Ace Nova
So.....who here actually goes out shopping on 'Black Friday'?
Powerage5
I pick up some Record Store Day stuff if there's anything good...and that's about it.
DirtyDeeds
Transferring my post on this from the Thanksgiving thread to this one...I wish we could, as a country, agree to ban the buzzword "doorbuster." If I hear one more fucking ad about their stupid "doorbusters," I'll.... I'll.... well I'll probably do nothing, but I won't like it! I really just hate how they promote the whole mob mentality by calling it that.
Ace Nova
My ex'es would stay up until 4 AM back in the day to go out shopping....that was before they started on Thanksgiving evening. I'm glad I'm single now because if my significant other would want to go shopping after Thanksgiving dinner, we wouldn't make it too far. What's up with Walmart (and their like) starting Black Friday at 6 PM on Thanksgiving?I'm all about capitalism, etc....but now....they're starting to cut into family time, etc.....crossed the line, imo. DirtyDeeds
You don't eliminate one holiday to feed the frenzy of another. And that's coming from someone who hates Thanksgiving.
Ace Nova
You don't eliminate one holiday to feed the frenzy of another. And that's coming from someone who hates Thanksgiving. Exactly. And although most holidays are 'commercialized' nowadays....for the vast majority of people, it's still very valuable time they get to spend with their families. And that's the real purpose of it all. When Walmart (etc.) starts their money hungry grab in the middle of it....that's going too far. Those knuckleheads have been advertising a 50 inch HD flat screen TV for $212 all week....GUARANTEED by Christmas, as long as you showed up between 6 and 7 pm on Thanksgiving.Pathetic.Sam Walton would be turning in his grave. DirtyDeeds
I'm just disappointed in people that their consumerism is so bad that they actually buy into doing Black Friday during Thanksgiving dinner. If nobody went shopping, stores wouldn't open then. I'm disappointed that so many people feed the monster.Maybe we should make a list of well-known stores that are closed on Thanksgiving, so that we can consider giving them more of our business, and giving the stores that are open less business.Costco is closed on Thanksgiving. Great place to shop.

When all of a sudden, they see that they can get their 'dream tv' for what they paid for their 19 inch tube years ago....they (almost) don't have a choice. AxlisOld
I wonder how much of a beast the Friday shopping on Thursday thing will go?We've already ruined Thanksgiving, how far into it will it push? Thanksgiving at 4am? Completely ruin retail workers' Thanksgivings?

When you posted the 50 incher for $212, I almost said, "Fuck it, I'm putting my pants on and going out there!" But then I told myself I'll stick to my principles. Then I realized you said it was going on from 6:00 - 7:00 and I missed the boat anyway and I was relieved. It is hard

Aren't the people that "could only dream of getting a 50 inch HD TV someday" probably the same people that are stuck working Thanksgiving dinner hours anyway? It seems to me like this whole thing is kind of classist, probably. I mean, I respect people who work in retail, but those generally speaking are not the most desirable jobs. It seems like Thanksgiving will just be people who work crap jobs serving those with better jobs who have that day off and have money to burn. Thanksgiving should be fairly egalitarian. Regardless of your social standing, just about everyone other than some cops, EMTs, doctors, etc. should have the right to gather with the whole famn damily and eat the same meal everyone else is eating across the country: turkey and stuffing/dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and rolls, with pumpkin, apple, or pecan pie for dessert. But to me it seems like it's going to split down the class lines, more or less.
Bono
The whole Black Friday epidemic is disgusting and humanity should be ashamed of themselves. Morons acting like assholes just to save a few dollars. It's pure idiocy and people who participate in the frenzy aspect of it by lining up and stampeding stores are douchebags in my opinion. People will spend hours upon hours waiting in line for this shit but people won't spend 5 minutes donating blood or helping in a soup kitchen for an hour or whatever. Black Friday madness is a black mark on humanity in my opinion.

Snake-Pit
hooray for tolerance! every Friday's Black Friday.I jest. I don't know specifics of it, Washington is a "work or go fuck yourself" state.

But to me it seems like it's going to split down the class lines, more or less. Not necessarily. My folks are upper middle class, etc.....and they have a few 42 inch TV's....but they don't own a 50 inch. A 50 inch is almost considered a 'big screen' TV. I just bought a 60 inch a few months ago and that's the largest TV I've ever owned....and as you know, I've done well in the past. The thing is with TV's, you get what you can afford (at the time) and they last a while.....so until (most people) have a reason to get a bigger one, most people don't. DirtyDeeds
That's awesome AxlIsOld. I'm in favor of those laws. If a lot of states make it so you can't buy booze on Sunday, or at least before noon, then they can also make it so that you don't have to work WAL*MART on Thanksgiving. As an aside, I've experienced some irony regarding those blue laws that restrict alcohol purchases on Sunday. One time I was told I couldn't purchase some wine because it was within the blue law hours. Thing was, I was working for a church and I was purchasing the wine for communion Edited November 28, 2014 by DirtyDeeds

DirtyDeeds
I just read on my Facebook that an acquaintance of mine was stuck working a 4:00 - 11:00 shift on Thanksgiving. A customer asked him where a certain TV he wanted was, and this acquaintance of mine told him they were sold out of that TV. The customer then spat directly onto his face. The ugliest possible side of people seems to come out when you tell them they can save a hundred bucks.
dalsh327
There's something about getting a discount that people love, but if you're putting it on a store card, it kind of defeats the purpose.
AxlisOld
My poor wife is working tonight, the store closed almost an hour ago and I went to give her a ride. I'm sitting in the parking lot, and people are flying into the parking lot and speed walking up to the locked door with the hours on it. They read the sign several times, then stare into the window for goings on, then go back to their car and haul ass out of the parking lot. There have been at least 20 cars. What the fuck is wrong with these people? Go to bed!
