and expectations attached to it. It could never live up to it, and yeah, given how long it took,it should have been better. It's far from a perfect GNR album, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. I was underwhelmed at first, but over the years, it has really grown on me.

This is not true though. Just because you spend a lot of time making an album doesn't make it better. In that case lots more artists would do that. In fact, it probably makes it worse (overproduction). The album was really done in 99 (?), anything after that was just fine tuning and overproduction. Same with money, it doesn't necessarily make it a better album. After a certain point money can't improve lyrics or a tone or whatever. Basically, people made an error in assuming the vast amount of money and time spent on the album would make it the best ever album made or whatever. It is understandable that they were thinking so though. The hype created unrealistic expectations.

Personally, I didn't like it all in the beginning too. Same as with you it has grown on me and I really like it now.

Another point to remember is that that this album should really be viewed as a debut album. This was the first album this group of people made together. And even this new group had line-up changes made to it. It's just the GN'R name that's confusing people. People were expecting a GN'R sounding album, but how could it ever be when only two people were left from the UYI line-up? I'm sure had it sounded more classic GN'R people would probably criticise them for sounding to similar to the original members :P

There's a whole world outside this bitter forum full of people who appreciate and like Chinese Democracy without effort.

Nice article. A follow-up to this record would for sure make people want to listen to it more :)

There's a whole lot of people right here inside this forum that appreciate the album as well. There's no need to insult the forum because a lot of people don't have the same opinion as you.

Insults. Looks like you don't patrol the threads enough when it comes to insults. Band member insulting is currency in this bitter forum. Axl Rose himself was insulted in this place.

Pot calling the kettle black is also natural in here.

The biggest disappointment with CD lies squarely with Axl himself - the vocals are, in general, not up to much. Axl sounds better on Baz's album. This is criminal.

For all the talk of Axl's lyrical prowess there is little on CD to back this up. This I Love is an embarrassment.

Finally. The production, something Axl is known for obsessing about - is just terrible. It kills songs like Prostitute. That's just one example.

Then, on top of all of that - you have some terrible guitar work (elephant noises), awful drumming. forgettable bass lines and random noise all over the tracks (Pittman)

It all adds up to a complete mess of an album.

Ever since its inception, Chinese Democracy was destined to become a musical collage of Axl's insecurities. Each song feels like it's been tampered with for years on Pro Tools. The final product sounds less organic than modern hip-hop (which is really saying something.)

i can really see the good in CD. I love the energy and rawness in songs like Shackler's better, IRS and Chinese Democracy. Also the lyrics are really sharp in some songs like Sorry those lyrics are deep man! Then take There Was A Time just an amazing piece of music itself. Then we have This I love and Street of Dreams the piano ballad kinda songs we all want Axl to do a little more, i personally love that. Ofcourse there are awful songs like Rhiad and Scraped is not that impressive either, still there are plenty of songs on it to make it a very enjoyable album. I wouldn't even wanna see a GN'R show without songs like Better no more.

You make some fair points, and it's a fair argument that time spent on a project doesn't necessarily make for a better finished product. But I think that's what most people's perception of what CD would be. They were expecting a much more polished album, and I think that hurt it's initial reception.

People who are enthusiastic about CD remind me of those that are happy to visit the dentist.

People with good teeth remind you of CD lovers ?? Lol jk... Seems these articles pop up time to time.. People who take the time to listen to it Afew times usually like Afew of the songs on it. I always think of that one Axl quote that was something like "there's atleast somthing you'll

like" or some shit like that.. Honestly Chinese as a whole is a lot to take in and the songs are definitely not for everyone. I feel like if your a fan of Axls style on the illusions you will like quite a bit of what he's going for. If you are an appetite dude (or girl) your not gona give two shits about the album 3 songs in. Chinese has it's moments of sleaze but it's like old bitter rich man still fuking model bitches sleaze and not 20 year old heroin junky living the streets fuking night crawlers sleaze. Anyways I dig most of the tunes on it.
